Jaybert Posted February 1, 2020 Posted February 1, 2020 I’ve been doing some research on this reel and it gets primarily awesome reviews. I’m considering splurging on one as a match to my new Loomis CR722 imx pro. Have decent stuff but this would be 1st step into a “higher end” reel. Small 1/4 poppers, some jerk baits small cranks and plastics for this combo. Have my curado DC on it now and it feels ok but the curado does feel a bit heavy on this rod. Aldebaran is super light I see but I can’t really see one local before buying. Can anyone tell me how the frame size of the curado Dc vs alberdan compares? I assume Aldebaran is smaller perhaps which would be fine on this rod. I know the 50 size means the spool is smaller but how about the frame? And I guess anyone who has Aldebaran are they as awesome as people say and a good match for a light weight 2 power loomis rod? 1 Quote
The Bassman Posted February 2, 2020 Posted February 2, 2020 I don't think you could make a better choice. I have a last gen Ald 50 on an older 2 power IMX and it's absolutely perfect. It's definitely smaller than the Curado. Quote
Super User jbsoonerfan Posted February 2, 2020 Super User Posted February 2, 2020 I have an Aldebaran 50 on a 6'10 ML Zodias with 10 lb fluoro for 1/16 oz T-Rigs and shakey heads and it is a great little setup. I don't throw it a ton as I don't enjoy that style nearly as much but when the bite is tough I go light. Quote
Super User PhishLI Posted February 2, 2020 Super User Posted February 2, 2020 My buddy picked up an Alde 51 and a 7'1" M NRX the other day. Spooled it with 15lb PP. The reel is tiny and feather weight. In hand it feels way smaller than a K. The combo is super light. It's not a BFS reel but reasonably light baits are no problem. It's a great setup. For giggles he tied on an Ika and chucked it halfway across the lake. Quote
Jaybert Posted February 2, 2020 Author Posted February 2, 2020 Hmm I was hoping to kick this urge I have to buy one of these reels. But this isn’t helping. They are pricey but I imagine worth it in the long run. With my cr722 this combo would be like a feather I’d imagine Quote
Super User NHBull Posted February 2, 2020 Super User Posted February 2, 2020 Not to muddy the water, but look at the NEW Anteres ? 1 Quote

scbassin Posted February 2, 2020 Posted February 2, 2020 Check out the Scorpion 70/71 series They will save you some money. This is what I have. They do have lower gear ratio's. Quote
Super User fishwizzard Posted February 2, 2020 Super User Posted February 2, 2020 I have a few CR rods and a Aldebaran 50 or Daiwa Alphas fits them perfectly. Quote
Jaybert Posted February 2, 2020 Author Posted February 2, 2020 There are still some prior model Aldebaran on Amazon etc at pretty good prices. Does the MGL spool really make that big of a difference ? Quote

The spools are already small and lightweight in both reels already. 1 Quote
Manifestgtr Posted February 3, 2020 Posted February 3, 2020 The aldebaran/nrx combo was my number one all last year (as evidenced by my thumbnail). They’re amazing reels in terms of build quality, ergonomics and function. For some reason, I’m more accurate with an aldebaran 50hg than any other reel...couldn’t tell you why. It doesn’t make a ton of sense. But the phenomenon has presented itself across several different rods and bait types. The only thing to check is that your nrx balances at least somewhat closely to the reel seat. If it doesn’t, the aldebaran isn’t going to give you much help in that dept...it’s just too light. Quote
gilkeybr Posted February 3, 2020 Posted February 3, 2020 I was planning to get another Aldebaran to pair with an 852 that I just picked up. But then I held my Aldebaran up next to a Revo ALX and was surprised by how much smaller the Revo frame was compared to the Aldebaran. Now it has me considering a MGXtreme... Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted February 4, 2020 Super User Posted February 4, 2020 One of the PERFECT reels! Quote

