riverbasser Posted March 3, 2020 Posted March 3, 2020 Fished with a partner recently who had just purchased a Helix 10 mega. I was looking forward to seeing the upgraded imaging on Si/Di but what really blew me away was the sonar. We were very clearly marking groups of fish that his older Lowrance and Standard Helix 7 showed only vague globs that were undistinguishable. Anyone know what changed 2D sonar wise on these new units? I wanted a mega for the SI but the difference in sonar blew me away 1 Quote
Dirtyeggroll Posted March 3, 2020 Posted March 3, 2020 How "new" is the unit? In the last year Humminbird has released an upgraded HW (High-wide) with a "Low-Q transducer. The technicalities of how the hardware and function compares to other brands, I do not know. However, this is the 2D sonar technology that Humminbird claims produces the best returns. I have it on 2 of my units and I think it is fantastic. Quote
Super User Tennessee Boy Posted March 3, 2020 Super User Posted March 3, 2020 They added chirp 2D sonar to the latest generation of Helix and Solix units which gives them higher resolution returns. Quote

Maybe 2 years old. 58 minutes ago, Tennessee Boy said: They added chirp 2D sonar to the latest generation of Helix and Solix units which gives them higher resolution returns. I am almost positive both the standard 7 and 10 mega are chirp sonar Quote
Super User WRB Posted March 3, 2020 Super User Posted March 3, 2020 Early sonar units before Chirp were single frequency, multi frequency units with Chirp display better target separation and details. Electronics are constantly improving. Tom Quote

The latest generation introduced dual spectrum CHIRP in 2D sonar. https://www.humminbird.com/learn/sonar/dual-spectrum-CHIRP?_ga=2.257626635.1037008152.1583243369-343789696.1538052727 1 Quote
Fastbee Posted March 23, 2020 Posted March 23, 2020 Maybe the biggest thing is the increased resolution on the newer units. CHIRP is great and helps but the pixel count on the two older units is nothing compared to that newer Helix 10 Mega. Quote
