Super User jimmyjoe Posted February 17, 2020 Super User Posted February 17, 2020 For twitchbaits, I've always used Bomber Long A lures. However, on the pause they will rise. I really don't like using suspendots, because sometimes I don't get them quite right. Rapala has the X-Rap Subwalk, which is supposed to sink, not rise. It MIGHT be just what I'm looking for. So I'm asking some questions: 1) Is it durable? Some places I fish for bass also have pike. 2) How fast does it sink in cold water? 3) Does it seem to be as productive (in general) as the regular X-Rap? 4) Is it stable on a hard twitch, or does it easily upset or turn over? Thnx for your help. jj 1 1 Quote
Super User scaleface Posted February 17, 2020 Super User Posted February 17, 2020 Bomber use to make a suspending Long A . I have a KVD signature one . 2 Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted February 17, 2020 Super User Posted February 17, 2020 The Sub-Walk has been one of my shallow water secret weapons for going on 10 years. It's a Killer bait that no one throws. I'll fish it exactly like a suspending jerkbait except I can fish it effectively in less than 3 feet of water; BUT not on top. Often times bass may not want to commit to a topwater bait; but that's when this bait shines. I Highly Recommended it. Don't tell anyone. A-Jay 9 3 Quote

It's a hard plastic bait that is pretty tough. I change the hooks and hardware. Pike will smash these especially early and late season. I often use wire. These are great shallow water search baits. Also, these baits do require a decent degree of user input to get the action out of them. However after the bait is twitched and then stops, it has a very unique and subtle 'roll' before suspending motionless. Brown bass Hate It - in a good way. The posted pic includes older and newer baits. And I can definitely see why one would question my credibility....... A-Jay 4 1 1 Quote

Spoons are the same way; they are what you make of them. Thank you v. much! jj 1 Quote

Also, this bait is different in that regardless of how long it sits it will only get 18 to perhaps 24 inch down max. A-Jay 2 Quote
waymont Posted February 18, 2020 Posted February 18, 2020 Sub walk is a favorite of mine too. It’s a unique bait that stays pretty close to the surface, but doesn’t want to crack the surface. 2 Quote

Are those the XRSB09's (5/8oz) or the XRSB15's (2oz)? What are you throwing those on? Quote

Ogandrews Posted February 19, 2020 Posted February 19, 2020 It’s funny how in bass fishing this is seen as a unique lure but glide baits like this are one of the most popular musky baits around, as well as lots of people using stuff like this in saltwater. I have caught fish on the sub walk but I have spent way more time throwing phantom softail gliders. The sub walk has a good action although I don’t think the small size is as good as the bigger one action wise. I use phantoms almost exclusively when I’m throwing glide baits, I think having that twister tail at the back helps a lot and phantoms have a waaay better action and a great a shimmy on the fall. Try out the 4” softail i have caught some great smallies on them, as well as some of the biggest pike of my life. One thing that helps with any glider is to work it on a slack line. When you pop the bait, the harder you hit it and the more slack in your line the farther it will travel from side to side so you have a huge amount of control over the action of the bait 3 Quote

The difference is that the cadence with spoons is much faster and the recovery is short because the spoon sinks fast. Some very thin spoons, such as 1/4 oz Dardevle Trout Weight and the Flutterchucks, can be worked much slower because they sink slower. There's nothing quite like doing a walk-n'-flutter with a Flutterchuck in somewhat clear water, and seeing a fish slowly rising to finally hit the lure. It's almost like the anticipation in a horror movie when you know there's a slasher in the room, but you just .... gotta .... wait ... forrrrrr .... itBAM! I love fishing! ? jj 2 Quote
Crankin4Bass Posted February 19, 2020 Posted February 19, 2020 I found they also have some smaller 7/16 oz saltwater ones with inline single hooks. The bait monkey made me place another order. ? Quote

Since those are saltwater lures and saltwater has a different density from fresh water, do you think those might behave differently than what you're anticipating or no? jj 1 Quote

I changed out the hardware. Baits seem to run the same however the new model has yet to produce. It will though, eventually. A-Jay 1 Quote

Hook2Jaw Posted February 20, 2020 Posted February 20, 2020 Whatchu throwing these on, @A-Jay? I'm guessing a Medium Heavy stick, but I've always found them interesting and I think spotted bass as well as stripers on my beloved Juliette will annihilate them. Quote

Usually whatever I throw full sized topwater on.(Walkers & Poppers) The hooks on these are #2's, so next size up from a jerkbait which on my baits are #4's. Either way, always braid mainline & a mono leader and LOOOONG Casts. When fish are up in skinny water, I can sit well off them and send this unit right to their face.
