Super User A-Jay Posted February 12, 2020 Super User Posted February 12, 2020 Mr Wheeler is making a play to put this derby out of reach for the rest of the field. With just over an hour left, may be time to order the pizza ! A-Jay   Is this really happening ? Wow ! A-Jay 1 Quote
claya Posted February 12, 2020 Posted February 12, 2020 It's amazing how consistent Wheeler and Thrift are. No surprise they are 1 & 2. 1 Quote
Hawkeye21 Posted February 12, 2020 Author Posted February 12, 2020 Those bass look so pale. Barely look like bass to me. I'm use to bass with a lot of color in my waters. 1 Quote

One from each major brand is what they said in an earlier broadcast.  Forget the sponsorship money, he wants those $100,000 checks   1 Quote

Super User A-Jay Posted February 12, 2020 Super User Posted February 12, 2020 Congrats to Jacob Wheeler ~ Paced himself but in the end, He ran away and hid. Sure was fun to watch !  And I really appreciate that he was generous enough to allow us to share his face time with his family. Very Cool A-Jay  2 Quote
ryanerb Posted February 12, 2020 Posted February 12, 2020 Jacob's win really goes to show us it is all about 'ONE PILE'.... He milked that pile and won the tourney on one school that was massive. Prior to that, he was sitting pretty far back on score tracker.... It would be interesting if his brushpile dried up and he had to run to more piles (pattern like AA) if he still would have won. I personally believe this could be some of the 'luck' factor, finding the 'magic' pile could make or break it! Quote

Stay with them and keep catching them as long as they keep biting - check. Win - check. Seems like he did what every angler was attempting to do this and every other derby. Doesn't Luck Always play some role ? A-Jay    Quote

Everyone has a different opinion about how the percentage breaks down, such as 90% of fishing is skill and 10% is luck, etc. But... Wheeler has plenty of skill by his proven strong history, so when a tiny bit of luck comes on his side, watch out! 1 Quote

But I think these Pro's "make" quite a bit of it themselves by putting themselves in position succeed. A-Jay  Quote

No sweat for a pro. If you're a pro, you need the best BEST BEST. For us weekend anglers, I can just sit back and be jealous and only dream of 3 graphs with all the top technologies (Mega 360, Panoptix, etc etc) 1 Quote
Tlauz Posted February 12, 2020 Posted February 12, 2020 I love how unpredictable the format is. When Thrift was ahead by 10 pounds in the 3rd period JT and Marty were talking and wondering if anyone could make a run and challenge him. Wheeler proceeds to go on an unbelievable run and win going away. I have re-watched (numerous times) the MLF Cup event where Van Dam was down by around 27 pounds in the first period and ended up winning going away. I love watching everyones reaction as the score tracker keeps going off. This was a great derby. 3 Quote
Jim- Indiana Posted February 13, 2020 Posted February 13, 2020 IMO ... there is none better than Wheeler, in knowing how fish react in the current time of year, and weather conditions, with rising/falling water, along with clarity. It all started with riding his bike to the ramp, and hitching a ride as a co angler with his local club .... just a couple rods, and a handful of baits, with a burning desire to win! The last honey hole, was just a long point about mid creek of spawning flats, that he knew would come in to play as bass were staging. There may have been some wood, but he mentioned was void of brush piles, like a lot of the other offshore guys were fishing. He had previously marked some fish, but stated he had only caught one prior, but knew they would stage at some point.  I am sure that if he was in the market for a bonified electronics sponsor, all of the companies in play were more than happy to give him what he requested, just to have a chance to be his sponsor ..... if not ....Academy would have surely stepped up.  Knowing how, when, and where to use all of the equipment is most important part. It all started with the desire, and riding his bike to the ramp!   I might add .... as sort of a booby prize event, along with the money at stake for the heavy hitters tournament, they really need to only use the fish caught the first two days when the entire field is fishing .... wheeler was actually penalized a day of catching his best fish, and moving staright to the finals, all because he was catching them too good!    1 Quote
