People always want to ignore this advice for some reason.  There are plenty of carts out there that are great and don't need to use scuppers.

I don't even understand the allure of scupper carts. They're a huge pain in the rear to get in.

I used a scupper cart for 2-3 years with my first yak without issue, but the posts on it were finned rubber that tapered out, like this:

This style spreads the force better then a straight pole.  I also never pulled my

yak loaded with anything and used a loop of webbing around the handle so the yak was kept at a low angle, almost parallel to the ground, again reducing the load on the scupper.

When I bought a nicer yak I upgraded to a C-Tug, but I can’t stand it, so the search continues. I have a Slayer 10, so carrying it work fine for anywhere I am launching from a ramp.

I agree.  I got my first one last year when I got a Hobie.  I use it still, but it is a PITA.  I can't take my yak between truck and launch loaded.  With my old yak/cart, I could load at the truck and cart down to the launch.  Not a big deal when ramp/launch is slow and I can park truck reasonably close.  But at a long, busy ramp, or at a mass-launch tournament, there's no good answer with a scupper cart.

Can stake out poles damage the scuppers?  Say you stand up in it and the yak rocks around a bit. I don't anchor in current, just wondering if I should be concerned before I make one. Making it thin seems like a good idea.

They could, depending on the quality of the kayak. (I doubt it would hurt a Hobie.) I would fix a carabiner to the pole and then affix the carabiner to the anchor trolley.

Hobie are the only kayaks that are designed to use a scupper cart I believe.  And yes, you absolutely can damage a boat by anchoring through the scooper, besides that, who wants a pole sticking up in the middle of their boat.  I'd much rather use my trolley to be able to adjust for the wind.

Absolutely. On top of that, it can be dangerous. Unlike using it on an anchor trolley, there's no "give". So if you take a wake broadside, you run a high chance of flipping.

I guess if you’re using a long enough pole it might be an issue, but I use a 6 foot one, so I am at most sitting in 3 feet of water, so getting waked is almost outside the realm of reasonable possibility.

I've read about people using the poles with a an anchor trolley. What keeps the pole upright? Seems like it would just fall over unless you really stab it into the ground. Do you add another component to the trolley?

You just push it into the bottom. Obviously works best on dirt/sand, unless you have a powered micro pole.
