Johnpenguin Posted March 10, 2020 Posted March 10, 2020 I started a forum a little ago about mono lines. A lot of people on here seemed to be huge fans of big game, so I decided to order some. Just did a straight strength test between stren and big game of the same diameter(which is 14lb stren and 12lb big game). I tested them both 3 times with three yards. Big game had the strongest run(barely), but the average went to stren. Stren was way more consistent and broke at about 14.5lb each time. The big game was the opposite. The lowest it broke at was 8.5lb, but also broke at almost 16. Another thing that I noticed was that the stren stretched a good amount more than big game. Just thought I would share my experiment. 1 2 Quote
mrpao Posted March 10, 2020 Posted March 10, 2020 Interesting test. I've used BG for many years but never actually test it against another competitor. All I know is that its pretty tough and has landed many a fish. I've caught bass, catfish, stripers and different saltwater fish on it. I really dont have a reason to change. I tried stren many years ago and didn't like the memory so I never tried it again. Quote

I tried stren many years ago and didn't like the memory so I never tried it again. I just redid the test because of the results I got with BG. BG was much more consistent this time. There must have been a Knick in the line from the first test. I am much happier with BG now. Also, The new stren has much less memory that BG these days. So what I have learned is that both lines are great. What we have these days to catch fish is a blessing. 1 Quote
Super User dodgeguy Posted March 11, 2020 Super User Posted March 11, 2020 Big Game has always been a great line. It's not my favorite but it's still awesome. For the price it can't be beat. 1 Quote

jbrew73 Posted March 11, 2020 Posted March 11, 2020 I tried big game on several reels and just couldn’t bring myself to drink the koolaid. Don’t get me wrong it is really solid line for the money but I’ll spend a few cents more and go back to Stren. I just like the smoothness and manageability vs big game. If I want a “better” nylon mono I use sunline defied armilo. Quote
Super User FishTank Posted March 11, 2020 Super User Posted March 11, 2020 I like both but there are better options. Big Game is great for tough, cheap line and Stren is good for an all purpose line. My gripe with both is that they tend not last too long and loose their properties quickly but each are good for the price. Quote

I also like Sufix Elite. My favorite in an any line..... Seaguar Invizx 12lb. I use it for just about everything except topwater. I just bought my first spool of Sunline Defier. It maybe too soon but it maybe my new favorite mono but it's pricey for sure. 2 Quote

I use mono only as a leader, so do you think Defier has enough stretch for this application? Quote
Super User WRB Posted March 11, 2020 Super User Posted March 11, 2020 Define your test set up; length of line, wet or dry, knots used, rate of pulling force etc. Tom Quote

I only have used it once so it maybe too early to tell if it would work for leader. As far as stretch goes, it doesn't seem to stretch much but I used it in 40 degree water this past weekend. I think I will need to fish it for some more and at better water temps to tell. Also, just a personal preference, I like FC for leader if I am using it with braid which would be rare. Abrazx would be my choice for this but I tend to use whatever I have left over from a spool of FC now. What I like about though....Abrazx tends to be super tough, last a long time, and has minimal stretch. Quote

Dry. Improved clinch knot. 19 minutes ago, FishTank said: I only have used it once so it maybe too early to tell if it would work for leader. Super User WRB Posted March 11, 2020 Super User Posted March 11, 2020 Thanks, my guess is you are pulling using a digital scale without controlled pulling force rates or any accurate method to measure strectch prior to knot failure if indeed the line is breaking at the knot. Big Game mono is stronger then FC line compared by diameter and a excellent value per yard of line. Caught hundreds of big bass using Big Game mono over the years. The only mono that I found that is stronger is Sunline Defier Armillo Nylon but is a lot more expensive per yard. Thank you for sharing. Tom Quote
Super User Raul Posted March 11, 2020 Super User Posted March 11, 2020 Don't you ever dare to badmouth Big Game or you will be in trubble .... 3 Quote
Super User GreenPig Posted March 11, 2020 Super User Posted March 11, 2020 When I happen to run low on CXX for my swimbait reels Big Game is what I'll spool up with. On standard BC I'll run Stren when fishing mono. Quote

Super User J Francho Posted March 11, 2020 Super User Posted March 11, 2020 The only line I use that could be considered "nylon mono" is Seaguar Rippin' mono, and I don't use it for bass. I'd put it right there next to Sufix. Both are great lines. Quote
Super User Catt Posted March 11, 2020 Super User Posted March 11, 2020 The advantage with Big Game is abrasion resistance & shock absorption. I've seen it too many times where Big Game was seriously abrated & didn't fail. Tried em all...none come close! 6 Quote
Hulkster Posted March 11, 2020 Posted March 11, 2020 i used to use Big Game but switched over to Sufix Siege on both spinning and baitcasting gear. its stronger and much more limp. love the stuff. Quote
Super User NYWayfarer Posted March 11, 2020 Super User Posted March 11, 2020 I change line...a lot. I am constantly changing lures on the two set-ups I bring with me. All that cutting and re-tying depletes a spool of line after a few trips. Big Game is a great balance of quality and low cost. A big spool can be purchased for $7-$9 Sometimes $3 on clearance. It helps keep my expenses low and confidence high that I am not going to loose a fish. Stren is another good choice. I always have a few spools of 8# on hand. Stren makes a line called "High Impact" which I assume is their version of Big Game. I have not tried it yet to make a comparison. 2 Quote

Tom Ya like I said earlier I’m not spending that much for mono that is barely superior. BG is definitely unmatched for its price. I think stren is another good value 1 Quote

Super User J Francho Posted March 11, 2020 Super User Posted March 11, 2020 Most nylon mono lines are co or multi polymers. 2 Quote
