Hi folks,

What is your favorite treble hook to replace stock hooks with? Do you vary it or have a specific brand?

I'm just gauging preferences before I look into getting some for spring! Went through tackle to sharpen and take stock and it looks like replacement will be best on a few of these lures ??.... mangled in the best way!

Check out this video from Tackle Advisors:

Based on that video, I got some #4 & #6 needle points from wlureshop on Ebay.

Most of my crankbait hooks are #4 or #6 hook size. I've used those hooks in his video, they were decent but they weren't amazing either. If you plan to buy them on ebay count on waiting a month. I've ordered online from KDS Sporting Goods for my treble hooks and have been happy with their service. They have Eagle Claw & Mustad Trebles. I ordered mine in quantity of 100 and replaced hooks on lower priced treble hook baits.

I left a link below to their site on the treble hooks.

Stock Treble hooks – I change them.  All my topwater, jerk, rattle, square & crankbaits, even blade baits & spybaits all get aftermarket trebles.  And topwater baits that have feathers, also get changed out, I just tie up my own.  (So easy, even an A-Jay can do it)

Mustad KVD 1x Strong 2x Short Triple Grip Treble Hook, Gamakatsu EWG Treble Short Shank Magic Eye and Owner Short Shank Treble Hook ST-35 all adorn my baits.  Especially like that Owner ST-35 (Not for a tail hook though) as it features 150-degree Premium Point Position design, which splits two hook points out 150-degrees versus the typical 120-degrees between all three points. This allows the hook points to be positioned slightly farther out from your bait and help increase your hook up percentage. Opening the gap to 150-degrees also minimizes damage to your bait from the hook points, while keeping the hook points sharper over time as well.

Note: Owner Stinger ST-35 Short Shank Treble Hooks are designed to be used with baits that have the hook hanger in line with the length of the bait.  These will not hang correctly on lures that feature any hook hanger that is perpendicular to the length of the lure – some of the offerings from Megabass for instance.  Had to include that because as great as these trebles are – they do not work in the situation described.

Any & all questionable split rings are traded out for Owner Hyper wires. (including Line ties)

Except for a couple of new cranks/square bills. Last year I started changing over all of my stock hooks on my cranks/square bills to Mustad kvd 2x short 1x strong ewg hooks in the appropriate sizes.  I did by some VMC 1x short on 1x strong 9651 bn to try as they are much cheaper than the KVD’s.  My smaller floating rapala’s 5-8 I am  using size 10-8 regular length owner St-36’s.

I have noticed a definite noticeable hook up increase with using better hooks.  I no longer have bent hooks either. However, I don’t think it really matters what brand of hook you use as long as it is a premium hook. .

I don't replace trebles unless they really need them - most of my treble-lures are Rapala which come with VMC hooks anyway (Rapala owns VMC, so it's a no-brainer).

When I do need replacements, Owner ST-36.

Be honest, you have this saved somewhere so you can just paste it here when the topic of treble hooks comes up, don't you? :)

Any Rapala or Strike King KVD bait i buy, gets them junky vmc hooks taken off and tossed.

Mustad 1x2x, or Owner ZoeWire are my choice. The stock vmc will bend on you eventually.

They're just so light... even by my finesse standards. Hook into any river Smallie worth it's own in current here and it's gonna bend.
