Dean_S Posted February 2, 2020 Posted February 2, 2020 Do any of you guys use these line spoiling devices? I've seen ads for them pop up in my social media feed. They look like they might work but who knows. Thoughts? Dean Quote
Super User iabass8 Posted February 2, 2020 Super User Posted February 2, 2020 No, build your own for less than 10$. Quote
Super User Fishes in trees Posted February 3, 2020 Super User Posted February 3, 2020 My Berkley line spooling station has lasted well over a dozen years. I think it was worth the money. Like any other tool there is a learning curve to getting the line perfectly on the reel. Quote
mc6524 Posted February 3, 2020 Posted February 3, 2020 Yes' the Berkly tool really helps especially for spinning reels. I keep it in a bag with my line making it convenient to take to tournaments, Quote
browne762 Posted February 3, 2020 Posted February 3, 2020 I have something like this and I really like it. Worth the $20 in my opinion. https://www.ebay.com/itm/US-STOCK-Portable-Fishing-Reel-Line-Spooler-Winder-Line-Winding-System-Machine/312939955516?hash=item48dcacc53c:g:vtsAAOSwfsReGYST Cabelas and Amazon sell something like them for $45ish, but I see no difference from those and the $20 ones. swhit140 Posted February 3, 2020 Posted February 3, 2020 I just stick my spool of line in the couch cushion and it holds the tension or I'll use my wife for slave labor with a pencil.. 2 1 1 Quote
FishinBuck07 Posted February 3, 2020 Posted February 3, 2020 I also just use my wife and a pencil as an easy solution to this problem!? 3 Quote
OnthePotomac Posted February 3, 2020 Posted February 3, 2020 Before I bought my Berkley spooler 15 years ago I just laid the spool on top of my work bench and spooled a reel with the line through a phone book. 1 Quote
Super User Dwight Hottle Posted February 3, 2020 Super User Posted February 3, 2020 Why would you want to spoil your line? ? 1 Quote

Isn't that tool supposed to help take line twist out while spoiling a spinning reel? If so, how does it work? Quote
Super User ChrisD46 Posted February 3, 2020 Super User Posted February 3, 2020 A line "spooling station" for a bait cast reel is convenient - for spinning reel I place a line spool on a small nail (nailed to a basement wood beam about 4' off the ground) to hold the spool and make sure the line coming off the line spool is the same direction as what my spinning reel is winding the line on . Afterwards , take off the spinning reel line spool and place the whole thing in a cup of warm water for 15 minutes so the freshly spooled on line will "set" . Lastly , my belief is spooling on line to a spinning reel where the line spool is at a 90 degree angle to how your spinning reel is spooling on line is a disaster waiting to happen ! Whether you use the nail in the wall method I use ofr place the spool of line on the floor - you want the line coils coming off the line spool the same way/direction as what your spinning reel winds the line on . 1 Quote
Super User jbsoonerfan Posted February 3, 2020 Super User Posted February 3, 2020 I have 4 kids I can use to hold a pencil, a spooling station sure would be a lot less hassle though. 1 Quote

If so, how does it work? Yes it does, it will spin as you are spooling up the reel. It has seemed to help in my experience. Then when you spool a baitcaster you are able to screw lock the spinning part down so it doesn't spin. Another feature is that you can set how much tension the line has while you are putting it on the reel. All in all, I really like the thing. I let me two buddies use it last year and after they both purchased them too. I have wasted $20 on many other odd things in the past, but I feel like this was money well spent even though it looks like a gimmicky thing. 1 Quote

I wonder if the direction of the line coming off the spool matters? Mike Iaconelli made a video last week on spooling line onto his spinning reels and stresses the line should be coming off the spool in the opposite direction that the reel is turning. Quote

I’ve battled with this many times. I believe this is correct. To have line going on the reel in the same direction that it’s coming off the spool it needs to go on the reel clockwise and come off the spool counterclockwise. This is for spinning reels. Quote

Super User webertime Posted February 3, 2020 Super User Posted February 3, 2020 Drop the spool in a pot of hot/warm water and spool up. Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted February 4, 2020 Super User Posted February 4, 2020 I just ask my wife to hold the spool, or run the line through a few phone books. Sometimes both. Quote
