n8cas4 Posted March 6, 2020 Posted March 6, 2020 Hair Jig and Ned Head high-end Rod: 1/8 - 3/16 (very rarely lighter than 1/8 or heavier than 3/16 ounces) St. Croix Legend Elite ES 70 MLF or ES 610 MXF ? I'd like to get an elite or legend X OR a G. Loomis GLX. Thank you for your help! P.S. If you like different rod power / action for hair jig vs ned head - I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts Quote
Hulkster Posted March 6, 2020 Posted March 6, 2020 i thrown them on the E6X 892S (7'5) which i believe comes in a GLX version. might be worth looking into. The extra length really lets you launch them. Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted March 6, 2020 Super User Posted March 6, 2020 Diawa Tatula Elite Seth Fieder Neko Rig rod. Really like the carbon fiber guides. Very nice. A-Jay 4 Quote

A-Jay I picked up this rod this year to be used for this exact purpose. I am planning on getting it out for the first time this weekend. Glad to hear that you like yours. My initial impressions of the rod are great just from having it in hand, and not having used it yet. 1 Quote
Nelson Delaney Posted March 7, 2020 Posted March 7, 2020 Take a look at the Loomis nrx 901s & 902s. Quote
Super User Chris at Tech Posted March 7, 2020 Super User Posted March 7, 2020 ML F or XF for the St Croix 1 Quote
n8cas4 Posted March 7, 2020 Author Posted March 7, 2020 I'm curious about the longer rods... Now that I use braid to fluoro for everything, you can get them to where you need them with 7 foot rods. Do you lose any feel / sensitivity with the longer rods? I'm used to throwing them on 7 foot or less (dx702sf Dobyn Champion / 68mxf st croix legend elite). I think I'm leaning towards an Extra Fast tip as opposed to the fast tip. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted March 7, 2020 Global Moderator Posted March 7, 2020 I use a St. Croix LTB 6' 10" ML/XF for those baits. It does an excellent job at it too. 1 Quote
Finessegenics Posted March 7, 2020 Posted March 7, 2020 Maybe you should use this as an opportunity to get your hands on one of the new Legend Xtreme rods and let us know how it goes ? 6’10 ML XF model could be the ticket https://www.tacklewarehouse.com/St_Croix_Legend_Xtreme_Spinning_Rods/descpage-LXSR.html Quote

Definitely felt great in hand. i had a brief thought to treat myself, and then decided it was a better long-term strategy to not risk life and limb at the hands of an angry wife. 2 Quote

tbone1993 Posted March 8, 2020 Posted March 8, 2020 I sold an 8' 6" ml legend bass and honestly I want to buy one for myself. Perfect hair jig rod. Quote
Finessegenics Posted March 8, 2020 Posted March 8, 2020 I have no experiences with longer rods for bass fishing, I’ll just be giving advice on what I’ve heard. A lot of people will say a 7’6 ML XF rod is best for hair jigs or ned rigs. Basically, it’s good for very very light presentations. Specifically 1/8 and less when you aren’t expecting the bass to choke the bait. More like a soft inhale. This is because you will “see” the bite before you feel it. The long rod with the soft tip of the ML will begin to deflect (showing the bite), before you can even feel it. Basically, the tip will bend ever so slightly and you’ll realize you have a fish on there. This is probably amplified when using hi-vis braid. 1 Quote
tbone1993 Posted March 8, 2020 Posted March 8, 2020 I wanted to test this out last year but honestly didn't get a chance to. They have some good points, a10 ft rod would be ideal but ya Quote
TBAG Posted March 8, 2020 Posted March 8, 2020 I don't use a real high end rod for my ned rigs and don't ever throw hair jigs. I use a Dobyns 702s Sierra as my ned rig specific rod and it's done the job with no complaints so far. I don't think the sensitivity is a huge factor for Ned rigs, hell the inventor uses cheap Walmart bought rods. I choose to spend my $ on high end rods for heavier jigs and texas rig worms. Now, if money was no factor I'd definitely use a Loomis NRX 802s or 852s. Quote
WI_Angler1989 Posted March 8, 2020 Posted March 8, 2020 -St Croix Legend Tournament Bass 610mlxf -Daiwa Tatula Elite 7mlf I've used my Legend Tournament Bass 610mlxf the most for Neds. It works really well, but is a bit stiffer than my Daiwa Tatula Elite 7mlf. Extra fast vs fast makes a big dif for me. The Tatula LAUNCHES Ned rigs! Quote

I also like hooking into fish with a lighter tip so that it has a bit more give. Less likely to break the light wire hooks. Quote

I think Light Fast 1 power would be a little to soft for 1/8 or 3/16oz - 2 power is probably what will work best for me if I grab a g. loomis. Quote

I think you would be surprised as to how well it works with 1/8 and 3/16. I have done a lot of bait checking in my pond to see how well it works with different baits and in my opinion it fishes a little heavier than a 1 power since it is in their JWR series Quote
