Super User GreenPig Posted February 12, 2020 Super User Posted February 12, 2020 Arrived at the boat ramp early one morning to do a bit of dock talk with the 20 - 30 tournament fellas I know. Had all my gear laying in the bed of the truck waiting on my bud with his boat. Thirty minutes or so later here comes my fishing partner with no boat in tow. He had apparently thought we were fishing in my boat. We still haven't lived that incident down. I'm very thankful we weren't fishing in the tournament. 6 Quote
Jaderose Posted February 13, 2020 Posted February 13, 2020 Few years ago I had 3 new custom bucktail jigs with me and wanted to give them a shot. I tie on first one and cast it only to watch it fly away due to a poor tie..( I guess? I have no idea why, actually). I tie on 2nd one and throw straight into a tree. Way up there. Couldn't get down. Still there mocking me to this day. Well....heck....tie on THIRD one. Cut mainline instead of tag and throw it over the side. 3 new jigs. Not one successful cast. All 3 gone in less than 10 minutes. 1 3 Quote

Way north bass guy Posted February 14, 2020 Posted February 14, 2020 Wasn’t really embarrassing for me as much as just a funny moment. When I used to guide on Georgian Bay for lake trout and salmon mainly, I had the privilege of being used in the filming of a fishing show once. Show was called “Full Contact Fishing”, hosted by Chris King, a former NHLer. He mostly took out other hockey players, and sports figures, and for my day we it was me, him, the cameraman and #88, Eric Lindros. It was a fantastic morning, we filmed the entire 1/2 hour show in only 2 hours, the fishing was so good, with multiple double headers. At one point, a fish hooked up, so I handed the rod to Chris at the stern to fight it, and hustled to the bow to get out of the way of the cameraman, as well as get the net. Eric was lounging on the front deck in the sun, and in my way by I tripped on the camera case and laid a full on body check right into Eric. Of course, me being 165lbs soaking wet and he being a 200+lb NHL superstar, there wasn’t much damage done ?. But the whole thing was caught on camera and the guys even put it in the show. You can even look it up on YouTube, my one and only check on a real hockey player! I do play hockey all year, but it’s mostly old guys with no contact. 3 5 Quote
Logan S Posted February 14, 2020 Posted February 14, 2020 When I was 17 I went on the first of many annual trips to a chain of lakes in Canada with a group of guys from my club. It was my first big, long distance fishing trip. The day we were leaving I was really hyped up to go, hooked the boat up early and basically paced around till it was time to go (we were leaving mid-afternoon). I loaded up my truck and tinkered with some tackle in the boat for a while until I just decided head to the meeting spot early....Guys were always early. So I do that and then get to the meeting spot and no one is there yet, but whatever I'm a little extra early.... It gets to the actual meeting time and still no one there so I call the guy that lived closest to the meeting spot to ask where everyone was....And he says, "What are you talking about? It's Friday, we leave tomorrow....." Yep, I was an entire day early ?. As a teenager trying to be 'cool' in a group of more experienced fisherman, it was pretty embarrassing - Though they were good sports about it, giving me just enough flak to stay funny. It's been 16 or 17 years now since that screw up and if I'm ever the first guy to the ramp in the morning one of those guys will still hit me with, "You've been here since yesterday haven't you?" Or something similar ?. 2 3 Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted February 14, 2020 Super User Posted February 14, 2020 This has become a bit more of a concern for me than I'd like to admit. Most travel rods just don't hold up. This was the third one in two days And this one wasn't even mine . . . . . . A-Jay 3 Quote

