Super User A-Jay Posted February 6, 2020 Super User Posted February 6, 2020 Haven't heard if they plan on fishing into Monday or cut this one short and finishing up on Sunday PALATKA, Fla. — B.A.S.S. officials made a decision to cancel the first day of competition on the St. Johns River today after the National Weather Service (NWS) issued a wind advisory making the fishery unsafe for boaters. The wind advisory is calling for winds 15-25 m.p.h. with gusts over 40. “Safety for our anglers and Marshals is our primary concern,” said Trip Weldon, Bassmaster Elite Series Tournament Director. “We have been monitoring the weather closely, and had discussions with NWS last night and this morning to see if the weather situation would change. “Beginning this morning and into the afternoon, the wind was just going to be too high to safely be on the water.” Competition in the AFTCO Bassmaster Elite at St. Johns River is expected to resume Friday morning when the field of 88 anglers launches at 7:15 a.m. from Palatka Riverfront Park. Hawkeye21 Posted February 6, 2020 Posted February 6, 2020 Is it normal to cancel due to wind only? I looked at the weather there and it looks like 10 mph sustained winds with just over 20 mph gusts. That doesn't sound all that extreme. We don't cancel kayak tourneys for wind like that. Quote
BoatSquirrel Posted February 6, 2020 Posted February 6, 2020 Wind advisory there today. Winds 20 gusting to 35. After that poor guy died on Okechobee a few years back, the rules changed. 6 foot waves just plain suck anyway. Quote
BassNJake Posted February 6, 2020 Posted February 6, 2020 They only did this to mess with the BPT that starts tomorrow 3 Quote
newriverfisherman1953 Posted February 6, 2020 Posted February 6, 2020 Good for them. Safety on the water is nothing to take lightly. They put way too many people on the water to take unnecessary risks. 1 Quote
Super User scaleface Posted February 6, 2020 Super User Posted February 6, 2020 They are planning on fishing Monday with a shortened day , 2:00 I believe. Quote

I also confirmed the same from the BASS site. Additionally .... Drew Benton headed for home this morning (5hr drive), after they induced labor on his wife as she was having some issues. The natural birth day was expected 2/28, but if all goes well with his new son and wife, he may show up in the morning to fish! Quote

The good news is that Drew's new son Colt, and his wife are doing fine! Lucky for him, Friday's action is again cancelled, so he can stick around today, and get ready for Sat, Sun, Mon action! 3 Quote

Super User jbsoonerfan Posted February 7, 2020 Super User Posted February 7, 2020 I have fished a couple tournaments where I wish they would have canceled due to high wind. At least two of those times we quit before noon because you couldn't even hold the boat still on any part of the lake. I try to stay off our larger bodies of water (Texoma and Eufaula) when I know it's going to be windy, but when there was a tourney there we had no choice but to try. Just glad I fish for fun now so I can call the shots. LOL 2 Quote
