Michigander Posted February 11, 2020 Posted February 11, 2020 Stop snickering! Ok, so hypothetically you have a sizable budget to build a "perfect" new custom rod. What would you build, with what components, and why? Quote

Michigander Posted February 12, 2020 Author Posted February 12, 2020 Well those look great, wish I knew what was on them! Quote

Those are great looking rods, what specs exactly are you curious about? Blank specs or parts specs? I'm only asking because those parts shouldn't be hard to track down. I've been to a couple of seminars where Mark Pack was speaking and talked to him a couple of times, he seems like a great guy and a heck of a fisherman. Didn't know he built rods too. Quote

Agree that some of it is easy to source, like carbon fiber grips & the reel seat. But I have never seen a carbon fiber reel seat lock/foregrip. I am sure they are available somewhere. I am also intrigued by the carbon fiber over the hook keeper. I would like to learn how to do that as well. Blanks are always a matter of personal choice but based on what I see, I am sure the rest was top shelf components as well. Quote
Michigander Posted February 12, 2020 Author Posted February 12, 2020 I don't know Jack about components, I'm just here to see what amazing things people come up with if they didn't have to see the receipt. 1 Quote

You should check out VooDoo rods . com and look at their Matagi parts. Matagi is a Japanese company that makes high end rod building components, they have a lot of really cool stuff. Mudhole also sells some cool carbon fiber stuff, including reel seat nuts. Anyway, really nice rods. There are some really talented builders out there doing great work. Quote

Although the hood looks longer than usual. https://voodoorods.com/products/matagi-reel-seat-hood-combo The carbon sleeve might be in the Matagi catalog. 1 Quote

Delaware Valley Tackle Posted February 12, 2020 Posted February 12, 2020 The seat looks like an Alps mtv painted and I think those are Alps carbon grips. Look up the Kigan hook keeper. Quote

It looks like the hook keeper is wrapped right at the transition where CF sleeve ends. The CF appearance in front of the keeper is the blank itself. Quote

What I would like is to be able to acquire NRX blanks so I could see what the hype is all about. Then I'd be able to build it right. Good fit & finish and proper guide layout. . but that'll never happen and I'm not about to overpay for a rod just to strip it down and rebuild. With what is available on the market right now, I'd build another 5S610MLXF. To me, that is the perfect dropshot rod. I actually have one of those in my rack to be built this year. Fuji Ti/Torzite guides, because I bought them a couple years ago. Otherwise I'd be using Fuji T2 guides. They're just so sexy. Kigan XLA hook keeper. Undecided on the grip/seat. I'm hung up on split Tennessee with slide rings for my dropshot rods. I may try a Fuji TVS if I like how the SCV Inshore I'm building for a customer turns out. I ordered an extra one just in case!
