Ctjoe Posted March 14, 2020 Posted March 14, 2020 Taking you back to your early years of fishing where we had one line on our spinning reels. No leaders just line to lure. What line are you now going to tie to that lure ( many new products from years ago)and why? Superline, flouro, mono ? Quote
garroyo130 Posted March 14, 2020 Posted March 14, 2020 YZH ... its super forgiving and with line&lure its very managable Quote
Super User MN Fisher Posted March 14, 2020 Super User Posted March 14, 2020 ^ Yep, yep, yep. I use it on BCs and Spinners without a leader. HOWEVER I would get some KVD L&L Conditioner and apply it - makes YZH even better. Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted March 14, 2020 Super User Posted March 14, 2020 In the old days 8# XL. As a teenager 4# XL. Today 12# AN40 (and probably just as happy with several other brands). Although I would use it along the edges of lily pads and other heavy weeds, I wouldn't be throwing into that stuff. So I'd be eliminating some places I normally would fish. Just not sure I would want to go to braid for everything. Can I have 2 lines? 45# Fins 40G braid for slop. And would work for several other things. Quote
Super User jimmyjoe Posted March 14, 2020 Super User Posted March 14, 2020 If you're talking spinning gear, it might be the same line I used on my Mitchell 300 in 1963, Trilene XL. Don't remember the test. I remember I bought an auxiliary spool for small-diameter line, and used 4 lb. test for bobber fishing for panfish. If I had to, I could use the same type of setup now as I had then. Naturally, the rod and the reel would both be lighter than the equipment then. Not necessarily better, just lighter. ? jj Quote
Super User Mobasser Posted March 15, 2020 Super User Posted March 15, 2020 Straight mono line for me. Big Game for casting reels, Stren or Trilene XL for spinning reels 1 Quote
Super User WRB Posted March 15, 2020 Super User Posted March 15, 2020 DuPont Stren and Trilene were introduced around 1959/1960 time period, Trilene XL around 1972. Garcia Royal Bonnyl mono and Western AN40 pre date both Stren and Trilene and were the first I remember using in the late 50's. Trilene XT came out in the early 70's followed by Maxima copolymer mono in the mid 70's and I used both. Berkley introduced Big Game in the early 80' and switched to Big Game for 10 and 12 lb mono for decades, still use it for crankbaits. Started finesse spinning using Maxima 5 lb Ultra Green in the early 80's and still use it. My preferred mono today is Sunline Defier Armillo 11 lb and 25 lb, 11 lb for smaller size top water and 25 lb for swimbaits. I don't use braid with a leader. Fluorocarbon I have used nearly every brand over the past 30 years starting with Sunline Shooter 14 lb in 1990 and have always had knot strength issue regardless of the knots tried. I use 7 lb Sniper for some finesse spinning and 12 lb Shooter baitcasting for a few bottom contact presentations. Tom 3 Quote
Super User jimmyjoe Posted March 15, 2020 Super User Posted March 15, 2020 9 minutes ago, WRB said: Trilene XL around 1972 You're correct @WRB ... again. Back then it was just "trilene", not Trilene XL". And the name Royal Bonnyl sure brings back memories! I think we're lucky nowadays to have such a wide range of lines from so many manufacturers, and to have a product that has much better consistency than 60 years ago. jj Quote
Super User QUAKEnSHAKE Posted March 15, 2020 Super User Posted March 15, 2020 Spinning reel its Nanofil for me. Great distance very manageable and no stretch. I use a knot that works great with it, no leader unless in-line spinner fishing. Quote
Super User Boomstick Posted March 15, 2020 Super User Posted March 15, 2020 The only time I use braid with a leader is on my spinning gear. I prefer how braid handles, so I tie on a 7ft fluorocarbon leader. As far as casting gear, I use Berkley Trilene Fluorocarbon on most of my reels, partially because I'm cheap and Bass Pro/Cabela's usually has a buy one get one sale every spring, but also because it's very good line as well. On the reel I fish poppers and buzzbaits with, I run 12lb Sufix Siege, and on reels I use for jigs in cover and frogs, I run 65lb Daiwa J-Braid Grand, and my jig rod has microguides so I can't tie on a leader, but if I'm going to use a leader I will use my reel with 17lb fluorcarbon instead. Super User NYWayfarer Posted March 15, 2020 Super User Posted March 15, 2020 Mono. It was good enough for my Grandpappy, it’s been good enough for me. I was using Stren when I was a kid, teenager, young adult (branched out to Stren Magna-Thin for awhile) and adult. I still have spools of Stren on hand along with Berkley Big Game, XL,XT and Sufix Siege. Quote
Super User FryDog62 Posted March 15, 2020 Super User Posted March 15, 2020 I would be torn between two 8 lb lines - Yo-Zuri Hybrid or Sufix Advance mono. Quote
OnthePotomac Posted March 15, 2020 Posted March 15, 2020 Have used 8lb BPS Excel 8lb mono on my spinning reels for 20 years this year. Quote
Big Swimbait Posted March 16, 2020 Posted March 16, 2020 After watching J Lee fight that 100 lb Sturgeon on Zona's show for a couple of hours, I see no reason to not use what he was using - 8lb AbrazX. Quote
gilkeybr Posted March 16, 2020 Posted March 16, 2020 For a long time it was just 30lb braid, preferably in a green color. Now its almost always....30lb braid. Just with a FC leader tied on. Quote
Super User soflabasser Posted March 20, 2020 Super User Posted March 20, 2020 If I were to only fish with 1 type of line it would be Berkley Big Game mono since this line has very good abrasion resistance, very good knot strength, and reasonably priced. 1 Quote
