Megastink Posted February 12, 2020 Posted February 12, 2020 I make my own spinnerbaits. I made a few 3/8oz with a matte orange color add blade (#2.5 or 3 I think) and a #4 or 4.5 main Colorado blade. My problem is that the orange kicker blade isn’t spinning. The main blade is spinning while the smaller kicker blade just flops around. Any idea what’s happening? Quote
Super User Jig Man Posted February 12, 2020 Super User Posted February 12, 2020 When that happens to me I have usually forgotten the spacer, a bead or put the blade on backwards. Quote
cadman Posted February 12, 2020 Posted February 12, 2020 Post a pic of your assembly(ies) so we can diagnose your problem. Like Jig Man mentioned, or maybe too small of a clevis or burrs on the clevis and or beads if they are metal. Also the second blade does not actually spin since it is on a clevis and not on a ball bearing. It will only spin on the initial cast when it drops thru the water column. When you retrieve the spinnerbait, the secondary blade wobbles on the clevis. Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted February 12, 2020 Super User Posted February 12, 2020 I'm not familiar with ever seeing a size 2.5 Colorado blade so it is probably a 2 or a 3. You make your own baits already so I'm going to assume the blade is on the clevis correctly which is the cupped or underside facing up toward the blade on the swivel. I'm also going to guess in that with a 3/8oz size bait you are running at least .032" - .035" diameter wire so you are using a size #2 or #3 clevis. If you are using a size 2 Colorado blade the problem is the blade is too small to spin the clevis, it happens with size 3 willow blades and a size 3 clevis, the blade doesn't catch enough water unless you retrieve it at warp speed. Another issue could be clevis and wire, if you are using a size 2 clevis on .035" wire even a larger size 3 blade won't spin freely because the hole diameter for the clevis is .035". At slow speeds it will bind and stick which will make it sort of just flail around. It is hard to diagnose without a little more info and if you are buying the heads already made instead of molding them it is very important to know the wire diameter so you can get the right components, .030" to .032" diameter wire gets a size 2 clevis and .035" up to .041" diameter wire gets a size 3 clevis. 2 Quote
Michigander Posted February 14, 2020 Posted February 14, 2020 Wish there was a flow chart for making spinnerbaits. I have made several ones that were pretty to look at but worked very poorly in the lake. 1 Quote
Megastink Posted February 19, 2020 Author Posted February 19, 2020 @Smalljaw @cadman I think it might be the blades. I took a KVD finesse spinnerbait (tandem), replaced the #2 Colorado with One of my #3 red kicker blades, and it won’t spin. I’ll post a photo for reference, but I think the blades I bought just suck. Megastink Posted February 19, 2020 Author Posted February 19, 2020 The blade does have an odd shape to it. Maybe causing some extra drag? Quote

They are all this way. I’ve used these blades on several spinnerbaits and the results are the same. @smalljaw67, could you recommend a brand/source of painted blades in this color? I believe these were cabelas brand. Never again... Quote

Never again... Unfortunately you are going to have to pay shipping to get a better blade. Cabela's and Bass Pro both sell the same stuff, the Bas Pro XPS blades are good but they only come in gold and nickel. LPO has nice painted blades but they aren't cheap, these are the blades I use when I was using painted blades. https://www.lurepartsonline.com/Premium-Painted-Colorado-Blades Quote
