Lake Gaston

My father is retiring and moving down to lake Gaston in the next year. I was thinking about folllowing him down there, we both are big bass heads. How’s the job market around that area? I do maintenance mechanical work. Sorry I apologize that it’s not a bass related question. Thank you

I have not answer for you but it's is a bass related question. You need to build that nest in the area, job, home, etc. in order to get on to the bass.

It's an appropriate question because lots of people here in all walks of life and some undoubtedly live in that area.

Sweet lake. We've vacationed there several times and plan to in the

future. As far as mechanic stuff, there's a lot of repair for boats and

jet skis in the area that I've seen. Perhaps that's something you can

look into....

 

And might consider hiring a guide at least once to get a general idea

of the lake. It's big, lots of boats, lots of bass, perch, catfish, sunfish....

Hi... Newbie here but not to Gaston or the area.  I live in NC just east of Ral so I am about an hour away from Gaston and fish there a lot.  There is not much up there right around the lake.  There are some businesses but it is somewhat rural.  Really the closest major city is probably Raleigh.

 

If it were me I would look anywhere Raleigh and north.  There is a lot of industrial type stuff along US 1 from Va to Raleigh as well as along I85 that I would believe would have to have some mechanical positions.  The Raleigh / Durham grows like crazy and is really not a bad drive to Gaston or Kerr and there are plenty right here in Raleigh/Durham.

 

Gaston can be a zoo on the weekends in the summer...fyi.  It is a popular lake with a lot of big $ houses on it.   Nearby Kerr is great also and maybe not as crowded.

 

It is really a nice place to live.

I live in the Triangle (Raleigh/Durham/Chapel hill).

 

There is a lot of fish-able water here, a lot of pleasure boaters, and a lot of economic growth so lots of trade/construction work.

 

But it is a rat race.  If you are used to a slower pace of life like I was, originally coming from Lancaster Pennsylvania, this will be a culture shock.  Don't let the internet fool you, cost of living is much higher here, if you are willing to drive an hour (not including traffic), the cost of living is very competitive, to quite low.  But the jobs aren't in those places, and traffic with give you a 1-2hr drive to work and then home.

 

Average home cost is over 300k in Apex where I live, we settled here for now due to good schools, but unless you are college educated and work in big pharma or tech in the research triangle, it is tough to find a good paying job with benefits that doesn't work you to death that could be considered a career.  

 

Good Manufacturing jobs that you can put 20-30-40 years in and retire are for the most part nonexistent here. I started over doing a plumbing apprenticeship, and I make very good money at this point (more than I did after working 17 years at RR Donnelley in Lancaster, but I can't keep up this pace for long (married, kids, etd).

 

We are moving to FL soon to help care for my wifes parents, and take over their nursury.  I will not have fond memories of living in the triangle.
