I have had a Nikon Coolpix for more than 6 years and have taken it snorkeling and dropped it on rocks while hiking. It might cost a little more but it takes good pictures and the ruggedness has been worth every penny for me.

iPhone or smart phones have a good camera.

Nope, put one of their pics on a computer screen FULL SIZE and all you get is grain. I have 2 25Mp phones my GF has an apple and all of their pics FULL SIZE look like crap. Try it.

That's why I like my Galaxy - even my 'ancient' S-4 has a good camera. Un-retouched example below.

Okay, let me throw something out here for anyone interested. The wife and I have a tracfone. I used to have an iphone and when I retired I decided to go back to some semblance of normalcy and get out of social media and phones. Anyway, the LG tracfone smartphone  costs about $29. It has an 8mp camera and does decent pictures and video with a camera on both sides unlike a standard camera. You don't have to purchase the phone minutes. You can use it as a wireless device and a camera. Cheapest camera that's not a toy that I can think of. I've not used it on the boat but I have used it to record bait making vids for youtube. Sound is okay but not super. Chances you might not need good vocal sound on an boat anyway. Not waterproof but it's so inexpensive...

Seach 'tracfone smartphone' on Amazon to see some of them.

We traveled around the world using both digital highend camera's and iPhone 18 mp for pictures and both produced good quality trip photos. Unless you are making 8 X 10 or larger cropped portrait quality photos the smart phone detais are good enough. Carring a smart phone is a good idea for anglers for emergency and decent photos, you can't take pictures of yourself easily using a high end camera.

Well, the wife got a tracfone. Junk. Won't hold a charge.

I think I'll get a Lumix. Maybe. Just maybe. It's supposed to be waterproof to something like 24 feet. Maybe I'll have better luck. This whole subject is starting to be irritating.  12 y.o. kids can do everything lickety-split, and I can't even turn the thing on.

I hate getting old, but I guess it's better than the alternative.      jj

I'm chiming in a little late, but didn't want to repeat under a new topic.  My buddy is letting me borrow his GoPro as I've always wanted to record a fishing trip.  I'm headed to a farm pond where I should get some good footage pretty quick and curious if anyone has an opinion on head mount vs chest mount when bank fishing?

I feel like the chest would be more stable, but I fear that I would end up with an hour's worth of video of my hands.

The head mount probably offers a better view, but I'm constantly looking around and moving my head, and don't want to get sick when watching the footage I capture.

I've watched YouTube examples of both, but curious of the opinions of anyone who records regularly?

GoPros were designed for closeup shots. Like where the camera is pointed to something very close like a selfie. Pointing it off into the distance makes bad videos. Put it on a tripod and point it at yourself if you are fishing from the bank.

I've been using the camera on a smartphone for years.  If anything I'll need to shrink the pic down.  I don't think I have ever needed to enlarged one.

I video my fishing with assorted GoPros but it's all while in a canoe or boat.

I do not like or use either the chest or head mounted view. I also video from other varoius locals including my truck.  Again the camera is mounted not worn.  IMO, having the camera set some distance away tells more of the story.  Here's some of it

You may need to just shoot some video and see how it comes out.  Since I started, the cameras are always running and I have captured some fantastic life long memories.

Good Luck

I have a Fujinon that is water proof down to 65 feet, and shock proof to 6 ft.  It cost around $250 a couple years ago.  It takes great pictures above and underwater.

Problem is, it is very difficult to take selfies with.  If any one has seen some of my pictures taken while in my kayak you can see the big disadvantage of a camera compared to a phone.  A phone is easy to take selfies with and you can send the pictures to friends without having to down load on to a computer.  Only reason I don't use a phone for fish pictures is, I don't own one that is water proof.  My camera has been dunked in the water more than once, and works fine.  Camera durability is great, but one more poor picture of a trophy bass, and I may start using a phone.
