Super User Maxximus Redneckus Posted March 13, 2020 Super User Posted March 13, 2020 I found some rods at a yard sale cheap ..they were in a fire not literally but rediant heat bubbled the rod finish on the top part down to the graphite. These rods vary in lenghth from 5 ft to 10 ft .is there anything i can put on them to seal up the fibers..?? Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted March 13, 2020 Posted March 13, 2020 A small area can be coated with finish epoxy. Urethane is water clear, thin and durable. I wouldn’t be surprised if the fibers are already compromised but if you got them for cheap not much to lose. Quote
Super User WRB Posted March 13, 2020 Super User Posted March 13, 2020 Test the rods by mounting a reel with line through the guides and lifting dead weigh; 2 lbs for ML, 3 lbs for M, 4 lbs for MH, 5 lbs for H. Don't lift more then a 90 degree Bend. Lightly buff off the damaged coating with light steel wool, clean with alcohol and re coat the rod blank using Urethane. Tom Quote
spoonplugger1 Posted March 13, 2020 Posted March 13, 2020 Rod blanks don't need a finish, it's just paint, agree with above, rod blanks are cured in a big oven to make them a rigid tube, anything over 250 deg. will damage them irrepairably. They can fail at anytime. Quote
