Grim_Reaver Posted February 11, 2020 Posted February 11, 2020 I am now 100% convinced that the reel is where more money should be spent. This tired argument can now be laid to rest in my mind. Peace and tranquility forever. 1 Quote

Mbirdsley Posted February 11, 2020 Posted February 11, 2020 It depends totally on what your doing. If your cranking Or fishing any moving bait the rod dosent means nearly as much as long as it is a slower action. You need a good slower retrieve reel with a good drag to keep the lure in the strike zone and not rip a treble out of fished mouth. The more feel and finesse you get into the rod imho means way way more. You can’t reel a fish in in if you can’t feel it Pick that jig off the bottom. At that point your just using the reel to bring in excess line and retrieving the fish. great example is salmon trolling. All you really need and all most guys including charter guys use is a $10 for trolling. You spend the big money sometimes $100+ on reel so when that salmon goes on bone jarring run it dosent disembowel your 10 reel. Quote
Grim_Reaver Posted February 11, 2020 Author Posted February 11, 2020 After months submerged in saltwater, the rod was trashed and the reel is still kicking. Further emphasizes my opinion that a quality reel will outlast a rod. If you really have to ask, I don't know how to help you. Mbirdsley, I can see what you're saying but I've never had a problem feeling bites with cheaper rods ($50-80). A bite is a bite for me. Quote
garroyo130 Posted February 11, 2020 Posted February 11, 2020 Im not really into throwing rods or reels into saltwater but to each their own 1 Quote

Chris just happened to luck out on finding an abandoned set up that was probably lost in an accident. There are lots of what ifs and what not but I know for a fact that most of my reels last longer than the rods they get put on. Quote
