MDbassin Posted January 29, 2020 Posted January 29, 2020 Other than the St.croix legend tournament and up (that's the only one I know of) what other rods are American made? Blank and all. Not just assembled in the US with a blank manufactured in china. I've heard Cashion rods are but figured I'd ask for any others Quote
GReb Posted January 29, 2020 Posted January 29, 2020 Cashion and Kistler are. I believe the higher end ALX are as well. Falcon Cara line is but they are discontinued I believe Quote
redmeansdistortion Posted January 29, 2020 Posted January 29, 2020 Most Lamiglas offerings over the $150 price point are USA made with a lifetime warranty. They're typically known for their salmon and steelhead rods, but they also have a nice selection of bass, walleye, inshore, and surf rods. https://www.lamiglas.com/collections/si-bass-series Quote
Super User Tennessee Boy Posted January 29, 2020 Super User Posted January 29, 2020 Shimano has a factory in the US where high end G Loomis rods and others brands as well are made. Kistler is made in America with North Fork Blanks also made here. Lamiglas Edge Rods Quote
Vilas15 Posted January 29, 2020 Posted January 29, 2020 St croix premier and avid are both below the legend tournament price level and made in USA. St croix Mojo, eyecon, panfish, bass-X, triumph are all made in mexico. 3 Quote
5by3 Posted January 29, 2020 Posted January 29, 2020 Loomis, St. Croix, Kistler, ALX Zolo/Enox, Cashion are a few that I’ve used. Quote

MDbassin Posted January 29, 2020 Author Posted January 29, 2020 So here's the other question. I own several Dobyns Champion XP and Champion Extreme HP rods. For rods from these American made companies in the same price points ($250 Champ XP, $350 Champ Extreme HP) would you recommend a switch or or are any dobyns better or is it about the same? Quote
Hulkster Posted January 29, 2020 Posted January 29, 2020 G. Loomis rods (all of them) are made in the USA Quote
CountryboyinDC Posted January 29, 2020 Posted January 29, 2020 There are a few others - Alpha Angler, Cajun (I think they make some bass rods), a few of the Fitzgerald flippin' sticks, Impulse, Edge, Power Tackle, and the BPS Patriot all say Made in USA on the label. I don't own any of those I listed, but I have to wonder if the US made rods are going the way of the buggy whip. My dollar is going to companies who try to keep jobs here as long as there is a reasonably suitable product made here. Falcon was the last horse that left the barn in terms of companies whose products I used, but there'll probably be others. 1 Quote

When they stopped making them in the US, I switched to St Croix. I want to buy stuff made by real companies. Companies founded by people that love fishing that design and make what they sell. Not marketing companies that order stuff from China and have is shipped directly to amazon.com. If we want to have a real American bass fishing industry, we have to support them. 3 Quote
CountryboyinDC Posted January 29, 2020 Posted January 29, 2020 I'm with @Tennessee Boy, and the last rod I bought was an ALX Zolo I got at the Richmond Fishing Expo. The proportion of US-made St. Croix rods will probably grow too. 1 Quote
Super User WRB Posted January 30, 2020 Super User Posted January 30, 2020 Rod blanks that are layed up or manufactured in the USA are limited to a few companies mentioned. The guide train and reel seats are imported components and assembled to the American manufactured rod blanks by Loomis, Lamiglas, higher end St Croix. I am not sure about Kistler, Cashion, ALX blanks. I know my custom ALX rods used Lamiglas blanks. Dobyns designs his rods and they are manufactured off shore. You can visit the rod manufacturing facility in Woodland Washington for Loomis and Lamiglas and the St Croix facility in Wisconsin. Tom 1 Quote
zell_pop1 Posted January 30, 2020 Posted January 30, 2020 I'm with @Tennessee Boy too, I have several Falcon Lowrider rods and will no longer buy new ones. Was Falcon bought out by Pure Fishing like All Star or something to that effect? Guess I'll stick to St Croix or maybe the BPS Patriot ones if they ever make a full grip one. Quote
Yumeya Posted January 30, 2020 Posted January 30, 2020 Assembled in and made in are two different things. I don't know of any rod that is 100% American made with American made materials. Honesty I like Fuji guides, they are the best guide out IMO. I think the Megabass Destroyers are made in China and they are a hell of a rod and there build quality is better then any American made rod that I have found on the market. Its like the Spyderco knives that are made in Taichung, they are built nicer with better tolerances over the USA made Spyderco's. Just sayin.... But I do love my Gloomis rods. Quote

Loomis' current factory in Woodland, WA opened in 1990 and they were bought out by Shimano in 95 (I think?). Sure, the Fuji guides come from Japan and the cork actually comes from my neck of the woods (southern Portugal), but to be fair, we do have the best cork in the world. In their line up they do have the high end Conquest that has blanks made by Shimano in Japan to their specifications and shipped to WA for assembly. Quote

I talked with the owner when he was in Richmond, VA a couple of weekends ago, and he's using Hydra (don't know where these are rolled) blanks. I haven't fished it yet, but I've tried some others folks have and they've seemed pretty good. I could have misunderstood and you have a full-fledged custom from the company; mine says ALX Custom Rods on the label, but I think you can buy them off the shelf at places like Tackle Trap. I know Lamiglas used to make a lot of the rod builders' blanks, but I think ALX has changed that for their inventoried rods. 4 hours ago, Yumeya said: Megabass Destroyers are made in China and they are a hell of a rod and there build quality is better then any American made rod that I have found on the market. I've seen these, and I don't think they're built any better than a St. Croix, Kistler, or ALX. I've seen some Loomis and Cashion rods that I think could stand some more QC. They may well be just the rod you need - I know folks that don't find the Legend Elites, etc. from St. Croix sensitive for their needs and go for the NRX or similar rod, but the build quality isn't the reason. 5by3 Posted January 30, 2020 Posted January 30, 2020 Don’t quote me on this, but I think the hydra blanks on the ALX Zolo are made and assembled here in the U.S. ALX and hydra fishing are the same company. Great company, the owner (Alex) always goes out of his way to meet your needs and you can call and talk to him directly on the phone. Good warranty program too, similar to Loomis expeditor program. GReb Posted January 30, 2020 Posted January 30, 2020 John Crews recently posted a YouTube video on Cashion rods where the owner goes through the entire process of rolling the blank and assembling the rod. I don’t remember if he said where the blank material was actually produced though Quote
Super User WRB Posted January 30, 2020 Super User Posted January 30, 2020 Lamiglas refered me to ALX when they stopped making custom bass rods around 2012. Before that time Alex made custom rods from whatever blank the customer wanted. ALX was the distributor for Kagin guides and Hydra rod blanks and made some rods for local stores before offering his Zolo brand over the counter through Tackle Warehouse. I am not sure and never asked Alex where the Hydra blanks are made? St Croix rods were a discount house rod builder for KMart etc in the 60's-70's before the company offered higher end rods in the 80's. The majority of fishing rods were being made in China by the late 80's that made blanks in a factory and finished the rods in a cottage industry using very low labor costs that continues throughout Asia.