Super User the reel ess Posted February 14, 2020 Super User Posted February 14, 2020 I've relayed this one before, but it applies. It still makes me feel quite stupid. Boat would not start when my dad and I got ready to leave a spot. We looked the usual connections over and couldn't find anything. We got a tow back to the ramp and I took it home where I looked it over many times and was just about to take it to a mechanic. My dad called me out of the blue and told me to go check the kill switch. That was it. I didn't use the boat for 6 months or more. I wasn't wearing the kill switch so I don't know how it happened and that's why it didn't occur to me. It's the old mechanic's adage "Start with the simplest, cheapest fix, not the most expensive". My dad thought something was wrong with the outboard on his pontoon once. It wouldn't get up on plane all day. Finally figured out he was dragging a 20 lb. anchor. 1 Quote

Super User PhishLI Posted February 14, 2020 Super User Posted February 14, 2020 This didn't happen while fishing, but it's fishing related. I'm full swing to the 10th power into bass fishing again, but I took a looong break from it. Many years. The first time I met my soon to be son in law at a family BBQ he brought up that he loves bass fishing. I was instantly stoked. He couldn't shut me up. I was serious as a kid and still had all of my old gear safely stashed away because I always knew the day would come again. When I say old I mean Daiwa spinners from the late 70s. He offered to take me out on his boat to his honey hole the following weekend, but I had to decline. In that moment I made up my mind that I was going to fish with the exact setup I caught my last fish on before I stopped. I was on a mission. This meant a tear down and lube on my old Daiwa 1000C reel and a new guide on the 5'10" M Ugly Stik. That took a few weeks to get to. When the gear was ready I was was pumped. I ran up to a local spot with it for some practice. Everything was just as I remembered it. Muscle memory kicked in instantly and it was like I'd never stopped. Old timers might remember that the Daiwa 1000C had a clicking anti reverse when it was engaged. Every crank of the handle and the reel was clicking away like a baseball card in bicycle spokes. Perfectly normal back in the day and just perfectly fine as far as I knew at that moment. I scheduled an outing with my son in law for the following weekend, but I decided that I needed another setup at the 11th hour. I ran up to a shop and grabbed another rod and a ABU Card10 spinner and more line. When i got home I ran in, mounted the reel on the rod and proceeded to spool it up. Weeeeee! But there was a problem. It didn't click when I wound it! It's busted! They sold me junk! I have to drive back there! I'm gonna be late! Doh! I pulled up to the place and I'm unhappy but I'm composed. I just want to get a replacement that isn't broken and be on my way. So I wait on line. When it's my turn I hand over the reel and explain that it's defective. The two guys behind the counter examine the reel then tell me that it's perfectly fine. My blood pressure rises instantly! Then I say, in my angry guy not trying to seem angry voice " Then why isn't it clicking when I crank it?" The two guys behind the counter briefly looked at each other, then turned and stared at me in amazement. One of them turned out to be the owner. He was nice about it. He asked me how long it was since I'd last fished, so I told him. He went on to explain that things had changed since then and reels now have something called "silent anti reverse". I felt that odd cold feeling come over me. I turned around to steal a glance at the people in line behind me. Each pair of eyes met mine in unison. One guy looked down and slightly shook his head. So there I was. I was "That Guy". I apologized and bolted outta there with my perfectly fine new reel. Once I got in my truck I laughed hysterically at what a fool I am. Oh brother... 1 3 Quote
Junk Fisherman Posted February 14, 2020 Posted February 14, 2020 In my haste, I didn't securely tie my boat to the dock after launching. It was a good 20' away when I returned after parking. Thankfully, it was the summer so I stripped down to my undies and went for a swim. I also fell out of my boat once. We were fishing a marina and just had gone under a catwalk. In a rush to get the first cast, I did not put my butt seat back in. When I leaned back, I stumbled and fell out. Once again, it was the summer so I just kept fishing. 1 3 Quote

