Since KVD left quantum I need to find out who is making composite rods with graphite and glass. His rods at quantum were amazing. Do anybody know of anybody making composite rods.

I've got a Kistler KLX Feel 'n Reel.  I got mine for $180 back when they had a end-of-year sale.  I think they're normally around $300 or so.  I've fished it exactly once and caught no fish on it, so I can't say much about it.  I guess I could say, it'll pull a 10XD okay without seeming overwhelmed.

Do they have a different name I'm on their website and can't find and thanks for the respond.

I am a fan of the Quantum KVD composite sticks, which are still often available on ebay.

While I have no first hand knowledge about them,

Lew's is offering a version - Lew's Fritts Perfect Crank Speed Stick Cast Rod

Price seems reasonable too.

Powell has crankbait rods, of which many are composite. The Endurance line is good, and they have a "Mistake" outlet that sometimes has composite rods. Not only that, but Powell rods are frequently on sale at retailers, including Tackle Warehouse.      jj

Dobyns Champion Glass rods are actually composite. I also have a nice cheaper composite that I like from 13 Fishing, the Defy Black Crankbait Rod, it's a 7'3 Heavy, but it balances perfectly, it's a great rod for $50-$60. If you want to go cheaper than that, there is the Ugly Stik GX2 and that's composite, and I don't care what anyone says, they are awesome cranking sticks for the money, I have 4 of them.

I would assume Lew's will soon be putting out new items with KVD's name on it, matching the type of equipment he had Quantum make him? So possibly hold out a bit?

It doesn't look like they have the model I have stocked right now, but they probably just have sold off all the inventory for now.

This is the one I have, couldn't remember the specs on it.

Hey A-Jay, earlier this week I ordered a QUANTUM TOUR KVD TKVD7106MB MH rod based upon your recommendation in another thread. I am going to use it as a deep crank rod and am looking forward to throwing around a 7'10" rod for the first time. Had a question about it, though. Is this such a technique specific rod that you can't do much else with it or are there other presentations you think it would work well with?

Powell makes a decent rod.

I have heard some people say the handle length on these rods is kind of on the short side, making it hard to really lay into it and let loose on a mile long cast. Do you think the handle length feels short on them and sort of can affect your ability to make super long casts?

That is a very hard question to answer.  Some people like short handles and some long.  I went as far as having a couple of custom rods built and I was asked several times if I was sure.  For me the pheonix rods are amazing and the x13 is what my custom is built on.  In the factory form the x13 is not a rod I like.  The handle killed it for me.  My dobyns 764 is a great rod with a short handle and I fished it twice and it sits in the corner.  I like the blank hate the handle.

The composite rods are a blend of fiberglass and graphite that was called E glass, now most crankabit bait rods are composite.

This exact thing is the only gripe I have with my nrx 803c. That thing is an absolute senko destroyer of worlds...except the handle is just a liiiittle too short for those times when I wanna get my other hand in there for a more distant target.

If you're asking about the Lew's Fritts Perfect Crank Speed Stick Cast Rod,

I do not own any nor have I fish one.

Accordingly, I can't say one way or the other.

As noted above, handle length likes or dislikes are fairly user specific.

They are listed by Lew's as between 14" - 16.5" (depending on blank length) throughout the line.

If those numbers fall within your own sweet spot for handle length, then you might be good.

If not, guess you'll be looking else where.

Personally, I am a two handed caster.

So the only time I like a shorter handle, is when I need to 'work a bait' with some type of wrist action.

This seems like a decent place to ask this....

Has anyone ever heard of composite rods not being perfectly straight? Or rather, it being acceptable for one to have a slight curve?  I was recently told by a rod manufacturer that it is common, but I've never known this to be the case.

Yes blanks can have a curve to them.  Are some better than others, of course.  A builder will orient that curve to minimize its effect.  A lot of curve is unappealing to look at.

10-4.

I guess I've never owned a rod with a visible curve to it, so this one caught me off guard. It was a $150 rod.

It seems to mainly curve "downward", as in it always looks like you have a very light lure tied on.

Check out Simmons Sporting Goods on eBay.  I picked up two of the KVD Tour Rods from them and they are not bad but not the greatest.  They were definitely worth the money.