Realizing it’s not an Aldebaran but still a good Reel for far less. Any downsides to this reel ordered from Japan? Only Xg and hg available so is hg ok for topwaters, jerks etc Quote
Super User jbsoonerfan Posted February 6, 2020 Super User Posted February 6, 2020 I have the Scorpion 70xg and the Aldebaran 50. To me, I would go with the Alde every time for anything that might be under that 1/4 oz threshold. As a matter of fact, I also own a Scorpion MGL and would probably choose it over the 70. I have tried using the 70 with lighter weight lures, but I find it shines at about 3/8 oz and up. I actually moved my 70 to my Carolina Rig and throw 3/8 to half oz with it. Others may find different results, but that is just my opinion. Quote
scbassin Posted February 7, 2020 Posted February 7, 2020 I do not have the Aldebaran or the Scorpion mgl so I can not compare. I do use my Scorpion 71 XG with 3/16oz. worm weights & spinnerbaits with no problem at all. If you are interested here is a cheaper option on a new one with free shipping by EMS. https://www.digitaka.com/item.php?item=4969363034717. If your right handed I have 2 of these & this will do a good job casting light lures. It's a excellent price on this site. https://www.americanlegacyfishing.com/shimano-metanium-mgl-low-profile-casting-reels.html Quote

And a great price on the metanium for sure. Frame size wise is the metanium compact like the scorpion? Compact is good for my 2 power loomis. Thanks again Quote
Super User jbsoonerfan Posted February 7, 2020 Super User Posted February 7, 2020 I also have the Metanium MGL and it is my favorite reel for throwing a T-Rig. Now that could be because it is on a Poison Adrena, but it is an awesome reel. I couldn't choose one reel to do everything you are wanting a reel to do, but if I had to choose just one reel to do all of those things, it would go like this (for the reels I currently own) Metanium MGL Scorpion MGL Aldebaran MGL Bantam MGL (my favorite reel, but probably not as light as you are wanting) Scorpion 70 Curado K I mean, if you really want a great one, look for a Core 50mg7. I have owned 5 or 6 and I kick myself everytime I sell one. LOL Quote
scbassin Posted February 7, 2020 Posted February 7, 2020 I bought mine from Digitaka A good while back & all the paper work is here at the house but it's Japanes Aldebaran MGL e. The reel is at the lake & due to health issues I have not been up there in a while. I don't remember if it's a 50 or a 100 size. I do know it weighs 6.2 oz. & it should serve you well. but here is it's replacement. https://www.tacklewarehouse.com/Shimano_Metanium_MGL_150_B_Casting_Reel/descpage-MTMB.html I would still go with the smaller one because of the price you can get it at. It is a very good reel If I was going to choose it would be the Metanium. Like I said earlier I can't compare the Scorpion MGL or the Aldebaran MGL but I do feel if you feel your at your upper limit price wise, I think the Scorpion 70/71 is a very good option. You can cast a 3/16 th oz. bait all day long. I also have no problem with a 1/8th weight & a zoom baby brush hog. I just checked the prices for you. Scorpion 70 $180.97 vs $299.99 both have free shipping. Weigh the usage against the money. Good Luck. Quote
Jaybert Posted February 8, 2020 Author Posted February 8, 2020 Thanks I am going to try the metanium mgl. $299 seems like a great deal on this reel. Plus I got 10% off at AL to sign up for their newsletter. Free shipping too. So $268 usd shipped. Even converted to cdn its still a great deal. Cdn MSRP for metanium mgl is $599 up here plus sales tax. So even if I don’t like it I should be able to sell it without loosing too bad. Still would like an Alderbaran or scorpion at some point but will see how this one works out. Still wondering if the profile will be a bit bigger than I want on my medium Loomis rod but at the price I couldn’t pass up trying it out.. Quote
scbassin Posted February 8, 2020 Posted February 8, 2020 That would have been my choice also, especially at that price. Quote
Super User Raul Posted February 9, 2020 Super User Posted February 9, 2020 DO NOT, DO NOT BUY THAT REEL !!!!!!!!!! Because if you do you will be spoiled forever and ever. Chronarch 50Mg + GLoomis CR723 IMX and nothing has been the same ever since. Quote
