redmeansdistortion Posted February 1, 2020 Posted February 1, 2020 I'm looking for #6 and #8 single inline hooks to swap my F3 and F5 Rapalas over from trebles. I understand my hookup rate may go down, but these are more for stream fishing where I encounter, and unfortunately donate a lot of baits to the logjams and other gremlins. There have been days where I've got zero fish but lost $20+ worth of baits and I feel singles will help out in that department. I've looked at VMC and Owner and they only appear to go as small as #6. Is there anything available from other reputable manufacturers? Quote
Super User Crestliner2008 Posted February 1, 2020 Super User Posted February 1, 2020 Check out the VMC line up of "In-Line" single hooks for replacing trebles on cranks. I troll series 300 Bandit cranks and use a single #1/0 VMC In-Line on the rear hanger with excellent results. The bandits are a bit fatter than the Raps are, but you really need that wide hook gap to set well. JMO. Quote
The Bassman Posted February 1, 2020 Posted February 1, 2020 I use the Owner inlines on some of my lures and agree that the #6 is still too big for a #3 or 5 Rapala. What I do is just go up a size with the trebles and cut off the two hooks that would face wrong. 1 Quote
Super User JustJames Posted February 1, 2020 Super User Posted February 1, 2020 Owner single replacement hook goes down to #10 the last time I checked. Otherwise you can order from Finesse-Fishing.com. I have no name #4 if you wanna try it, should fit F5 but F3 might be too big. 1 hour ago, The Bassman said: I use the Owner inlines on some of my lures and agree that the #6 is still too big for a #3 or 5 Rapala. Inline hook supposed to be stronger? 1 Quote
BASS302 Posted February 1, 2020 Posted February 1, 2020 @redmeansdistortion, I don't know if this would work as an alternative, but you can remove the split rings and attach siwash hooks directly. Most siwash hooks are available with an open eye, and I think they make them in small sizes (8 and 10). The down side is that siwash hooks appear to be heavy. Not sure how that would affect the action of your lures. Quote
Crankin4Bass Posted February 2, 2020 Posted February 2, 2020 TW has a chart in the description of owner inline singles with sizes to use to replace trebles. https://www.tacklewarehouse.com/Owner_Single_Replacement_Hook_X_Strong/descpage-OSRH.html?from=gshop&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIrtuS0PCy5wIVzJyzCh0nUg6qEAQYBCABEgI9jvD_BwE The F5 takes #10 trebles, so according the chart use a #6 inline hook. The F3 takes #12 trebles. The Owner inline hooks go down to #6 so maybe try # 6’s or get some #8’s from the finesse-fishing site James recommended. I tried Siwash hooks. The problem is when you close the eye it’s too small to move freely. Quote
Super User fishwizzard Posted February 2, 2020 Super User Posted February 2, 2020 I prefer the Owner Cultiva SBL-75M barbless single hooks, I think the barbed ones have a different number. Quote
redmeansdistortion Posted February 2, 2020 Author Posted February 2, 2020 I do have plenty of siwash hooks in various sizes as I swap all of my spoons and spinners to singles. I'll try the finesse fishing site that was mentioned here. I thought about running siwash hooks but they're a little too long for Rapalas IMO. Quote
Super User JustJames Posted February 2, 2020 Super User Posted February 2, 2020 I have a question for you, are you trying to match treble hook replacement guide which called for size 6 for #10 treble hook hook? I normally would go bigger as long as that doesn’t effect action or buoyancy of the lure. Quote

I'm only running one hook on these Rapalas, the front hook will be removed and not replaced, just the rear hook will be replaced with a single inline. These are used for stream smallies and trout such as browns, bows, and brookies. Quote
Super User JustJames Posted February 2, 2020 Super User Posted February 2, 2020 I was gonna say the same to only use 1 hook on F3 but bigger on F5 I would add samller one in the front since it 2” long. This is not mine This mine #10 and #12 treble hook to #4 Quote

IIRC I use #6 hooks on the F5 lures. 1 Quote

redmeansdistortion Posted February 12, 2020 Author Posted February 12, 2020 Hooks came in yesterday. I got a pack of #6, #8, and #10 hooks. I also grabbed some siwash hooks for my hardware. These are all 1/8oz baits with #6 hooks. Tired of paying tribute to the river gods. 2 Quote

Would you consider using the same hooks that you've used on the minnows on the spinners or spoons? Or is there a reason to use different style single hooks? Quote
Vilas15 Posted February 13, 2020 Posted February 13, 2020 Interesting, ive considered doing something similar. Are you fishing from the banks or do you have waders? Im getting waders and think ill be able to free many more snags being able to go in after them instead of only changing which direction i pull. Quote
Super User WRB Posted February 13, 2020 Super User Posted February 13, 2020 Let us know that works out. Forward facing front hook isn't any different then a treble hook. Tom Quote

Tom That was my thought as well. Initially I was going to run the rear only but read elsewhere that it can mess up the action. I should still try anyway at least to see for myself. Quote
