5/0 Posted January 23, 2020 Posted January 23, 2020 I have an older Shimano Sedona FB that I was spoiling today and the line built up towards the front of the spool. Luckily it was a cheap line that I was going to use as backing for braid, so no loss there. But I still would like to get the backing down evenly. Is there a way to prevent this? I had the line coming off the spool the same way it was going on the reel and I used my fingers to put pressure as I reeled it on. I had my drag tightened down also. Thanks....Joe Quote
Super User JustJames Posted January 23, 2020 Super User Posted January 23, 2020 Add washer shim, it should come with your reel. If not you might have to order it from shimano. Shimano website only have version down to FD, you might have to call and confirm. Quote
Super User Hammer 4 Posted January 23, 2020 Super User Posted January 23, 2020 Yup, you need to add 1 or more washers/shims to get it to lay even. Easy fix. Also, any tackle shops that do reel repairs may have some you could buy. Quote
Tim Kelly Posted January 23, 2020 Posted January 23, 2020 If it's an old reel and it has spooled line OK before, it's not the washer stack that needs adjusting. Might be you were holding the line too close to the reel and it didn't go over the roller freely, the roller might be seized and sticking, causing line lay issues, the bail could be bent, or a couple of other reasons. The most common one is inattention when spooling. I've done it a couple of times. You don't notice that the line isn't sitting right in the bail when you're spooling, often caused by trapping the line against the blank too close to the reel when you're adding tension to the line spooling up. I put a pencil through the spool, trap the spool between my knees with the pencil in the fold of the back of my knees, line through the butt guide and wind it on to the reel The line is coming off the top of the line spool. This seems to work well and you can increase or decrease the tension by squeezing your knees against the line spool lip. Take the line off and try spooling it again. 1 Quote
5/0 Posted January 23, 2020 Author Posted January 23, 2020 After posting I did search and saw a couple articles on using washers to correct problem. Unfortunately the reel is old enough that replacement parts are a problem. I did see that washers may be available on a site called Ereplacement.com. Have any of you had experience with this site? In the meantime I’ll respool using the advice provided in the thread. The backing is cheap enough so it’s loss is not a problem. One other question if I may? There were no replacement washers in the Sedona box, but I do have 3-4 from a old Stradic. They are thinner and larger in diameter and not rubber like the Sedona. Would these work? Thanks for your replies. Quote
Super User JustJames Posted January 23, 2020 Super User Posted January 23, 2020 It should work as long as it is not too big or too loose. I would put the one from stradic down first then it’s own washer to make sure tight fit. At one time I needed ci4 washer, I had to use shield from Boca bearing instead. It worked until I got the part needed. Quote
