Bassfisherman05081986 Posted January 30, 2020 Posted January 30, 2020 So theres a 2017 Hobie Ouback Kayak used for sale right at $2,300 plus shipping $227. So is worth it to get the older model instead? Is it just as stable as the newer model? I heard a couple bad things about the newer hobies being top heavy where water comes over the front hatch and goes inside the boat due to it's new design. The 2017 model does indeed come with the 180 drive. It's on Kayak city and its camo and I'm really considering buying that used 2017 model. Any input would be helpful. I know the 17 doesn't come with gear tracks but I can add some if need be. Where would the fishfinder mount at on the hobie outback 2017? Or would I need geartracks added? Thanks Quote
Hook2Jaw Posted January 30, 2020 Posted January 30, 2020 The old style Outback is a great boat, the new style Outback is a great boat. I would go with a 2017 over a 2019 -- those particular hulls see problems and I'm not just talking the front hatch, which is easily fixed. People have been having their 19 hulls cracking from being in the high seat position. Get the 17 and stick a trac and switchblade transducer mount or, my personal preference, a Berleypro transducer cover. Quote
Bassfisherman05081986 Posted January 30, 2020 Author Posted January 30, 2020 Hook2Jaw I also was considering the Hobie Compass. I'm 6' 260lbs so which one would be better? I just love how you can easily personalize the compass and how much lighter it is. I also saw some videos of it handling the surf very well. I can personalize a new hobie compass on Delaware paddlesports and add the 180 drive and turbo, upgraded rectangular hatch, hookless map pockets, hobie deck pad for around $2800. I also heard that the Compass is a little more stable then the Outback. Idk if that is true. I know the compass floats on the water with the hull shape where the outback cuts through the water Quote
Hook2Jaw Posted January 30, 2020 Posted January 30, 2020 I've never been on a Compass, but the stability should be similar. All of those boats are, in my opinion, a wash. A 2017 Outback will have less deck space than a 2020 Outback or Compass. The 2020 Outback will be the more expensive boat, but it will be loaded with features in comparison to the Compass. The 2020 Compass can be very personalized, but you might end up more expensive than an Outback for similar features. Demo the boats. Look at the colors offered. Pick one. Quote
