ReggieT Posted March 5, 2020 Posted March 5, 2020 All my fishing career I've slung nothing but Rooster Tails as far as inline spinners are concerned. Caught a bunch of hybrids, white bass, and some decent large-mouths. Yet, after much research and a zillion threads about other choices I decided to up my game and add these little fellows!? I'm excited to sling these in Wheeler Dam tailrace and other moving water. The H&H Spinner just seems like a nifty lil lure to toss in some ponds and shallow water coves I frequent. What are you studs thoughts and experiences with these lures? Here some pics of what I nabbed/ordered today: H&H Original Spinner Lure × 2 Willow Leaf Double / #08 (White+White) $3.98 H&H Original Spinner Lure × 3 Single Spinner / #35 (Chart+Chart/White) $5.97 Mepps Aglia Dressed 1/4oz Silver/White - Mepps Aglia Dressed 1/4oz Silver/Gray - Mepps 1/3 oz Aglia Dressed Treble Hook - Quote
Jaderose Posted March 5, 2020 Posted March 5, 2020 I'm a big fan of H&H and if I'm throwing a spinner bait, 95% of the time it's an H&H. The only time I don't is if I need something a little bigger. I will give a bit of info.....when you get them, you have to put the hook on yourself and you WILL do it wrong. It's just one of those things...lol 1 Quote
Super User jimmyjoe Posted March 5, 2020 Super User Posted March 5, 2020 If we're still talking multi-species, I think you made a good choice there. But for largemouth, I use only #5 Mepps Aglia any more. Used to use 1/2 oz. Panther Martin, but I quit. Mepps does better for largemouth. I still use Roostertails, but not for largemouth. I use them for pike and sandies, and they do fairly well. I use spinners in bright colors for contrast, not mimicry; I throw them deep at the thermocline in lakes and in muddy water in rivers. My bright colors are silver, chartreuse and pink. Pink works especially well if there are crappie around for the bass to eat. If I target the margins, I try to mimic forage fish colors. That's a game that has no end. ? I think that's why spinner manufacturers make so many colors. ? Remember .... YMMV. Good luck! jj BTW - I've taken to using the double-bladed Aglias spinners by Mepps. They're made in #3 (5/16 oz.) and #5 (11/16 oz.). They can be retrieved VERY slowly. If you're in a situation where a slow retrieve is beneficial, you might want to try them. jj 1 Quote
Super User MIbassyaker Posted March 5, 2020 Super User Posted March 5, 2020 Mepps is a high-quality spinner, and the silver blades are actual silver, not nickel, meaning they flash much more brightly. The shallow-running Mepps Aglia and slightly-deeper running Comet and Black Fury are dynamite bass lures in sizes 3, 4 and 5 for both largemouth and smallmouth. They will catch many other species as well. 1 1 Quote
ABart61 Posted March 5, 2020 Posted March 5, 2020 A number 3 Mepps and Creek Smallies go together like a PB&J your mother made you when you were a kid. 1 1 Quote
Super User scaleface Posted March 5, 2020 Super User Posted March 5, 2020 Those H&h spinners will work good below the dam . Are there any stripers or hybrids there ? They come with a double hook and I have had the hook come off several times battling hard fighting fish . Wrap a bit of wire around the shank to keep it from happening to you . 1 Quote
jeffo21 Posted March 6, 2020 Posted March 6, 2020 H&H spinners are great used them for years around where I grew up in Okla. it just didn't hurt as much to lose a buck spinner vs 5 or 6 bucks spinner and they catch a lot of bass. 1 Quote
Super User Fishes in trees Posted March 6, 2020 Super User Posted March 6, 2020 I think that Mepps & Panther Martins are better in-line spinners than rooster tails, primarily because it seems that the blades start to spin faster than the rooster tails do. I think that the Panther Martin baits twist the line less than other in-line spinners. I won't throw an in-line spinner unless first I've attached an appropriate size ball bearing swivel or snap swivel. 1 Quote

How about adding a split ring? Quote

Jaderose Posted March 6, 2020 Posted March 6, 2020 Split ring would change the geometry of the hook and cause it to hang off the lure sideways. Also, the thinner wire of a split ring would make it easier for the hook to come off. Not harder. I'm actually surprised that has been an issue for anyone. Seems to me that once those things are on there (always incorrectly for me for some darn reason!) they are a bear to get off. 1 Quote

The split ring would be placed around the double shanl making it impossible to come off , not to connect the hook to the lure . I have had the double hooks come off several times during a fight . 1 Quote

You must be fighting better fish than I am. 1 Quote

ReggieT Posted March 7, 2020 Author Posted March 7, 2020 If it becomes too complex, I'll find a different type of hook that will suffice. I'll not be bested by a baby spinner bait design!? Thanks for the feedback and advice...I know what to prepare for now.? Quote
CHIP-MAINE Posted March 9, 2020 Posted March 9, 2020 #1 lure in my box is #4 and #5 mepps . like the silver or gold blade and white or yellow hair so i can see them better but i think the vibration with the bigger blade is what does the trick 1 Quote
ReggieT Posted March 10, 2020 Author Posted March 10, 2020 Wife & I went for a little "field testing" yesterday. I tossed a black 1/8 oz Panther Martin for about 15 minutes, I caught a dink bass & had 2 bites. Slung the 1/4 oz #3 Mepps with squirrel tail, got a couple of swirls that was it. But, just got in a 1/3 oz #4 Mepps today brown fur/red tail. Anxious to toss it around...I may tip with half a night crawler or small minnow and see what happens.? Quote
