I know that there a lot of different opinions on there about how much people need to worry about the rod line rating (especially on fresh water applications) so that’s not really my question here. I’m just wondering if someone can help me understand the science behind why rods have a line rating. Is this a result of lure rating, rod power, and so on? Thanks in advance!

Modern reels and sophisticated drag systems make line ratings irrelevant.

Line rating and all other rod “specs” are 100% subjective and strictly the opinion of the manufacturer. Of these subjective labels line rating is the least useful for bass applications. Ignore it.
