Super User N Florida Mike Posted February 22, 2020 Super User Posted February 22, 2020 I know we discussed this awhile back, but does anyone understand the structure of MLF? I mean they have all these different “ rounds” and I can’t figure out if someone loses a round are they out for good or do they get to fish later again etc. There are rankings too, how does that matter? Obviously there are differences in rounds like “ sudden death “ etc. I need help to understand the format of it all. Another thing is they show reruns and that throws another curve into it all .Seems like a hot mess to me... I follow certain anglers and would like to know when they’ll be on again, for example I follow Terry Scroggins. He took 6th in the sudden death round last week. When does he fish again ? Kind of like rooting for your team in the playoffs but you aren’t sure when they play again. maybe it’s just me...? 3 Quote
Global Moderator TnRiver46 Posted February 22, 2020 Global Moderator Posted February 22, 2020 well you wanna be in the top 20 in the first two days. Then they take those top 20 from (group a and group b) And fish another round? It takes like a full week. None of them air live except online, the tv coverage is weeks/months after the fact. Also if you are critical of MLF, they will find you......... insert Liam neeson meme....... 1 Quote
wisconsin heat Posted February 22, 2020 Posted February 22, 2020 It's not just you. I too am confused by their format. I remember tuning in to one for the first time and there's this "shotgun round," and "elimination round" and "knockout round" or whatever. And idk, it seemed like the rules changed, and they were like fishing different sections of the lake at times? It was all very confusing and not straight forward at all. All the different rounds seem unnecessary and extra. Pair that with the fact that basically all the anglers are throwing ned rigs or small baits at the bank for 1 pounders made the show practically unwatchable. I was under the impression that they weren't allowed to practice, and since they aren't necessarily incentivised to find or catch bigger fish- they usually don't. Don't even get me started on the event names too. We got like qualifying events? And challenge cups? And others, basically if one of these episodes shows up on my TV I have absolutely no idea what I am watching. 1 1 Quote

RichF Posted February 22, 2020 Posted February 22, 2020 Took me a bit to figure out myself! The top angler from the shotgun rounds moving straight to the champ round is new this year. Definitely a lot of new rules. Quote
Super User N Florida Mike Posted February 22, 2020 Author Super User Posted February 22, 2020 But what about knockout rounds, challenge cups, rankings? Wish I could see it in a bracket or spread sheet with all the names and where it’s at in the season. Who’s out, who’s still in , how it looks going forward. Maybe it’s too much to ask. MLF is kind of a love- hate relationship to me. I enjoy the anticipation of watching it, but by round 2 , I’m usually dozing off or switched the channel to gunsmoke reruns or another outdoor show. ( Or actually go fishing) ! Last week was an exception as I was rooting for Terry Scroggins, a Florida angler, who made a last minute comeback to take 6th place (to qualify him for the next round) and edge out Mike Iaconelli, who , lets put it nicely, is not my favorite. Tlauz Posted February 22, 2020 Posted February 22, 2020 Go to Major League Fishing website. Click the link on top (MLF 101). It gives a really good description of events along with graphs to make it easier to understand. Remember the BPT and MLF events are not the same. You can live stream the BPT events and watch them as they are happening. The MLF cup events are taped and played at a later date. Quote
BassNJake Posted February 22, 2020 Posted February 22, 2020 Some of the people are talking about MLF and some people are talking about BPT. Another thing that confuses people is that the old version of MLF was its own thing. No practice, just show up and fish where they took you. At this time to qualify for the cup events, you fished the selects. Now you qualify for the cups thru BPT. The BPT allows you to practice but not share information with other competitors So I believe @N Florida Mike is talking about MLF cups they are showing on the outdoor channel. I have heard this referred to as a clusterf@$! Quote

My cousin Nikki lives in rockledge and I’ve fished with her boyfriend some. He fished some St. John’s and toho events and got paired with “big show” scroggins a few times. Always had great stories and only positive things to say Quote
Super User N Florida Mike Posted February 22, 2020 Author Super User Posted February 22, 2020 I just don’t like all the yelling and every fish is “ big” and then it’s 1 pound 8 oz.with Ike. He’s a great fisherman and success story though- Happy he’s been successful. Yeah Id like to meet Scroggins and Shaw Grigsby. I went to the Rules section on the MLF website. It explains the format very well on there. Thanks for all the input everyone. 2 Quote

Super User N Florida Mike Posted February 22, 2020 Author Super User Posted February 22, 2020 I have met Peter Thliveros. I don’t know if he fishes tournaments anymore. He used to own a restaurant near me with a bass fishing theme. He would stop and talk fishing even though obviously busy. Never seemed to be in a hurry... 1 Quote

I think it happens like that so much because of the every fish counts format. Once you stumble across that big school, it's over. Quote

Duane Anderson Posted April 16, 2022 Posted April 16, 2022 As near as I can tell, there are four types of MLF tournaments. You have the Cup events, the Heavy Hitters events (my favorite), the Stage Events and the Tackle Warehouse Pro Circuit. And it seems that the same pros compete in them all. My biggest complaint is when MLF schedules tournaments on lakes where you spend your two hours watching them catch one pounders. A two pounder is a big fish. That’s why the Heavy Hitter tournaments are my favorites and I’m sure the favorite of the pros as well. Quote
