mdgreco191 Posted July 11, 2007 Posted July 11, 2007 I have quite frequently heard and read about changing out the trebles on all your lures. I have never done that and have not lost a fish that could be attributed to a dull or bad hook. Is that just for certain brands of lures or any lure at all. Quote
Bizzo Posted July 11, 2007 Posted July 11, 2007 I always change my hooks to gamakatsu hooks when I can. Some lures don't have rings so I will just sharpen those. I notice a big difference when I do change them. I also check my worm hooks often and change them as soon as they get even a little dull. Quote
GrandSlamBasser87 Posted July 11, 2007 Posted July 11, 2007 I think it is more personal preference when it comes to changing out hooks. I too have never changed hooks and still hook and land fish the same. However, I do like to go through my hooks and sharpen them every once in a while. I would say you can't go wrong with sharpening hooks every so often as opposed to buying brand new ones, thats just my opinion. Quote
ffmedic147 Posted July 11, 2007 Posted July 11, 2007 Well since this thread is talking about treble hooks how about changing the size of the hooks when you start barely hooking fish. I recently heard KVD mention changing the hooks on his crankbait trying to find the one that gets more hooks in the fish. Whats this all about? Quote
The_Natural Posted July 11, 2007 Posted July 11, 2007 All my cranks except for Lucky Crafts immediately get a pair of Diiachi 4x bleeding trebles. Sharpest, longest lasting, most durable hooks I have found, and even the red stays on longer than other brands. Quote
Super User Marty Posted July 11, 2007 Super User Posted July 11, 2007 Crankbaits come with varying quality hooks, and fortunately, these days, the trend seems to be going toward better hooks. I'm strictly a recreational angler and change hooks only on a couple of lures that have really bad hooks. If I can sharpen hooks that meet the fingernail test then I leave them on. Other people aren't comfortable unless they have the best quality hooks on all lures. If you aren't losing fish due to bad hooks, then why fix what ain't broke? Quote

Just curious, but if you have never changed hooks to try using different ones, how can you say you land fish the same? I know that when I went to better hooks, my hookup/landing ratio went up. Quote
GrandSlamBasser87 Posted July 12, 2007 Posted July 12, 2007 Im with ya Marty, If it ain't broke, don't fix it! Been tellin' people that for years about my trusty Thunderhead broadheads when they try to get me to upgrade. haha Bizzo- When i said i still land fish the same, I mean i'm still landing hooked fish the same as when I first bought the hook(s) i'm using; not opposing changed ones. I know i can't say much about changing hooks, im just backing a good sharpenin' here and there. Quote
