Hi fellow anglers. A friend and I are planning a trip to Burt/mullet lakes in early-mid may. We are looking to catch some smallmouth. We are avid bass fishermen but are unfamiliar with the lakes themselves. Not asking for anyone’s honey holes or secret spots, but if anyone could give us some advice; baits, techniques, what to expect, etc; it would be much appreciated. Thank you in advance

Ned rigs and tube jigs always produce for me in those lakes.  The smallies will be in shallower water until around early June, so fish the reeds and edges of weed beds.

On Burt, big small mouth will be cruising the shallows around the beach areas. However, if they see you then they're gone. Long casts required.

Also check the Indian River, if you see crayfish every where, then the smallies are in there.

If all else fails, look for where the walleye guys are clustered up and fish a ring around them because they are on the bait.

And if you are feeling brave, make the run and fish a drop shot next to the pillars of the Mackinaw Bridge in Lake Michigan.

Got this 5.88lb Smallie out of Burt Lake during the morning topwater bite a few years ago:

Hello anglers, I am going to Burt and mullet lake end of may. I´ve never fished there before and I´m looking for small mouth tips for these lakes. Anything helps! Thank you

I’ve only fished mullet once in August 2020 and we struggled. There are a couple sunken islands on mullet more to the north part of the lake. We worked them and their drop offs but didn’t catch many. We did better in the Cheboygan River. I’m sure you’ll do better though in May. Good luck.
