Hey @CFDoc, I just bought a JDM 20 met too. While I haven't received it yet I'm already concerned abought the handle knob size. Did you just replace the knobs or the whole handle assembly? Also, with such a small spool should I be concerned with bomb casting 3/8 - 1/2oz chatter baits with so little line on the smaller spool?

Thx.

I got extremely lucky in finding some USDM-sized knobs on another site's swap & sell forum. However, one of my JDM met's still has the smaller knobs on it. I will probably replace them one day though.

As far as spool size and running out of line, my experience has been that with 10, 12, & 15 pound diameter line this has not been a problem. Even with 1/2 oz aerodynamic baits.

With 20lb line and aerodynamic baits, I can absolutely cast down to the last few loops of the spool. This would be with something like 1/2oz tungsten on a speed craw and things like that. Chatter baits I haven't had an issue with it because I find the big blade on chatter baits to flap around on most casts and cause a good bit of aerodynamic drag. I also haven't had the issue with any crank baits I've tried thus far. But I don't do much deep cranking.

Thanks JB, you've been a big help with the handle issue! Just one more question since you brought up the bearings. Can't I simply use the bearings that are coming with the new JDM 20 metanium? Seems like they would be the right size but maybe not.

Sure, they are the same size.  I just can't remember if there are 2 bearings per knob in those or not. I have replaced so many knobs this year that I forget which had 2 bearings and which and a bushing and a bearing.

The met knobs have 2 bearings, both the same size, per knob.

CFDoc, Thank you for the clarification on the bearings. Also, I appreciate the research you did on the spool size vs. line diameter vs casting length. I think I'm going to spool on 40# braid. That should give me plenty of line to work with.

I use 40lb Sufix 832 and throw chatterbaits with mine and it works perfect! You will enjoy it!

I use a leader on one of my t-rig set ups but not on the chatterbait rod. I also have a rod that I use for chatterbaits that has 16 lb sniper on it. I prefer to throw the braid but when I am fishing the wood, I switch to the straight fluoro.

Thank again, JB. I'm going to be pairing the new reel with a Poison Adrena (73MHF) and using it for t-rigs too. That said, I'm also going to hopefully have good luck using it with 3/8-1/2oz chatterbaits and buzzbaits.

oof, you converted your 1-piece rod into a 3-piece. Sorry to see that. I'm sure there's a good backstory to that but probably too painful to relive. Did you like the rod while it was operable?

It was a great rod! My favorite by far. No good story really. I have never caught a 20lb bass but that doesn't prevent me from setting the hook as if each fish I catch is a 20 pounder. Felt the tap, tap and swung away and the rod just blew up. Never seen anything like it in 25 years of fishing. I sent it back to Shimano but I have yet to hear from them which really worries me.

Wow, the best of luck getting a replacement from Shimano. That would be awesome if you could swing that. This will be my first "high-end" rod purchase so I'm hoping I feel the same way you did about your Adrena.

Ok, new reel came in from Japan. It looks great but I notice that when I flick the handle it only turns about 1-1.5 times. I was thinking it should spin 6 or 7 revolutions. Should I be concerned something is binding up in the gearing? This is the Metanium 20 from Japan (JDM model).

I also noticed that regardless of how much I back off on the drag the spool does not loosen in side to side motion.

No, they aren't made to flick, they are made to turn.

It's super smooth when turning. Thanks for your comment regards flicking the handle.

Actually, now that I reviewed a couple youtube videos, I see some folks just casually flicking the handle and it is indeed spinning at least 3-4 revolutions. If I flick mine fairly aggressively it only goes maybe 2 revolutions. Ugh.

Probably just heavily greased.

Also try loosening the cast control knob not the drag if you want a more free spool.

any chance you're willing to part with a usdm spool?

Has anyone swapped gears in their 2020 Metanium yet? I got an 8:1 because one popped up and I jumped on it a while back, but I wanted a 7:1 the whole time. I’m considering buying a set of 7:1 gears and just swapping them out, as well as carbontex washers. I’d also have the pro of having a larger handle on the reel. That’s why I ordered an 8:1 on my Metanium DC as well, because I anticipate to change the gears on it after a few months and the handle on the 6:1 and 7:1 are just too small.

So after some time fishing with this reel, is everyone still stoked about them? Would you recommend them to others? I have a couple Daiwa Tatula's and just ordered the new Scorpion DC. There are good deals on used Shimano 20 Metanium's once in a while and I was wondering if everyone still loved theirs?

I have a few JDM 7:1 and still really love them.  Very comfortable, and have a great "solid feel."  I'm not sure if there's anything to be disappointed in other than I'll probably get a larger handle down the road.  If the price works for you, I think you'll be happy.
