Adam Markley Posted February 5, 2020 Posted February 5, 2020 Hello, I purchased a 6’10 st croix mojo mlxf. I was planning to throw senkos, small jigs, finesse SwimBaits, and drop shots. Should I have gone with the m/f, or will the ml/xf get the job done? Mainly talking about weightless 5” senkos Quote
Super User FryDog62 Posted February 5, 2020 Super User Posted February 5, 2020 That rod should excel for drop-shotting, and I think wacky-style Senkos too. Don’t think I’d throw a weightless Senko Texas-rigged into cover with it though. 2 Quote
ResoKP Posted February 5, 2020 Posted February 5, 2020 I have 6'9" Avid X MLXF. Good for drop-shot & ned. M power would be much better for the rest of the techniques you mentioned. 1 Quote
Bass Rutten Posted February 5, 2020 Posted February 5, 2020 I’d choose the medium power for the senkos and jigs with standard hooks, but with fine wire hooks you should be ok, just make sure any jigs have an easily collapsible weed guard, thin out if needed. With the senko use owner twistlock light hooks and you should be able to get all that done with the medium light rod as st croixs typically run a bit heavier, especially if using braided line. 4 Quote
Adam Markley Posted February 5, 2020 Author Posted February 5, 2020 Tanks for the replies, I returned it and went with the 7’1 mf mojo. Seems like the better choice for an all-around finesse setup that can still fish the same baits as the ML. 2 Quote

Hate to do this to you but if you have a bass pro nearby they have the US made premier series split grips on sale right now, you can get the 7' medium for $128, smokin' deal https://www.basspro.com/shop/en/st-croix-premier-split-grip-spinning-rod Quote

I wish I saw this earlier, I exchanged it at a little local tackle shop. And had them order me the mf. Quote
Super User Fishes in trees Posted February 5, 2020 Super User Posted February 5, 2020 senkos .. small jigs. .. finess swim baits .. .. drop shot ... What you gonna do if you throw a senko for 5 or 6 casts and then decide to throw a small jig into the same place? Retie? How much time will that take? Looks to me like you're going to need 4 rigs. 1 Quote

On a budget man, trying to get the best bang for the buck. Ideally, yes I probably would have 3-4 of these finesse spin rods on me at a time, but for now I’m looking for one to cover the majority of finesse techniques. I think the m/f fits the bill. Quote

I have a Cabelas and BPS next to me, hopefully they aren't sold out of them completely. I'm looking to get a 6'-6". Can't see a need for the additional 6" for a 7', fishing from a kayak Quote

I needed one really versatile rod for finesse and medium power applications. It’s a very good rod choice for a lot of the ways you said you fish ? 1 Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted February 7, 2020 Super User Posted February 7, 2020 You should be fine with the finesse swimbaits, and the drop shot. I sometimes fish jigs and senkos in heavy cover so I like to use a mh/f for those baits. Quote
Steve S Posted February 8, 2020 Posted February 8, 2020 I think the Med is a good choice and great all around rod. You could probably get away with some of the lighter lure techniques but would be able to fish a lot more techniques on the Med compared to the Med light. I never realized how heavy a Senko was until I weighed one (3/8oz plastic alone) Hope you have a blast with your new rod. The 7’ Med Tatula I have throws 1/8-3/4 and can throw most lighter baits (Ned rigs)ok but is great for senkos and the other techniques listed. I mainly use light to Med wire hooks on that rod Quote

Now this is a man after my own heart. Especially if he has more than one for each technique so he can have a couple different lures ready to go. Quote
