Favorite Drop Shot Bait

What is your favorite drop shot setup?

 

I usually reach for a Zoom trick worm with a 1/4oz tungsten weight on an 3/0 offset ewg hook dragging it through grass. 

 

What is your favorite bait? Looking to branch out from the trick worm for more open water situations

6 or 4" Roboworm, in various colors. Usually MM, MM II, or hologram shad. Using the lightest weight possible.

Under normal circumstances - a #1 or 1/0 hook with a 7" Berkley Power Worm in light, medium or dark color depending on water stain.

If they're being finicky, I downsize to a #2 hook and use a 3" Keitech Leech - again, color depending on water clarity.

Mine go to is a 4” roboworm in the Aaron’s magic color on a #1 VMC sureset drop shot hook with a 1/8oz cylinder weight. A close second is the dream shot OPT in the magic color with the same hook and weight.

Dream shot, bomb shot, and hazedong shad have all produced very well for me, but there's probably another 4-5 I mix into the rotation that produce nearly as well (nose hooked mosquito light sz 2, mostly in/around rock).

Small minnow type baits such as the Zoom super fluke jr. , Berkley powerbait minnow and the Strike King / Zman 3x elaztec minnows can also work well .

Spring: 3" - 4" any shape (minnow, worm, leech, craw, lizard), nose hooked. Rest of year: 3" - 7" any shape, 1/0 - 3/0 ewg.

I have caught a total of two bass on a drop shot and they came off a  Kalins Western  Weenie Worm . ?

When I use a drop shot it’s usually baited with a Zoom finesse worm. If the bass are not wanting that , I will use a BPS 3” stik-o.

Prior to this past season I always used a ACB Gspot shad. Now after using others the Reins 4 inch bubbling shaker was great and I had good success with the Strike King Baby Z-too. I usually run 10 pound Sufix 832 to a 8 pound Sufix Floro leader. I always run a Gamakatsu 1/0 circle hook because it has been the most consistent with not dropping fish.

I use two different hooks. If im throwing a longer worm like the Zoom Trick Worm, I use a light wire 1/0 either GAmkatsu EWG or a VMC EWG with three barbs, really like that design.

 

 

 

if im throwing smaller finesse baits im using a 4-1/0 Hamamatsu splitshot/frop shot hook.Usually a size 1.

 

Favorite baits are Zoom finesse worm in pumpkin or gooseberry. Strike king dream shot in goose berry or pink or chartreuse. zoom shaker worm is good, leeches, especially the z man ones. I like some tiny Yamamoto worms as well.

 

I have 3 types of weights, ball skinny and teardrop. skinny in weeds ball in rocks and teardrop all around favorite. I use 1/16 through 3/8 prefer tungsten but if im breaking off I use lead. 6 lb floro, saguaro invest leader and 8 lb braid on a 6'10" ml

Either a small #1 or a 1/0 Roboworm Rebarb hook is really hard to beat. Use a weight that will pin its position well. 

 

Roboworms have already been mentioned repeatedly and they are one of my favorites. 

 

Another plastic that really works really well? A Jackall Crosstail Shad in either the 3" or 4". They are super salty, sort of amorphous in shape and and bass love them.

My drop shot rigs are simply.

 

My go to is a nose hooked Roboworm 4" Alive Shad. KVD Dream Shots are pretty much interchangeable. #2 is a wacky rigged Daiwa Yamamoto Neko worm or similar

Have used the Keitech swing impact 2” on a light sinker (1/8 oz) in shallow water (not really open water) with great success - the proverbial “catching them consistently when nothing else would work.”  Even at night which amazed me.
