Scuba Steve Posted March 18, 2020 Posted March 18, 2020 Hey everybody. Has anyone been able to find a way to do this? I do prefer to lock my two rods to the inside of my car. Any diy or pvc ideas floating around out there? Not looking to do a big pvc rod tube on the roof either. Thanks. Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted March 18, 2020 Super User Posted March 18, 2020 why does it have to be locked while inside the car itself? Just lock the doors of the car and be done with it.... 2 Quote

Super User flyfisher Posted March 18, 2020 Super User Posted March 18, 2020 I read your question and asked a further clarifying questions as to the purpose as that can change the recommendations presented. It also might help to say what type of vehicle, how long the rods are etc.... Sorry to get you all up in your feelings over a response...good luck in your search for a product to solve a problem you won't define and get defensive when asked for more details. 9 1 Quote
Super User Sam Posted March 18, 2020 Super User Posted March 18, 2020 I keep the rods in the vehicle to and from the ramp. I tried the suction cup holders that go onto the passenger side windows and they did not do well. So I put them in the back of the SUV and then have them on top of and next to the passenger seat. Or, they can go on an angle and point towards the rear driver's seat window. I never leave rods in an unattended vehicle other than in a locked vehicle during weigh-ins. Quote

Your question did not seek clarification, nor does vehicle type or rod length matter. My rods fit in my car. That info was clearly provided. So with that, topic is still open. Thanks in advance. 4 minutes ago, Sam said: I keep the rods in the vehicle to and from the ramp. I tried the suction cup holders that go onto the passenger side windows and they did not do well. Super User flyfisher Posted March 18, 2020 Super User Posted March 18, 2020 For being so knowledgable about what does or doesn't matter you wouldn't think you would need to ask the question. I know you don't want a PVC rod tube on top of the car but yakima makes a rod locker now that is lockable, i think it is called the topwater. Depending on your vehicle that you won't share, this may fit on the inside of the vehicle as well and provide locked security. 1 Quote

No, I didn't need to ask the question, but figured I would at least ask before I go to home depot and buy supplies. Wanted to see if there's anything I can do different. Your critique about what needs to be posted is comical coming from a troll who got called out and then decided to post something constructive. That part, is at least appreciated. Thank you. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted March 18, 2020 Super User Posted March 18, 2020 I guess something like a bicycle lock would work, but it would have to pass through something in the reel and the rod eyes, without incurring damage to either. Anything small enough to deter a small set up bold cutters is probably too large for that. I feel like anyone that can get into a locked vehicle is more apt to take the stereo, ransack the storage compartments, or steal the entire car, than mess with fishing rods. Quote

I wouldn’t but it past anyone to steal the fishing rods if breaking into the car. $3.00 in loose change in console and grab the rods will most likely happen. They’ll take them to the river and sell them for peanuts to the lowlife that hang down there. Quote
Super User islandbass Posted March 19, 2020 Super User Posted March 19, 2020 I’m having some difficulty visualizing what you’re trying to do. I imagine the top of the car inside would be the best bet. Consider yourself fortunate you don’t live where I do. Secured or not in a pvc tube or not, that’s simply inviting a would be thief to bust your window and even if they don’t take anything, you’re out a window, lol. Quote

Yeah I messed with the one I have for about 15 minutes today lol. Not getting through those legend tournament guides. If someone takes my car, well then it's just not my day anyway. I'm trying to take one extra step as a deterrent on the typical petty thief scumbag, or bored saturday night teenagers. 17 minutes ago, Spankey said: I wouldn’t but it past anyone to steal the fishing rods if breaking into the car. $3.00 in loose change in console and grab the rods will most likely happen. Anybody that breaks into my car probably just wants to watch the world burn anyway and will take whatever they can. I usually like to keep 2 or 3 combos on me at all times and that breaks the $1,000 mark. That's before the value of any other equipment. 2 minutes ago, islandbass said: I’m having some difficulty visualizing what you’re trying to do. Well yeah the window is out of my control regardless. Quote
Super User jimmyjoe Posted March 19, 2020 Super User Posted March 19, 2020 This is the reason that I have 2-piece rods, and keep them locked in the trunk. I had thought about something like the big Plano tubes, but decided against it. Such things scream, "Hey! Look at me! I've got something inside that my owner doesn't want you to see! It's valuable!" The only other answer I saw was from a man with an older utility van. He could shove rods clear up under the front seat from the back doors, using a simple piece of cardboard from a refrigerator box to hide them. Good luck. jj 1 Quote
papajoe222 Posted March 19, 2020 Posted March 19, 2020 I have a system, not lockable, that holds my rods fairly close to the interior roof and out of sight of passersby. Using one of those, You could fabricate something with one piece of PVC, split down the middle, in front of your reels and another behind, drill holes in the ends and pass a cable lock, like the ones used for handguns, through the holes. A bike cable lock could work. You'd have the benefit of having them out of sight and locked together. Hope you get the Idea I'm attempting to convey. https://www.basspro.com/shop/en/rod-saver-vehicle-rod-carrier Quote

Shame we don’t know each other or live close because I have some various diameter coated thinner wire ropes that you crimp heavy duty furrels and eyes on and can make a custom cable lock with. It can’t be cut with a scissors or wire dike. But here’s my thought, if you try to lock or secure the reels I can see making that happening. But the reels are secured to the rod by only a cheap seat. And if you try to utilize the rod eyes as soon as a thief gets frustrated he’ll yank and pull the combos and surely destroy them. I think I’d go the route of having two piece set ups and when the car is parked have them in the floor and cover them with a black piece of carpet so that they don’t draw attention. You can get creative as to how you cut it and someone would never be able to tell. Don’t trust anybody. Especially these day. It would be one thing if a guy stole your $225 combo and went fishing with it, that’s not the case. He’ll steal your $225 combo and sell it for $10 or $15 dollars. That’s the kicker. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted March 19, 2020 Super User Posted March 19, 2020 My old car had a pass through from the trunk. The handle sides were in the trunk. You could not tell the value by looking at the tips. That car did get broken into, once, but I had left a laptop bag on the seat. Nothing was taken, so I assume the alarm did it's job. I'd go a slightly different route - check with my insurance broker to see what can be covered before something happens, and don't make it obvious that anything of value is in the car. 1 Quote
haggard Posted March 19, 2020 Posted March 19, 2020 If you have the room (SUV etc) mounting them to the inside of the roof keeps them mostly out of sight which is a good deterrent. 1 Quote

My main concern would be that whoever breaks in my car isn’t going to pay strict attention to the fragile rod tips projecting into the front seat area and would end up breaking them trying to steal the emergency junk food money out of the center console. Super User soflabasser Posted March 20, 2020 Super User Posted March 20, 2020 You can put 2 piece rods in the trunk of your car. 1 Quote

If I lived in an area where folks broke into vehicles often, I would consider 2 pc rods also. Newer 2 pc rods seem to be made much better and, from what I understand feel as good as 1 pc rods. 1 Quote

garroyo130 Posted March 20, 2020 Posted March 20, 2020 Carry the reels in a backpack and bike chain the rods to the child safety seat hook (wherever it is on your car). I'd also suggest putting a boot on the car so they dont just tow the entire car to get to the rods. ... and please stop fishing the Detroit ghettos Quote
Scuba Steve Posted March 20, 2020 Author Posted March 20, 2020 Just going with my original idea. Sincere thanks to those who tried. Question was apparently too difficult. We can shut this down. Quote
