teamfyss Posted March 16, 2020 Posted March 16, 2020 Hey guys, I’ll try and keep it short. I’ve done about as much research as I can, so I decided to ask for your opinions. I found a 94 Ranger sport R72 for sale about an hour away from me, guy wanted 7k but ended up lowering it to $5500 because he needs the garage space. His pics aren’t the best (and I can post if needed) but he claims it’s always been stored inside and I won’t be disappointed. I have no idea how to value glass boats, and NADA guides seem to be of little help. The boat has a 90hp Mariner on the back, says he just got the boat back from Cabela’s and it’s all ready for the lake. With paperwork to prove it. Should I jump on this deal?? Or is that a pretty average asking price for the year/model. Thanks! Quote
Dirtyeggroll Posted March 16, 2020 Posted March 16, 2020 $5500 for a 94 Ranger R72 with a 90 HP Mercury is a high average price. For reference, I bought a '96 R70 with a 2002 Mercury 125 hp and ultrex for $5500 from a very reputable dealer last year. The boat was in excellent condition with a small blemish on the keel. The R72 boats can only fit 6'6" rods in the lock (the R70 single console can fit up to 7'3" comfortably). The R series are great hulls and very affordable (and were designed to be affordable). Lots of them on the water. 1 Quote

It comes with a Terrova trolling motor and a few other extras but that doesn’t beat your Ultrex, that alone is half the price of this boat ?. Maybe I’ll keep looking around, that’s the closest bass boat available to be since I’m in a walleye state. Not many bass guys in South Dakota. Quote

I will say that I have a knack for finding great deals, and in general, electronic accessories, no matter their retail value generally don't change the price much on used boats. Your find is still a good deal and one to consider. However, I think if you were to miss out on it, another one equally could become available in a reasonable amount of time. I doubt you will find many (if any) 17 ft R series (R70-73) boats with Ultrex on them for sale. What's your budget and how far are you willing to travel? 1 Quote

Well to be honest I can’t exactly say haha, it’s hard to plan time off of work to buy a boat without looking at it first. But if I had to guess I’d probably be okay with driving 3-6 hours away for a good deal. This will be my first bass boat so I’m a little clueless about it all. Quote

The R-series is an excellent entry level boat. 1 Quote

I’ll try, it’s a pain since I have a 16 foot crestliner in the garage. It’s either I just fish out of that for the year or I clean it up to sell it.. but if I do that I’d like to find something ASAP so I can fish haha! Quote
Super User Fishes in trees Posted March 16, 2020 Super User Posted March 16, 2020 Not to be a buzz kill - but you live in South Dakota. You guys deal with winds every day that would make me consider not going. If I lived in South Dakota, I'd be thinking some kind of multi-species Deep V or at least a modified V hull. A bass boat hull, even the kinda modified V ones like some of the Rangers, is that going to be safe enough in the day to day winds that you guys consider "normal"? 1 1 Quote
Super User J Francho Posted March 16, 2020 Super User Posted March 16, 2020 I look at buying a 20+ year old boat as if I'm buying the outboard. I'm also investing in a host of potential problems with the hull. I would want an on the water test drive, and would check every single switch, compartment hinge, and have a pro check the motor and hull. I bought a '95 Bullet with an '03 225, and it served me well for years. Any issues, and it's a very expensive fix. 4 Quote
Super User WRB Posted March 16, 2020 Super User Posted March 16, 2020 IN this time of uncertainty with everything going on people tend to panic and make terrible choices. Take your time and keep within your budget to find a great deal, it should be there! Garaged is important for used boats and single owner. It's easy to evaluate the boat and trailer visually, the OB is another mater and you need a good knowledgeable mechanic to check it out. Good luck, Tom 1 Quote
mcipinkie Posted March 16, 2020 Posted March 16, 2020 I'll add my 74 years worth of experience. In general, that doesn't sound like too bad of a deal, if you like the boat. Not sure about SD. Think I could do better here in the KC area. That's a 26 year old boat. One thing to consider when buy any old boat (car, truck, it doesn't matter) is the cost of keeping it up. Crap will either break, wear out, or fall off. If you can fix yourself, OK. If you have to buy out repairs, the money pit deepens in a hurry. 1 Quote

You’re right about the wind, but that rarely stops people around here from going fishing haha. Most of our lakes aren’t too big, and the major waves are found on the Missouri River. Which I don’t fish unless I’m in my brother’s guide boat. I’m also considering a 99 Ranger Cherokee, being that it’s aluminum I won’t have to worry about the hull as much. Quote
Jstarling96 Posted March 16, 2020 Posted March 16, 2020 Facebook has a group called bass boats under 10k. It’s all over the nation but a lot of the guys are willing to drive a reasonable distance! 2 Quote

Call me a negative Nancy but I feel like a lot of those boats are extra used and abused! But again I’ve only been a part of it for a couple of days yet, I’ll keep my eye out! Quote

Shimano_1 Posted March 16, 2020 Posted March 16, 2020 Probably a decent enough deal assuming everything checks out on it. It would have to be in excellent condition. Good luck Quote
