Super User N Florida Mike Posted March 18, 2020 Super User Posted March 18, 2020 I do sales with commissions only pay. March and April are our biggest months. ( Lawn care -pest control)We were getting very busy until this CV scare. I have stayed moderately busy the last few days But today... nothing. I do have a few call backs to make. It stinks because I was hoping for the extra $ this season brings. Not sure how this will turn out, but I know someone that does. Is anyone else experiencing this? I think I’m going to load up my fishing stuff and go down toward the shop and find a pond to fish...How bout y’all? Please don’t let this turn political and get banned. 1 Quote
Super User Bird Posted March 18, 2020 Super User Posted March 18, 2020 Here in VA or at least the area I live in, everyone is busy. Very minor shut downs, mainly schools. All state parks and fisheries confirmed by phone yesterday, operating as usual. All local businesses still up and running. Yes, everyone is washing their hands. I'm very optimistic that the economy will be trending upward by early summer in every region. Hang in there. 3 Quote
DanielG Posted March 18, 2020 Posted March 18, 2020 Maine here. Only 32 cases and no deaths. All the neighbors are home. My daughter and her son are working from home. Thankfully they are highly educated professionals and work for a company that planned to work from home. Mostly conferencing and computer stuff. But, with only a few cases I look out the window and the young people who would be at work, their cars are in the driveway. Schools closed too. Maine has the (highest?) elderly population in the country. But we're used to being hermits. Ayuh.... It's like recessions. We usually don't now what all the fuss is about. Mainers often live like we're in recession all the time. Stay well everyone. And being paranoid and over doing it is probably the right thing now. Quote
Super User N Florida Mike Posted March 18, 2020 Author Super User Posted March 18, 2020 Got 2 quotes lined up ?and one guy bit- but won’t get him to the boat until April.? 1 Quote
Global Moderator 12poundbass Posted March 18, 2020 Global Moderator Posted March 18, 2020 Spring is here, the ground has thawed, and we are swamped! By the time I’m done Friday I’ll have around 55 hours. Our CEO sent our an email stating, interviews for new hires will be postponed or if possible done via Skype, training classes over 10 people are postponed, corporate people that can work from home will do so, and for those of us out in the field it’s business as usual (thankfully). We haven’t seen a down turn in incoming work as of now. 2 Quote
Super User N Florida Mike Posted March 18, 2020 Author Super User Posted March 18, 2020 Had 1 little sale come in today and thankful for it. Nobody home at the other 2. Did all I could and went fishing for a little while , at this big pond . A 14 pounder was caught in it years ago . No runs , hits, or errors! At least it was a beautiful day! Thinking about applying for a part time job at Academy Sports. Do any of y’all work there? The employees I’ve met there seem to love it. Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted March 20, 2020 Super User Posted March 20, 2020 I’m considered essential personnel so I have to go in. Of course the place is a ghost town since everyone else is staying home. Quote
Global Moderator TnRiver46 Posted March 20, 2020 Global Moderator Posted March 20, 2020 Our work is slow with a few exceptions, I lined up another couple of new opportunities. We shall see Quote
Super User Darren. Posted March 20, 2020 Super User Posted March 20, 2020 Lost my job, as well. Web sites I ran for 17+ years...owner retired, shut them down at end of Feb. Virus a concern; that and subscription issues weighed in shutdown. Sucks. 50 years old, no response from any application. Can't get unemployment because I was 1099/self-employed. Wife a nurse, but we still have 4 boys, a lot of expenses, etc. She can't carry us alone. Tough times. We'll make it through. Hopefully politicians get heads out of their ... nether regions and come up with a relief that helps all of us. 1 5 Quote

Super User A-Jay Posted March 20, 2020 Super User Posted March 20, 2020 @Darren. ~ Sorry to hear that my friend. Hope things start going your way sooner rather than later. A-Jay 1 Quote
Super User N Florida Mike Posted March 21, 2020 Author Super User Posted March 21, 2020 Sorry to hear that @Darren. Your going on my prayer list. A little off topic, but I was on I-95 today for around 35 miles going north . I have never in my life seen so many Canadians cars. Wonder if they were asked to leave or just scared? Even saw a car from Nova scotia. Many , many from Quebec. 1 Quote
Global Moderator 12poundbass Posted March 21, 2020 Global Moderator Posted March 21, 2020 My wife’s job shut down. No unemployment for her. Thankfully her dog grooming is exploding! My work is getting into full gear as well. I’m now a lead tech so I’m doing work at home after hours so that means extra hours so it should help. Positive attitude will help us get through. 4 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted March 21, 2020 Global Moderator Posted March 21, 2020 No fear of job shut down here. Only thing I'm worried about is getting quarantined at work. One big module setup for a worse case scenario that we have a large scale outbreak in the building and need to stay here to prevent infecting families at home, really hoping it doesn't come to that. 1 Quote
