HydrillaKilla Posted July 5, 2007 Posted July 5, 2007 Im just curious if anybody still uses these awesome baits? I cant believe they dont make them anymore! I try and find them at garage sales, old bargan centers etc. I have found some on e-bay a few times also. The only reason i can think of as to why they stopped making them is they never wore out or really faded in color no matter how many fish you caught. That being said you really only had to buy them one time in a few colors and you never seemed to need anymore. I bought some years ago before my first trip to Lake Fork in early march. We hired a guide the first day we were there to learn a little about the lake. It was sooo cold the guides on our rods were freezing and we fished mostly coves "as did every guide on the lake" to get out of the wind. We had thrown everything the guide told us to but nothing worked. I finally had guts enough to pull out my new can of pork-o's and after several "funky" looks from our guide and my fishin buddy i began casting. In a 15 minute time span i landed a 7lb plus, 6lb and 2 over 5lbs. Needless to say there were no more "funky" looks and i had the guide diggin him one out of my tackle box! ;D Every guide in that cove came over to see what the heck we were using that day. My guide drove all the way to Sulpher Springs that night to try and find some pork-o's for his next days customers. I hope i didn't bore you guys to death with my story but it was and still is an amazing bait. If you can get your hands on some give it a try. I hope you all had a great 4th of july thanks Quote
Lightninrod Posted July 6, 2007 Posted July 6, 2007 I still have a jar of Pork-Os and you are right in praising them. When they went out of production, I discovered these pork baits. They aren't as long and are wider than the originals but they work. Dan Quote
MichaelD1 Posted July 6, 2007 Posted July 6, 2007 Thanks for the link Dan. I just ordered 1 jar of each color. Used Pork-Os about 15 years ago glad to see something similar. Mike Quote
HydrillaKilla Posted July 6, 2007 Author Posted July 6, 2007 thanks dan! i will have to get a few of them. i guess very few people fished with pork-o's since there has only been 2 replies?? it might have been before a lot of peoples time on here i dont know? most of the people i know that fished them said they never caught anything on them but what i learned about them is you dont catch many small fish and you have to be patient. i would guess my average fish on them is around 3-4 lbs. thanks again dan... robbie Quote
Super User .ghoti. Posted July 7, 2007 Super User Posted July 7, 2007 Thanks, Dan, for the link to the new version. I used to love the Pork-O. Was really disappointed when they went out of production. These were a fine big fish bait. Not many bites, but you know you had a good fish when one hit. Hydrilla, you've probably hit on why they went out of production. I used to buy two jars at a time. They'd last forever, unless the jars leaked and the baits dried out over the winter. And, not many people around here had the patience to use them. I remember buying jars for a buck apiece, on clearance, several times. Just wasn't a big seller. I'll be ordering some of those new ones ASAP. Cheers, GK Quote
captbob Posted July 7, 2007 Posted July 7, 2007 Ghoti: I used to dry my pork on purpose so I could soak them in Menhadden Milk--(NOT OIL) made them twice as good, have seen fish start to follow and when they got a whiff---CHARGE!!!!. Quote
HydrillaKilla Posted July 7, 2007 Author Posted July 7, 2007 what is menhadden milk? i have never heard of it. Ghoti you are soooo right about the bottles leaking. that was the only thing i didnt like about the bait. i started keeping them in plastic containers after all that salt leaked out on some good hooks and ruiened them. robbie Quote
Lightninrod Posted July 8, 2007 Posted July 8, 2007 Y'all are most welcome. I nearly went crazy searching for a Pork-O replacement and those Slinkies fit the bill. For some reason, their purple color has been my best producer. Dan Quote

D@#N im gettin old! i remember when someone was 38 they were like old as dirt. now thats me ;D robbie Quote
MichaelD1 Posted July 12, 2007 Posted July 12, 2007 Received my order of Slinkies yesterday. Looking forward to testing them out soon. It has been so long since fishing the old Pork-o baits I was wondering how you guys fished these baits ? Do you run the hook point through the skin side or the fat side? Also I never used any weight other than the bait itself how about you? Give me some tips. Thanks Mike Quote
Stringjam Posted July 12, 2007 Posted July 12, 2007 I remember (several years ago) when Bill Dance aired an episode of "The Thing" (a skirted hook in front of a Pork-O). After seeing "The Thing" underwater I just had to have some of those Pork-O's.....caught some nice bass and lost one to a big muskie. Hmmm....I'd completely forgotten about those things - - wonder if that old jar is still laying around.... : Quote

There should be a hole punched through the fat end, about 1/2" from its edge. Dan Quote
