TrillBill Posted February 23, 2020 Posted February 23, 2020 Hey so I’m sure this has been brought up a lot but I’m looking to upgrade my gear starting with 1 rod+reel combo this month and I’ll upgrade more in the summer. I’m looking around the $100 price range for both rod and reel, I’m pretty sold on the SLX for $100 unless anyone has some better suggestions and having trouble deciding between the fury/mojo/Bass x. Currently my best combo is a pro max on a vengeance rod 7’ MH fast and I like those rod specs. I want it to be pretty versatile I fish mostly jigs/ChatterBaits/T.Rigs sometimes a square bill and a couple different top water applications. I’m looking really for sensitivity I want to be able to feel my jig is picked up. If anyone has experience with 2 or more of these rods I would appreciate your insight! I’m willing to go up to $120 on the rod, a store near me has the Mojo for $113 and the fury for $99 I can get the bass X for $99 online. 1 Quote
kayaking_kev Posted February 23, 2020 Posted February 23, 2020 Other good options besides the SLX are the Tatula 100 on sale for $99 right now and a Lew's Tournament MB if you can find a good deal on one or it's replacement a Tournament MP is on sale for $120 at American Fishing Legacy with 10% off if you sign up for their newsletter. The SLX is a good reel, I have the SLX, SLX XT and the SLX DC and so far I'm liking the SLX XT the best due to the SVS Infinity Braking System. I actually have a SLX XT for sale in mint condition for $100 shipped in a 7.2.1 gear ratio right hand with 20# braid spooled on it, because I'm looking to get the 6.3.1 version for cranking. I actually like the my Tournament MB better than my regular SLX though. I have a Tatula 100 coming Monday so I can't speak much on it yet, but I hear good things about them. I'm personally looking into getting a Tatula 150p for deep cranking. As far as rods go, I would personally go with the Fury, but I'm a Dobyns fan. I've had the SLX and Tournament MB on my Fury and both balanced really good with it. The only St.Croix rod I have is a panfish rod, but I've heard that their heavier rods are tip heavy. Quote
Cityangler7 Posted February 23, 2020 Posted February 23, 2020 I would do the Fury , I have a 703 which I use for heavy blades and 1/2 oz jigs, I find its a great value for the money. Quote
swhit140 Posted February 24, 2020 Posted February 24, 2020 I can tell you that the Bass X is no bueno I handled one in hand and it is very tip heavy. I would suggest anything but the Bass X. I have 10-15 year old rods that feel better in hand than the Bass X. Quote
DanielG Posted February 24, 2020 Posted February 24, 2020 I've had the fury for awhile and it's pretty good for the $. It's a spinning rod though. Another note, and a totally different rod and price range. I've got Dobyn's champion 735c glass in MHF. I keep using it over all the others. I don't have tons of rod experiences but right now this one has me. 1 Quote

Dobyns isn’t light either but better balanced IMO. Tatula XT is another good option as well as Ark Tharp rods. 3 Quote
LonnieP Posted February 24, 2020 Posted February 24, 2020 If you look around you should be able to find a Diawa Tatula rod on sale that is in your price range. They're a lot lighter and sensitive than the rods you mentioned. Quote
FishinBuck07 Posted February 24, 2020 Posted February 24, 2020 You can do it with the Fury 703c, but for most of what you are wanting to throw I would go with the 734C like TBAG above said! I have both and would rather throw most of what you are talking about on the 734. I am using the 703C for my squarebills though. 2 Quote
browne762 Posted February 24, 2020 Posted February 24, 2020 I have used both the Bass X and the Mojo Bass and both are fine in my opinion. I would get the Mojo between the two because of the higher grade of graphite and the fit and finish are improved. 2 Quote
Super User Spankey Posted February 24, 2020 Super User Posted February 24, 2020 Guys over the last few years Mother Nature has upset the smallie fishing on my life long home on the river. I guess it will come back around. Things heal themselves. But I have to continue to fish, I had to move on. My new home is a lake these days and that has opened new doors for me. Frogging, pitchen and flipping, along with deeper crankbait fishing. My frog, pitch and flip fishing has a long way to come but I'm using a Bass X 7'1" MH F w/ a BPS Pro Qualifier 7.5:1 reel. trying to do it all with this one set up for right now. It balances pretty well and if it is weight forward it is only slightly. For deeper crankbait fishing I'm using a 7' MH Mod. Fast Fury 705cb with a Lew's LFS. That was a great rod purchase and would come highly recommended. I need to be at 13-20 feet deep at times. A lot of the cranks are 5/8 oz. plus. I'm pretty new to that slop and heavy cover fishing but was kicking the idea of another Bass X 7'2" or 7'4" mod./mod. fast. Just for the purpose of frogs. I'm not trying to be cheap maybe just practical for right now. Quote

Super User Boomstick Posted February 25, 2020 Super User Posted February 25, 2020 I would probably skip the Bass X and go straight to the Mojo Bass if paying full retail, but if you can get a Mojo Bass for $113 then I would say the Bass X should be out of the quest. While I have no experience with a Fury 704C, I bought my son a Sierra 704C for his birthday a couple years ago and it's an absolutely fantastic rod for T-Rigs and jigs up to 1/2oz. My other son has a Mojo Bass Jig and Bait rod (7'1" MH/F) and that's also a nice rod. Some people complain it's a little tip heavy but to be honest, I don't think it's so much tip heavy as it just is super, super light. If you go the Dobyns route, the 703C would be a nice addition in the future that would compliment the 704C nicely for weightless soft plastics and treble hooked lures. It has less backbone and a more moderate fast tip, at least the Sierra does. I can't think of a rod in the Mojo Bass lineup that makes such a perfect compliment, maybe the 6'8" M/XF topwater rod would not be a bad option -- I have that rod and it's fantastic for poppers although it's more tip and less backbone than the 703C. For a reel, you can get a Daiwa Tatula CT on ebay around $90. The Daiwa reels will brake better than the more expensive Shimano Curado but the Shimano will cast further and I would expect the SLX to be about the same, so I would weigh that in with what you plan to be using it for. 1 Quote