Super User slonezp Posted March 21, 2020 Super User Posted March 21, 2020 Illinois has a shelter in place order. We're an essential business. I am working my normal 50 hours a week. Starting Monday the company is reducing to a skeleton crew. 12 of 45 employees, and the company owner will continue to work. The rest will get paid PTO. I will be one of those who continue to work. March is typically the slowest month of the year and we are slow. Quote
Super User N Florida Mike Posted March 21, 2020 Author Super User Posted March 21, 2020 I have been surprisingly busy since the slow down when I started this topic. I think maybe because people are home and they are seeing the need for us. Doesn’t seem to be any fear with the new customers. 1 Quote
Harold Scoggins Posted March 21, 2020 Posted March 21, 2020 I grew up listening to stories about the Great Depression from my late father and grandfather. My grandfather survived the Great War and the Spanish Flu of 1918 and had many stories that he shared. I've been going over those stories a lot in my head and dreams the past couple of weeks and I've found that they all share a commonality; neighbors helping neighbors. Trust me when I tell you that I am just as scared as the next person for the future, at my age, I don't know if I'll survive this. However, I have faith that our human spirit, our American spirit, will get through this. I've got a gut feeling that this may get worse before it gets better, but as long as we don't lose our humanity, and help each other, we'll get through it. 3 Quote
DanielG Posted March 21, 2020 Posted March 21, 2020 I'm 65 but my mother was 46 when she had me. So, my mother was born in 1908. I grew up with depression era people even though I was born nearly 30 years after it. Gardens, cord wood, no waste, hoarders of things that 'might' be needed some day. As a result learned to lived a very frugal life as a lifestyle, not as much as those who came before me but still fairly frugal. But like Scoggins, I've remember hearing about the depression, especially when I was wasteful. The way our interdependence of our society makes it harder to live that way but lots of adjustments can be made. We just have to bite the bullet to do it and be accepting of the experience. Take care everyone. 2 Quote
Super User N Florida Mike Posted March 25, 2020 Author Super User Posted March 25, 2020 Found out yesterday that we are considered “ essential” . Getting a lot of stops I guess because people are home and see the needs that they wouldn’t have seen had they been at work. Driving’s a breeze- no traffic!? Quote
Global Moderator TnRiver46 Posted March 25, 2020 Global Moderator Posted March 25, 2020 Glad you’re back at it mike. We are considered essential but my boss still shut down 1 Quote
detroit1 Posted March 25, 2020 Posted March 25, 2020 I'm out for 3 weeks starting today. Although we could stay 6' away from each other, we are not essential, so here I sit. About a month from taking the boat out. Dang! I'll be alright....everyone stay safe. 1 Quote
Global Moderator 12poundbass Posted March 25, 2020 Global Moderator Posted March 25, 2020 Update from me here in Michigan. My wife had to shut down her dog grooming, Sunday. All non essential business were to shutdown Monday. Thankfully my work (utility) is essential so I’m still working, but the work coming in is at a snails pace. I have project work to do so that’ll get me hours. It’s looking like we won’t have a choice but to lay a few guys off. Hopefully we can all get back to normal soon than later. 1 Quote
Super User gim Posted March 25, 2020 Super User Posted March 25, 2020 Wisconsin just issued a similar Safer at Home Order yesterday that starts today too. There are a lot of exceptions to keep the foundation of society running but I'm sure a lot of people will also be limited or out of work as well. Outdoor recreation is permitted so long as it adheres to social distancing rules. Fishing by yourself or with someone from the same household is fine, but playing a pick up game of basketball with others is not allowed. Quote
Global Moderator TnRiver46 Posted March 25, 2020 Global Moderator Posted March 25, 2020 Well now my boss says we are back at it hahah. Oh mercy 1 Quote
Super User Mobasser Posted March 25, 2020 Super User Posted March 25, 2020 For the last 2yrs I've worked for my daughter's business. She buys old homes and we remodel, repair, rehab them. We're almost done with a small house now. I've been working about 6hrs per day- or less. So, I hired in with a management company doing maintenance work at a small 37 unit apt complex. It's 24hrs per week. Because of the virus, I can't go in any occupied apts to repair things. Today is my second day here, and the place looks like a ghost town. I'm working between 2 vacant apts, getting them ready for rental. I've got a truck payment, and partial medicine pay for my wife. I gotta do something here! The apt work is not glamorous work by any means, but I feel.lucky I've got this now. To those that are out of work, hang in there. It's tough right now. My son in law recently got laid off on his job because of the virus. He took a temp job at a large grocery store- wiping everything down with disinfectant, and doing some stock work. Hard times are here for sure.Im hoping and planning next year to retire at 63. 1 Quote