TriStateBassin106 Posted February 15, 2020 Posted February 15, 2020 1. Getting a backlash while teaching someone how to use a baitcaster. 2. Dropping your rods by accident while walking. 3. Fishing a public park pond and accidentally hitting some innocent kid watching you fish with your jig while trying to cast. (True story) 4. Slipping on Mud near the bank. 5. Hooking a snapping turtle and having 5+ people surround you watching. 1 Quote
Hillbilly Bennett Posted February 15, 2020 Posted February 15, 2020 In my teenage days I would Take my dad’s boat to go fish my local lake when he had to work and couldn’t go with me. He has always been super meticulous and incredibly OCD about cleaning his rig. On this particular day he had washed and waxed the bottom of the fiberglass hull and decided that it would be a good idea to take the bunk rails off of the trailer one at a time and wax the parts of the hull that sat on the rails. Fast forward to the ramp, I’ve unhooked the boat from the trailer and I’m backing down the incline to in the water when the boat suddenly breaks loose and starts sliding down the trailer a good 20 yards from the water. I gunned the truck in an effort to keep the boat from landing right in the middle of the ramp. I managed to launch it doing about 30 mph in reverse and only scraped about a 6 inch section on the front of the hull on the ramp but water swamped the back of the boat and the speed at which I hit the water sent the boat about 50 yards from the ramp. Luckily it was summer and I was able to swim out and climb in the boat. Dad wasn’t happy with my explanation of what happened until he went fishing the next day and did the same exact thing. Needless to say he never waxed the hull that well again. 1 4 Quote
schplurg Posted February 15, 2020 Posted February 15, 2020 All I can think of in my short fishing career is leaving both of my rods at my fishing spot last summer. I walked back to my truck without them. I guess I was too impressed with the sunset. I jogged past two guys and breathlessly asked them not to pick up the grey backpack "in the tree back there" that I stashed so I could run. They're like, "huh?" Had to run all the way back before it got dark and the mountain lions came out to play. I once cast in front of someone I was trying to impress - a girl. I tied on a spinner bait and my knot failed or something and that sucker flew out into the lake. "I meant to do that." Good long cast without all that silly fishing line to slow it down! I've fallen down too many times to count. It's good for a laugh in my videos. Quote

The trout were slamming it...and I kept losing them. I lost at least 15...a few times they would hit it, I would continue reeling and they would hit it again. Frustrated, I snipped it off and grabbed it...I noticed I didnt feel any hooks and looked at it. It didnt have one. It had a split ring but no hook. I put a hook on but the feeding frenzy had died down and I only caught one. 2nd - About 15 years ago I bought a new spinner bait and it had long skirt that covered the hook, which seemed pretty cool to me at the time. I consider myself a pretty good spinnerbait fisherman and have great confidence with them. I was fishing with a friend and we were throwing around pads and thick stuff. My second cast I had a huge hit and tried to set the hook and it came flying out of its mouth and smacked the side of the aluminum boat. I figured the bass must have engulfed the blades. A few casts later and I missed another one. Over the next 30 minutes or so I missed 5 more as my frustration level and use of creative metaphors increased. I wasn't using a trailer hook because of the thick vegetation but decided I needed to anyway...reached into the tackle bag and grabbed one. As I went to put it on the hook i discovered the hook had a clear plastic tube covering the hook point. My friend never let me live that down. Mine's similar to #1. I few years back my family took a vacation to the Yellowstone area and I was pumped to fly fish for trout. I really wanted to catch some big brown trout but where we stayed the first few days I only caught a rainbow and a couple cutties. For the last night of the trip we stayed at cabin in Wyoming really close to the Snake River. I only got a couple hours of fishing in before dark but I kept getting bites. Like I'd get big fish after big fish to slurp my dry fly, I'd set the hook, fight it for 5-10 seconds, and they'd always get off. I fished until almost pitch black and felt defeated. As I went to secure my fly to the hook keeper I realized the hook was broke right in the middle of the bend... I must've snapped it off on the rocks during one of my back-casts. Have yet to get over that one. Quote
Tracker22 Posted February 16, 2020 Posted February 16, 2020 I went with a buddy on his “new” used boat. I backed it down the ramp and when I pulled up, the front of the trailer went with the truck while the back half stayed in the water. The only things holding his trailer together were the straps on his boat. 4 Quote
