SWVABass Posted March 14, 2020 Posted March 14, 2020 Hey guys, new to kayak fishing. Let me say first I’ve fished two models a hobie pa 12 and a rental Malibu. im looking to know what kayaks fish well for standing up. I would like something that I can stand and flip or pitch off of an will be plenty stable. Lay out what you think are the beat for me. also if anyone knows of a good place to go look at them in the Bristol area even better. Already been to BPS and another local store here. Thanks!! Quote
walleyecrazy Posted March 15, 2020 Posted March 15, 2020 You likely won't find anything more stable than the Hobie Pro Angler. That is probably ideal for what you want to do, but it is very expensive. The Feelfree Dorado with the overdrive is a good alternative for close to half the money. 1 Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted March 15, 2020 Super User Posted March 15, 2020 I would say there are more kayaks that are designed for fishing that you can stand up than you can't these days. It also is highly dependent on the person as well. I used to stand up and fish out of my heritage redfish when others i knew thought it was tippy just paddling it around. You already took out what is one of if not the most stable boats out there in the PA12. I have a Wilderness systems ATAK 140 and it is plenty stable to stand up in and do whatever you need to do. See if that local shop has a demo days or allows for you to take out some boats to check out. 1 Quote
haggard Posted March 15, 2020 Posted March 15, 2020 I've used a PA 12 for two seasons now and while it's expensive it's awesome. High quality, attention to details and certainly very stable for standing. I use it in fresh water lakes and strong salt current. If you have any questions about it let me know, here or PM. 1 Quote
Jason.Domingo Posted March 15, 2020 Posted March 15, 2020 Native Titan’s are plenty stable as well..got a chance to demo one and was fishing in it standing up with no issues at all. These wide boats are heavy though so without a truck or a trailer transportation can be a PITA. 1 Quote
michaelb Posted March 15, 2020 Posted March 15, 2020 The standing part is easy to match, on its own. what else matters? How are you hauling this, ie does weight matter? what kind of water are you paddling, so any concern about wind or waves or current? How far are you paddling in terms of miles to get to your spots? Any price range? If you want the most stable kayak you can find, that is one thing, but if you need other aspects then you are looking for the best compromise that balances those considerations. 1 Quote
SWVABass Posted March 15, 2020 Author Posted March 15, 2020 Thanks for the reply’s guys. @michaelb stability I think is high up there, would like a pedal drive of some sort. Price I would like to stay under 1600. Willing to sacrifice speed for stability. I have a Jeep so a. Carrying it on top of it or b. Get a small trailer. Would also like to be able to put sonar on it. Other than that I don’t have to many requirements. im very open to options out there and the pros and cons of members experiences. thanks again for all the input! Quote

Not many peddle drives available in that range, and even less that have the stability I think you're looking for. There's definitely deals out there, too. I just saw a '16, but barely used Native Slayer 10 for $1350. Just gotta keep your eyes peeled, and might have to make a road trip. 1 Quote

Me and the wife both are in a Slayer Propel 10..now when we went to demo, I had every intention on leaving with a Titan but I’m only 5’7 and my wifes only 5’ and trying to constantly car top it on top of a 4runner was just not going to work. Also demoing the Slayer 10 I found it was plenty stable to stand and fish out of but car topping 2 of them is a pain as well so we ended up buying a trailer lol. 1 Quote
