LCG Posted February 1, 2020 Posted February 1, 2020 Looking for some input for a casting setup for spinnerbaits and chatterbaits in the 3/8-1/8oz range plus trailer of 1/8-3/8oz. Thinking of a Shimano Curado K in a 6:1 ratio and not sure about rod yet. Tried on two mh-xf rods and it didn't feel right. Thininkjng of maybe a MH-F rod rated to 1oz. So far short list is as follows... Carbonite 2.0 7ft MH-F Fenwick HMG 7ft MH-F St Croix Bass X 7'1 MH-F Any suggestions in the $100 range +/-. Something in the 6'9-7'0 range. Thoughts on action would be useful as well. Limited fishing time with these techniques so this is fairly new to me. Quote
Super User MN Fisher Posted February 1, 2020 Super User Posted February 1, 2020 I run spinners and chatters on a Fast rod. Saying that and your budget Dobyns Fury 704C - says it's a Heavy, but its lure range is what others call Medium-Heavy (1/4-1) I also run those lures on a 7-speed...right around 30 IPT 1 Quote
swhit140 Posted February 1, 2020 Posted February 1, 2020 I would add the Falcon BuCoo SR to your list for your price your looking at. The CarbonLite & Fenwick are decent rods in your price range. I won't recommend the St Croix Bass X, I tried one and it is very tip heavy so I returned back to TW. 1 Quote
Quarry Man Posted February 1, 2020 Posted February 1, 2020 +1 on the fury don't own one but have handled and would argue best rod around 100$ a 7' mh mod fast or fast rod is what you want I prefer floro, some like braid. I like having some stretch in the line 15-17 floro or 30-40 braid reel wise, a fuego ct in 6.3:1 is hard to beat falcon lowrider is a good rod, its what I have and love 1 Quote

The curado has peaked my interest and felt nice when I played with one in the stores. Quote
kayaking_kev Posted February 1, 2020 Posted February 1, 2020 Maybe consider getting a Shimano SLX DC, it might help with casting those bigger profile baits, especially into the wind and it cost about the same as the Curado K, I also heard they even feel similar. Or maybe the Shimano Intenza MH Glass. I have a Dobyns Champion Glass 705cb paired with a SLX XT for bladed jigs, but a lot of people love the 735 Glass as the ultimate chatterbait rod. 1 Quote

Maybe I will have to call around to see if anyone semi local carries them. I always hear good things about them. Thanks for the advice. Quote
Super User ChrisD46 Posted February 1, 2020 Super User Posted February 1, 2020 A 7' MH F would work if you are using a mono or co-poly main line with some stretch to it . If you use braid then a 7' MH Moderate action rod is better and perhaps even better with mono or co-poly again . According to those with experience , a more moderate action will allow bass to get the spinner bait or chatterbait in their mouth better and keep them buttoned up afterwards while a Fast action rod tends to jerk a spinner bait or chatterbait out of the bass's mouth before they get it good . This is where my confusion is ultimately. I generally fish soft plastics I seem to prefer xf action rods. But when casting spinnerbaits and chatterbaits, the rod doesn't feel right. So leaning towards a fast action, which I realize varies between manufacturers. I am 100% braid to leader. That fury peeks my interest but have to find one locally to give it a feel. I hear their actions are a little bit slower than most, so that might be a good fit. I do love my carbonlites though but willing to try other brands. Quote
FordsnFishin Posted February 1, 2020 Posted February 1, 2020 I prefer a slower action, which highly depends on the rod. For the reel I like to have a faster speed. Because at times im throwing these baits a good distance covering water. So I want to be able to take up line fast if needed. I can always slow my retrieve. The fury series would get my vote. Can be found for under 100 often. New or used Quote
Dens228 Posted February 1, 2020 Posted February 1, 2020 I prefer a MH/Fast for single hook applications. I used to use a St Croix Mojo Bass, now I use and AvidX, also MH/Fast. Quote
newyorktoiowa57 Posted February 1, 2020 Posted February 1, 2020 I like a Moderate fast action for those baits. The best I have tried for tthose 2 techniques is the SC Mojo Spinnerbait rod. Quote
Super User Fishes in trees Posted February 1, 2020 Super User Posted February 1, 2020 Reel wise last year I got a Curado 150 DC to throw spinner baits with. Like it a lot. Seems like I get a little more distance with the same effort than I got with previous reels that I used to throw spinner baits. At various times I've used a Shimano Calais, a Calcutta 250 TEGT, the regular Calcutta, Curado's with different letters B, D & E. The issue with the Calais and the Calcutta was that they were a little too heavy - not an issue when I was in my 50's but a significant issue as I got into my mid 60's. Rod wise, what is & what ain't a good spinnerbait rod is pretty subjective and one just needs to try different ones and fish with them to figure it out for yourself. Currently I have the Curado 150 DC on a 6'10" All Star Spinner bait rod I got on close out at Academy. ( the purple series ). In the past I thought the original All Star 6'9" All Star Well Rowland Spinner Bait rod was a good one. I have some 6'8" MH Fenwick AETOS rods ( bought 6 or so years ago, since discontinued ), that I liked for throwing either spinner baits or chatter baits. I don't know, the action I prefer is pretty much like a worm rod with a little more tip. Different companies label that action differently. I have a Falcon 7' Bucoo Trap Caster, which is my dedicated lipless crank rod, but I have thrown spinner baits/chatter baits with it and should I ever run across Another one, hopefully on close out, I'll probably buy it. A little longer that what I think is ideal but overall a real sweet rod for throwing any reaction bait, as long as they weigh at least 3/8 oz, half ounce is better. Quote

That is a medium heavy regular (or reaction) rod made by Daiwa which is considered by most a moderate fast. I like a 6.? ratio reel b/c i naturally reel faster and it just helps me slow it down. It works for the way I like to fish them. I have never really tried to burn them, but if I wanted to I might move up to a 7. Quote
LCG Posted February 2, 2020 Author Posted February 2, 2020 Thanks for all the great advice. Much to think about. Quote
Super User iabass8 Posted February 2, 2020 Super User Posted February 2, 2020 I like to throw the Karu VibraShock on a Gen1 MB Diablo Spec R. inbetween fast and mod. Dobyns Fury 734 would be a good 100$ option. Not really a fast action rod and more of a MH than H. Quote
Derek1 Posted February 2, 2020 Posted February 2, 2020 The fury 705cb is a great Spinnerbait rod believe it or not. Also with a currado dc. Spinnerbaits on that setup is my favorite way to fish right now. Quote

Derek1 Posted February 2, 2020 Posted February 2, 2020 I believe it’s labeled mod fast, but I’d have to check. It’s fast enough to drive the hook home on a Spinnerbait. Then has a nice smooth bend in it. I don’t really have allot of experience to compare it to other rods, but I didn’t loose to many on it. For $120 I have no complaints. Quote
Super User MN Fisher Posted February 2, 2020 Super User Posted February 2, 2020 The 705CB is primarily a crankbait rod. Spinners are a secondary technique, and yes, it's rated as a Moderate-Fast. I picked one up to use for cranks...I prefer a full Fast action for single-hook moving baits (spinners/chatters/buzz). Quote
detroit1 Posted February 2, 2020 Posted February 2, 2020 Ideally- 2 rods would be best imo. 6'8-10" m for short range, and 7' - 7'6" mh for long distance. Unfortunately, I have neither. ? Quote
