Since we've decided that soda is bad for bass I thought I'd mention, soda is bad for people too.

Yeah. Ive used coke to  clean off battery acid. Just think what that does to your insides…

I keep bleeding fish for a while. If they live, they can be released.

If they die , they are eaten…with no regret, I do hate it when bigger bass  die, but that very rarely happens …

I don’t think I’d ever eat a carp though…?

Probably could be said about a lot of items we consume on a regular basis.  And yet, we continue to do it.  That's what they want too.

Remember my Dad many years ago dumping coke all over his windshield claiming it removes tree sap.

I can also see it removing a fishes slime coat.

This thread is the first I've seen where a product is offered to " fix a fish on the fly " , interesting.

If I know a fish isn't going to make it, usually gill damage, the best I can do is eat it.

Problem is when they are bleeding and under the legal limit, can’t eat that one. And everywhere I fish the smallmouth limit is 18” or more, I’ve had to release some dead ones

I take the fish anyway if they are dieing, just seems right to me, my taste buds are more important than a snapping turtle ?

Haven't seen DNR around here in 20 years.

A fishing mentor of mine, Dalton Bobo lost the Bassmaster Classic because of a dead fish penalty.   He would have won by 2ozs IIrc if not for the dead fish.     $100k gone, and the most prestigious crown in fishing gone.   I couldn't imagine the heart break.     He's such a humble and nice man too.

Wonder if this is the biggest tourney loss because of a dead fish penalty, I bet it might be.   With the money involved now in Bass tourneys, surely it will lead to advancements in fish health products.   Not everyone has a livewell, a topical spray would be dynamite for shore, kayak, or Jon type boat anglers.

When I worked for the MN DNR as an intern way back in 2005, I witnessed this several times too.  There is a very strict size keeper slot for walleye and even a bleeding or dying one that is outside of it cannot be harvested.  People would make the argument that "its going to die anyways so why can't I keep it" all the time, even though it was a pure exaggeration sometimes too.  A couple times they refused to toss it back and sure enough a call was placed to an officer who was waiting for them when we returned back to shore.  The individual was cited/fined and the dead fish was confiscated.

I had a tiny largemouth swallow a crankbait whole this summer. It was toast. I put it in the water and it was just flipping on the surface slowly dying. Kind of messed up. Then a gar just grabbed it and swam off . Mother Nature is a savage with no sympathy. Humans are the only ones feeling sorry for anything. We are so disconnected from nature that we feel bad for fluffy cute creatures while eating a chicken that was mass electrocuted or decapitated next to its entire extended family without blinking. We will probably be eventually outnumbered haha

Lol that might be a bit of an exaggeration.  As the dominant species on this planet, we obviously have the most responsibility for our actions...or inaction.  Comparing a small wild fish to a domesticated chicken isn't really that a good comparison.

Maybe we should bring back Velociraptors again and be the hunted.

I’m that way too. My dad grew up hard and one of his sayings was “waste makes want” I really struggle with not keeping an illegal dying fish, or keeping it. Tbh , I keep more than I throw back. Not promoting breaking the law , but …the struggle is real.

Doug was a very interesting person. I had many a long conversation with him about so many different topics.  He was a very intelligent man.  Glad I had the privilege of knowing him.

I had the privilege of meeting Doug in the early 70s when I lived in Florida. He was incredibly knowledgeable, and passionate about Bass fishing, and fish in general. He spent about 2 hours of his time talking to me and sharing his knowledge and I was just a dumb "kid" that happened to run into him at a Steak n' Shake. Nice guy,
