5by3 Posted February 5, 2020 Posted February 5, 2020 Looking for a heavy duty reel to use on a a 7’11 XH rod for swimbaits, a-rigs, and on the rare occasion, punching. Not a fan of the round reels, so I’d like to stick with a low profile in the 200-300 size. Probably won’t use this rod very often, so don’t want to spend more than ~ $200-250 on this reel. What do you guys suggest? Must say I’m a huge shimano fan, but willing to explore other brands too. Can I get by with a curado or should I upgrade to the tranx? Quote
Super User FishTank Posted February 5, 2020 Super User Posted February 5, 2020 I have a Revo Toro Beast for swimbaits and so far this thing has been amazing but is kind of overkill for bass fishing. If you are going to throw some heavy baits this thing can take it and more. It's oddly buttery smooth too. It was originally around $400 but can be found for about $200-$250. It is definitely a lot of reel for the money. Quote

Super User Fishes in trees Posted February 5, 2020 Super User Posted February 5, 2020 If you can find one of the old Curado 300 E's that would be a good choice. A tranx in the size of our choice would be excellent. I wouldn't consider any other reel. Quote
VolFan Posted February 6, 2020 Posted February 6, 2020 A Curado 300E or 200/300D would be an easy get and a tank for what you're asking. Quote

Easy get? People are asking more for the 300e's than a new Tranx and you can't hardly find a new 200d. Not easy finds at all. Quote
Super User NorcalBassin Posted February 6, 2020 Super User Posted February 6, 2020 Tranx 300 would be tough to beat and it will be within your price range during the next round of sales. I have a couple of them on swimbait rods and couldn't be happier. Quote
Big Swimbait Posted February 7, 2020 Posted February 7, 2020 I have a couple of Daiwa Lexa 300 with the Winn Grips that I really like. But I just recently scored a Tranx 300 off of a Facebook swimbait page. I only thought the Lexa was heavy duty - the Tranx is a beast! Quote
5by3 Posted February 7, 2020 Author Posted February 7, 2020 I’m leaning towards the tranx. One thing I noticed is that TW has this reel listed at something like 11-12 oz. is it really that heavy and do you notice the weight when you’re fishing with it? Seems pretty heavy, but I guess when you factor in the 300 size frame, maybe not so much. Quote

However, I doubt I would use the Tatula 200 for baits like an 8" hud, or any bait say 5 oz and above that. A size 300 or 400 reel is best suited for the really big baits. Example, I tried throwing an 8" hud ROF 12 with my Curado 201 E..It felt like it struggled a bit, I then mounted my 301E Curado ( the green one) and the 8" Hud flew way further with much less effort. While you could get away with the 200, imho it isn't designed for long cast's with heavy line and a heavy lure. Quote

He said he was looking for a reel in the 200-300 size to throw a-rigs, swimbaits and some punching. I didn't read anything about 8" Hud, specifically. In that case, you could be right. I've yet to throw anything over 3oz on mine. 1 Quote

Sorry, I missed the part about some occasional punching..Still, depending on the A rig, he still may need a size 300 reel. Better to be over gunned, than under gunned. I threw the 8" in there as an example, just in case.. 1 Quote

5by3 Posted February 7, 2020 Author Posted February 7, 2020 This reel would mostly be used for a-rigs with 1/8-3/16 oz heads, hudd 68 specials, s-waiver 168, etc. Nothing too big. Quote
