Cam Steele Posted February 9, 2020 Posted February 9, 2020 Hello Everyone, I have a Daiwa TWS, SV and it's been getting under my skin. I've been casting in my backyard to hone my skills and I've noticed an intermittent issue. 50 percent of my casts my reel emits a strange grinding sound. Almost like a jet taking off or static on an old TV. During these strange bouts of ungodly sounds, my lure seems to travel less far and the spool itself feels less smooth. I also seem to have a higher chance of backlash during this period. The other 50 percent of casts the reel feels smooth and my lure goes much father. I've been fishing for years but this baitcaster is making me feel like a beginner. Thoughts? Thanks, Cam Quote

Super User jimmyjoe Posted February 9, 2020 Super User Posted February 9, 2020 It might be that your pinion isn't disengaging totally on some casts. If you clean and lube it like @lo n slo said and it still makes that sound, you need to send it in to the factory. jj 3 Quote

Something is definitely wrong and I agree with the pinion as your first issue but a baitcaster is a very complex piece of machinery and you may need to send it to Delaware Valley Tackle or a local guy who repairs reels. Be sure to have anyone who repairs your reel use new grease with some graphite in it. If you do nothing you could tear up the plastic gears inside the reel. Circle around and let us know what you find out and what was done to make the repair. Quote
collinfiske_RFC Posted February 10, 2020 Posted February 10, 2020 If its brand new out of the box just swap them out before paying a shop out of pocket to fix it. Probably a defect from manufacturer. Could be sand, dust ect. in there too if its been sitting around a while. Simple clean could be the fix. Quote
garroyo130 Posted February 10, 2020 Posted February 10, 2020 Ive had this happen on lower end Daiwas (Fuegos) where the issue was if the cast control knob was left too loose, the spool lip would actually come into contact with the frame. If your cast control knob is super loose, try tightening it up just a smidge to see if it fixes it. Quote
