Southcoast Bassin Posted February 25, 2020 Posted February 25, 2020 Ok fellas ... Yes I know both great reels Question is ... What do you feel one does better than the other ? Pitching ... Casting... crankin .. etc. I do notice that the Metanium scratches up pretty easy ... Keep in mind that I’m talking pre 2020 models. Let me know your thoughts please thanks and Tight lines ! Quote
Spy Posted February 25, 2020 Posted February 25, 2020 Even if they were priced the same I'd take the Chronarch every time if for no other reason than long term durability of the brass gear set. Quote
Southcoast Bassin Posted February 25, 2020 Author Posted February 25, 2020 Ok ... that’s good to know. thank you is the gear set in the older Metanium not quite as strong as the Chronarchs ? I do notice that the frame really chips allot on the Metanium If the gears are allot stronger in the Chronarch than its a real no-brainer Quote
Spy Posted February 26, 2020 Posted February 26, 2020 The Met utilizes an aluminum alloy gear set for weight savings. Nothing wrong with that and I've never had any issue with them in other reels I own but I don't feel the trade off is worth it given a choice. 1 Quote
Southcoast Bassin Posted February 26, 2020 Author Posted February 26, 2020 Ahh ... ok well that makes sense. appreciate the insight. Im curious now if the new 2020 model Metanium uses brass gears ? Or if it’s improved over the older model ? It looks real similar to the Chronarch Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted February 26, 2020 Posted February 26, 2020 The alloy gears are actually harder than brass but the hardness and light weight lend to sound and vibration some find off putting. The hard alloy can be brittle if the reel is cranked hard under load it might be an issue. If the rod is used to move the fish and reel to take up slack no problem. 1 Quote
bunz559 Posted March 3, 2020 Posted March 3, 2020 From my experience, the Metanium has been a much more durable reel. I have several Metanium MGL's and they fish wonderfully time after time with little maintenance. Tension knob never feels sloppy and braking system is always on point. On the other hand, my Chronarch MGL seems to have gone down the drain. It fishes well, but needs much more maintenance and cleaning to keep it running smooth. Could it be just mine? Sure. But I'm glad I spent the money into Metaniums than the Chronarchs. Heck, I'd even say my K's have held up better than the Chronarch. Quote
Spy Posted March 3, 2020 Posted March 3, 2020 I've had no issues with my Chronarch MGL but I remember there being an 'MGL' specific problem with both of the reels in question, gear related if I recall. Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted March 3, 2020 Posted March 3, 2020 There’s no actual problem with the gears as far as I’ve seen. Some people just don’t like the inevitable sound and feel resulting from the light weight. Quote

There's been countless posts over on TT about the gear buzzing and swapping to curado K gears to fix the issue. Quote

Right, I just don’t think the light gears are defective, just a trait some find annoying. I’d lean toward just buying a reel with brass gears to begin If I was that concerned but different strokes! Bandersnatch Posted March 3, 2020 Posted March 3, 2020 I own both, the metanium any day, twice on Sunday, not even close Quote

johnD. Posted March 3, 2020 Posted March 3, 2020 The 2020 Metanium has brass gears, it should not be a issue. 1 Quote
Southcoast Bassin Posted March 3, 2020 Author Posted March 3, 2020 Yeah I can’t wait for them to come in... Im setting my son up with a few of my Chronarchs ... In my head I’m giving myself an excuse to buy a few more ... LOL Quote
FordsnFishin Posted March 3, 2020 Posted March 3, 2020 Honestly the only smart move here would be for you to buy both of them, see which you like better, than obviously send me the other one. 2 3 Quote
Southcoast Bassin Posted March 3, 2020 Author Posted March 3, 2020 I like the way you think ! LOL Quote
OnthePotomac Posted March 3, 2020 Posted March 3, 2020 Never had a Chronarch problem with gears in mine. Shimano strongly recommends that their ACE2 drag grease be used on the brass drive gears (Cal's is the same thing), which I have done since day one of purchase. I have a varied Chronarch inventory and all are humming along just fine with their original build components: 1 Chronarch 6.2:1, 6 years old 3 Chronarch HG 7.6:1, 2 are 5 years old and 1 is 3 years old I Chronarch MGL XG 8.1:1, 2 years old. Super User fishballer06 Posted March 4, 2020 Super User Posted March 4, 2020 I'm running 4 Chronarch MGL's. 2 I pre-ordered, and the other 2 I bought a month or two after I received the first two. Outside of having DVT service them for me periodically, they have 0 issues. With that being said, I'll definitely be snagging a 20 Met or two. Might even have to sell a Chronarch to afford one. 1 Quote
