junyer357 Posted March 2, 2020 Posted March 2, 2020 Im looking at buying a g-loomis glx for throwing 3/8 jigs pretty much exclusively. Will be paired with a tatula sv and 20# floro. It will be a do all, throw anywhere jig, brush, laydowns, grass, docks, etc.. I am debating between the 854 and 855. Ive ruled out the 894 and 895 since i know from experience i do not skip well with anything 7'3" or longer. It would be my first loomis, so im not sure about the power and ratings. My current rod is a 7'm-f avid, and i really like it very well, but i want to take the next step up in sensitivity. Quote
waymont Posted March 2, 2020 Posted March 2, 2020 I use 3 and 4 power Loomis rods for 3/8oz jigs with 30lb braid to 15-17lb leaders for the same cover you mentioned. I live in the Midwest so the bass aren’t usually over 6lbs, except for 3 so far. Hoping for more. I use 6’6” to 7’1” JWR and MBR versions. Quote
Siebert Outdoors Posted March 2, 2020 Posted March 2, 2020 I use a GLX 854 for pretty much all 3/8 jigs I throw. Quote
Super User NHBull Posted March 2, 2020 Super User Posted March 2, 2020 Given the universality what ever power you choose, I would lean MBR Quote
Super User WRB Posted March 2, 2020 Super User Posted March 2, 2020 Loomis jig & worm rods use 4 power. Tom Quote
TigerBassAU Posted March 3, 2020 Posted March 3, 2020 854 for skipping and pitching 3/8 - 1/2 jigs in cover, grass, and under docks. Quote
Super User FishTank Posted March 3, 2020 Super User Posted March 3, 2020 I have the 803C GLX and it's great for skipping and tossing 3/8 jigs. I like the shorter length for skipping and it may feel light but it has plenty of hook setting power. It's sort of surprising. I also use it for weightless senkos. Just a great rod. Quote
TBAG Posted March 3, 2020 Posted March 3, 2020 I'd go with a 4 power. I had both the 853c and 854c in IMX pros and sold them to upgrade. I bought a 853c NRX and tried to throw a 3/8 jig plus trailer and it seemed too heavy for the rod. I'm now deciding on what to get, either 854c, 894c, or 873c CRR to throw 3/8 and the occasional 1/2 oz jigs. Quote

The nrx 853c has slightly less backbone than the glx 853. the glx 853jwr is an almost the perfect rod imo. Can work 3/8 jigs effortlessly. But since you want a do it all rod id say go with the glx mbr844. Now that is the perfect rod. Quote

Yeah, I can definitely tell a difference in the IMX pro and NRX 853 backbones. Quote
gilkeybr Posted March 4, 2020 Posted March 4, 2020 I was sadly disappointed in my GLX853. To me all the action in the rod was in the last 6" and the rest felt very rigid. I much prefer the feel of my 852 and 854 (NRX). If I were throwing 3/8oz jigs, I would reach for my 852. Quote

I tried to throw a 3/8 oz jig plus trailer on my 853 NRX and it still felt under powered for that size jig. Quote

I don't see the 852c GLX MBR in the current line up but the 842c GLX MBR is rated up to 5/8 oz. The NRX 852c JWR which is what I believe gilkeybr was referencing is only rated to 3/8 oz. Quote
junyer357 Posted March 4, 2020 Author Posted March 4, 2020 Thanks for the answers so far. Why do some suggest the mbr over the jwr? Ive been mainly looking at the jwr. I understand the mbr is a slower more general purpose taper, where im looking more for maximum sensitivity. 1 Quote

But, if this is a specific jig rod then I think you should go with the JWR. But like I said above my opinion could be counted as null since I have no experience with the MBR. I do have experience with IMX Pro and the NRX in both JWR rods and I don't think you'll regret any rod you choose. Quote
