Quarry Man Posted January 31, 2020 Posted January 31, 2020 Last boat cover I purchased was not waterproof and it ripped very easily. it was a 600 denier cable's on I paid 75$ for. I want a new cover that can be used trailering, light storage, and on occasion while the boat is in the water. When the boat is in storage I will use a heavy tarp overtop as well. please recommend boat covers for a 14' semi v Quote
Super User Fishes in trees Posted January 31, 2020 Super User Posted January 31, 2020 I got mine from Cabelas - it was allegedly made to fit 18' aluminum bass boats. When I get it on and strap it down tight, it billows a little bit going down the road, but it hasn't ripped or anything yet. It is 8 years old and gets used 6 or 7 times per year. 1 Quote
Super User jbsoonerfan Posted January 31, 2020 Super User Posted January 31, 2020 There is a canvas place near me that makes tarps, covers, etc. for all sorts of things. You can take them your boat and they custom make one specifically for your boat. Double stitch the windshield, the trolling motor, everything. They are amazing covers. I will be taking my boat over there soon. They are about $700 but the ones I have seen look like they are worth every penny. Right now my boat is just under the carport and with the weather we have here, a good cover seems like it would pay for itself in no time. 1 Quote
kjfishman Posted January 31, 2020 Posted January 31, 2020 If I am reading your post correctly you plan on throwing a heavy tarp over the cover as well when the boat is stored. Learned the hard way you end up up with mold and mildew on the boat cover from condensation that builds up between the covers. 7 hours ago, Quarry Man said: Last boat cover I purchased was not waterproof and it ripped very easily. it was a 600 denier cable's on I paid 75$ for. OnthePotomac Posted January 31, 2020 Posted January 31, 2020 Here is another one: https://www.nationalboatcovers.com/?utm_source=bing&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=BC3%3A Virginia&utm_term=boat covers&utm_content=Boat Covers Tier1 BTW, I have been storing out doors with a tarp over my good cover for 18 years now and main cover is good as new and I never had a mold or mildew. This in Northern Virginia with some high humidity days in mid summer, but not every day all summer. The state park storage yard is smack on the side of the tidal Potomac, which may make a difference. 1 Quote

I like the one @OnthePotomac listed (https://www.nationalboatcovers.com/windstorm-boat-covers/v-hull-fishing-outboard-motor/14'6"--LENGTH--72"--WIDTH.html) because it seems very waterproof and is slightly cheaper than the one @GTN shared. Both look good and I will compare the two more in depth. The tarp I have is very waterproof if you pull it very tight. I will likely not even use the cover over the winter, and only the tarp. I won't be able to remove the framing like the other boat, but I will be seeing the wood very well with many layers. Cover will be used when trailering in rain, during storms and at night, and when I leave the boat in the water over night. I am planning on trying the two layers and stopping if I run into issues, I will heed your advice and avoid two layers for prolonged time to avoid mildew build up. thanks for all the help Quote
Super User Scott F Posted January 31, 2020 Super User Posted January 31, 2020 I hate trailering a boat with a non-custom made cover. They flap around and are difficult to secure tightly. The wind will destroy any cover that doesn’t fit tight. Straps tear off, and any pointy edge will tear a hole in it. It takes a while to put it on and off and if you remove it wet, you have to be sure to not roll it up until completely dry. A good, custom made cover, which can cost as much as your 14 footer is worth, is just not a good investment in your case. 2 Quote

The boat will be well built and completely waterproof, it can get wet, id rather it not obviously, but the main point of a cover is so that it stays clean for as long as possible. Think it would be fine to trailer without a cover? Quote
Super User Scott F Posted January 31, 2020 Super User Posted January 31, 2020 I’ve been trailering my boats for over 30 years. I’ve used a cover a total of 4 times. Not once in the last 14 years. The boat doesn’t get dirty. I leave the plug out so if it rains, the water drains out. Cover it while it’s parked. That’s where it will get dirty. 1 Quote

When ratcheted down tight you can't pull it off with a crane. It is also vented in the rear. Attwood builds a very durable and $$$ cover. 1 Quote

I like the idea of being able to store it in the water with the cover on. you can do that with my current cover, but it wasn't defined that way, plus its not exactly waterproof Quote
Elkins45 Posted February 22, 2020 Posted February 22, 2020 I made myself a PVC pipe frame to keep my Walmart cover taut and pointy so it doesn’t puddle water, but I never travel with it. The cover says it has a three year warranty and it’s already developed a hole after one winter, so I guess we shall see if they come thru. I’m going to eventually buy one of those aluminum carports for my boat and my tractor. I would rather pay big once than buy a new tarp or cover every year. My problem will be finding a decent flat spot to build it. Quote
