Jcj90 Posted March 4, 2020 Posted March 4, 2020 Does anyone have experience with 1000 shimanos on 5’ ultralight rods? I’ve always used 500’s on my 5’ UL rods but the 1000’s have a larger spool for better line manageability with 4lb mono. My only concern is there is a 1.5oz weight increase between reels which is a lot for an ultralight setup. Thanks Quote
Finessegenics Posted March 4, 2020 Posted March 4, 2020 I had a 1000 size sienna on my UL setup. Rod was 5’6 though and not 5’...even at that, it felt unbalanced but still very light...I guess it’s a trade off you’d have to make. The 1000 size reel definitely increased casting distance for me. If you plan on buying your setup in store, ask if you can have a 1000 mounted onto the rod of your choice. Quote

Yeah that’s what I thought this rod is mainly used Bobber fishing so the extra weight prob couldn’t hurt too much. Daiwa makes some 750 sized reels which are in between I may have to look into Quote
mrpao Posted March 4, 2020 Posted March 4, 2020 Which 1000 size reel are you placing on the 5' ultra light rod. The stradic 1000 ci4+ is around 5.8 oz and should balance ok on a short rod. 1 Quote
Super User jimmyjoe Posted March 4, 2020 Super User Posted March 4, 2020 I have a 1000 Nasci on a 7' UL rod, and it's OK. I would NOT want that same reel on a 5' rod. Just me. jj Quote

Super User JustJames Posted March 5, 2020 Super User Posted March 5, 2020 Another reason to go with Daiwa LT series with below 7oz on 1000 size. I have 5’6 Presso pair with Sahara 750 FB 6.8oz and is perfect. Then I got Daiwa Legalis LT 1000 also @6.8oz could be happier. Anyway sold my legalis and upgrade to Tatula LT 2000 at below 6oz, can’t ask for more. Quote

With bobbers you have plenty of options, use bigger bobber to add more weight of jig head or use weighted bobber itself. My bobbers setup is 6’6 Shimano Sensilite and 7’ Spinmatic. Quote

I couldn't use a rod under 7' for bobber work. jj Quote

Jaybert Posted March 5, 2020 Posted March 5, 2020 I picked up a new stradic FL 1000 to put on my compre 5.5’ ultralight. very happy with the balance and would recommend if you can stretch the budget. Stradic FL only weighs 6.5 ounces. The ancient shimano tx500f I replaced was 5.6 Ounces. 10 times the reel at less than an oz more weight. Stradic balances a bit better to me, bit more weight keeps the tip up but balance is of course different for everyone 1 Quote
Super User Crestliner2008 Posted March 5, 2020 Super User Posted March 5, 2020 It's your choice to stick with Shimano. I use to be a Shimano die hard fan for many past decades. (My favorite was the old 750 for UL use.) That is until they screwed up the friction ring design and put several of my reels out of commission. Their re-design to alleviate that problem kicked up the price considerably. So, I switched to Pflueger Presidents for many applications now. Have never looked back. The 20 series is great for UL use. Is that the issue of when they get wet? Quote
Super User Crestliner2008 Posted March 6, 2020 Super User Posted March 6, 2020 No. It appears over time and heavy use. Shimano was aware of the problem, which why they kicked up the price to redesign it. Quote
