Pprice01 Posted February 18, 2020 Posted February 18, 2020 Hi all, looking for recommendations for a new casting rod for skipping and pitching jigs and T rigs. Im looking at: Shimano Poison Shimano Expride Dobyns Champion Extreme Edge Black Widow I also looked at the Fitzgerald Bryan Thrift model but ruled it out bud to micro guides and my use of braid/leader. But I’m also open to suggestions and any experience you have with these rods or others. Thanks! Quote
Super User FryDog62 Posted February 19, 2020 Super User Posted February 19, 2020 Is there a length/power you prefer? Another option to consider is ALX Zolo Skipper at 6’9” MH Fast. Or, Tatula Elite makes a skipping rod in both 6’9” Heavy and 7’1” Heavy. Quote

I have the ALX Toadface and like it a lot for frogs and walking baits. Would be open to another ALX certainly. Quote
Super User Fishes in trees Posted February 19, 2020 Super User Posted February 19, 2020 If you're going to take up skipping with your bait caster, be sure to buy yourself lots of spare line when you get your new rod. I don't know about you, but I can throw close to cover, very close to cover, but when I try to skip into cover, that is just asking for it, and I backlash alot. For those times when I feel like I got to throw into and underneath stuff, (like dock fishing at Lake Ozark and other lakes with lots of docks) I carry a spinning rod with a braid/leader combo for that application. I've just gotten tired of buying line. I have a Curado DC, which is supposed to be just the ticket for skipping with a bait caster, but I'm still not very good at it. My advice is to go spinning. The gear is just as sensitive, drag on the reel is just as good as a bait caster and I have much fewer line issues. 2 Quote

This pitch skip is a whole new level. My number 1 goal for this year! Can't wait for my Tatula SV TW to get here and to finally have some open water. Quote

I can skip a spinning setup with forhand and backhand casts, and I have the Steez with the sv spool, so I can use that. I also have the Curado DC and I ordered the new 2020 Metanium Which should ship next week. That sounds terrible but I will likely be switching up setups once I determine which rod to go with. Quote

Ha I’m well on my way to doing the same. I picked up the Steez CT SV for skipping this year. I’ve been able to skip my Chatterbait with my BPS Carbonlite combo and my Lews Combos but I’m pretty confident the Steez is going to change the game. I’m hoping the new Tatula SV TW will allow me to do the same with jigs. I’m considering pairing the Tatula SV with an Argon from Kistler. I haven’t heard much but the price point is great right now and those blanks are nice from what I hear. Maybe a 6’9” to give me a little more control. Quote
