CFFF 1.5 Posted January 11, 2009 Posted January 11, 2009 What do I need. I think I just burned up the 5 speed switch. I got in some shallow water yesterday with a lot of mud and we were kind of stuck so I turned the trolling motor on reverse high to try to get us out of there. After about 20 seconds on high there was smoke coming out of the head of the motor and near the battery. I have a Minn Kota Endura 46lbs Thrust transom mount motor. The motor did turn back on briefly (like 3 secs) about 30 minutes after this happened but now it won't do anything. I took the head off and the switch smells like burnt plastic but there isn't anything else inside the head that looks burnt. Help Please. I found this replacement part. http://www.northlandmarine.com/MinnKotaEndura5SpeedSwitch.htm. Has anyone ordered from northlandmarine.com or is there a better place to order trolling motor parts from. Thanks. Quote
JShrock07 Posted January 11, 2009 Posted January 11, 2009 I can't help you with the burnt up motor but I can help you so it doesn't happen again. I had this happen to me and I had to buy a new TM so while I was purchasing a new one the guy at gander mountain told me to get this.... http://www.wiringproducts.com/index1.html?lang=en-us&target=d11.html&gclid=CL65wanxhpgCFQFvGgod6hQbDg It has worked great for me! CFFF 1.5 Posted January 11, 2009 Author Posted January 11, 2009 Yeah I have already planned on buying a circuit breaker. Quote
skillet Posted January 11, 2009 Posted January 11, 2009 Redoing an aluminum bass boat. Upgrading to larger wire for TM and definitely adding circuit breaker... skillet Quote
bass or bass ? Posted January 11, 2009 Posted January 11, 2009 CFFF1.5, I made myself a push pole for extreme shallow water. Get 2 pieces of 1" PVC pipe and cut them down to 6 to 8 feet in length. Glue male and female threaded fittings to the ends on two pieces, then glue a cap on the handle end and glue a "T" fitting with plugs to the other piece. With this you can push your boat in shallow water . Works great for around $10. Just screw the 2 pieces together when you need the pole, and the 2 pieces are easy to store in your boat. Super User cart7t Posted January 11, 2009 Super User Posted January 11, 2009 Replace the switch and check all other connectors in the head for oxidation and clean and replace as necessary. Throwing a TM into high puts a tremendous amount of current through the wiring of a trolling motor. If there is corrosion or oxidation on connectors, the resistance of that connection will cause it to overheat and then burn. I've had it happen to me before. Quote
sneaker Posted January 12, 2009 Posted January 12, 2009 When you get a circuit breaker for your motor look for a type 1 breaker. This breaker is a manual reset breaker that requires you to push a small button on the part to reset it. The alternative is a type 2 breaker, it will reset as soon as the internal current sensing element cools off. This results in power being re-applied to the motor when you don't expect it, and possibly causing an accident. In case the seller doesn't know the type of the breaker he is offering, look for the little reset button on the part. Don't go home without it. They are the only kind the coast guard will approve in this type of application. Not that you are concerned with the approval of the C/G, but there is a good reason for their concern. Quote
moloch16 Posted January 12, 2009 Posted January 12, 2009 I'm a bit confused about the "type 1" vs "type 2" circuit breaker. In the link above under the category "standard breaker" there are "type 1" breakers listed as "auto reset". So it seems type 1 doesn't always mean manual reset? (Edit: It seems type 3 are manual reset so maybe you meant type 3 instead of type 1) Also it's hard to tell from the link what breaker NitroMan is recommending. Is it the "standard breaker" or the "High Amp Waterproof Circuit Breaker"? Finally, what amp do I need for a 55lb thrust TM? Thanks for any help! Quote

Thankyou, I have gotten into it a little more and some of the wires have burned through the outer rubber coating. I'm assuming I need to replace any part that is melted through. Do I need to check the wires that run through the shaft to the trolling motor foot to make sure they didn't melt also? Quote
