hoosierbass07 Posted January 25, 2020 Posted January 25, 2020 I saw a job listing once for a supervisor position at a Dicks warehouse near Indianapolis. Number one job of the supervisor was to keep unions from forming. Say what you want about about unions (support or don't), after I saw that I realized that store is nothing but a front for Chinese junk made in sweat shops. Granted, most stores might be like that. But to say the main requirement of the job is to keep unions from forming, ugh. Quote
JHB Posted January 26, 2020 Posted January 26, 2020 I remember when they bought out Galyon's. They closed that store and moved to a new one at the mall. The first impression I had after wading through all the spandex and running shoes to get to the fishing and firearms section was the prices were high, no help, and the selection left a lot to be desired. Fast forward 18 years they are closing. I went back maybe 5 times and my impression didn't change. We have 2 good independent gun and fishing stores that put Dick's to shame. Knowledgeable help great selection and as far as prices they are so close to TW it isn't funny shipping cost are more than the cost of gas. Then the CEO runes his mouth and alienates a good part of his customer base. They are getting what they asked for. 1 Quote

This. They are expanding Field and Stream into more locations. Makes sense to take the Outdoors out of Dicks to drive more traffic to their F&S stores. I went to F&S for the first time in November as it is 3 hours from my house and I enjoyed their store and prices more than the bass pro that's 10 min from my house. I really hope that my area is one that gets a F&S with their expansion. Quote
GTN-NY Posted January 27, 2020 Posted January 27, 2020 We lost our field & stream store when sportsman warehouse bought them out. So far it hasn’t changed much as they sell off the old inventory. They say it will get better soon Quote

I like that I can get some of the newer brands that most stores don't carry. And they price matched Tackle Warehouse sale and I got a 13 Fate Black rod for $60 after TW sold out. 1 Quote

But with regards to "Made in China" in B&M retail stores, unfortunately they can no longer compete and survive without Chinese made products. Only change you can expect within the next couple years is to see more made in Vietnam, Cambodia and the Phillipines slowly replace China made products. (fishing gear and tackle). 2 Quote
MrPeanut Posted January 27, 2020 Posted January 27, 2020 It's fairly difficult for stores to keep a large selection of fishing lures in stock in multiple colors/sizes and still be profitable, so I'm not shocked Dick's is failing to keep up a fishing dept in some areas. Unless location wise they're by some good fisheries, they just won't have the product turnover needed. It sucks for us as the consumer, but I'd imagine it's pretty difficult for a store manager to explain why the space is needed for all the packages of just the worm section - if you think about how much shelf space it takes up just to have a couple sizes in a small handful of colors - compared to other items/sports that may sell year around. Particularly up here where the water is hard for several months. Compared to fly shops, where their inventory is a lot smaller and can keep hundreds of flies in what is practically a dresser drawer. volzfan59 Posted January 27, 2020 Posted January 27, 2020 Now that I live in southern Arkansas, my closest DSG is in Monroe, LA. The fishing Dept. was terrible. No big deal, there's an Academy in Monroe and a well stocked mom and pop nearby. Quote

plawren53202 Posted January 28, 2020 Posted January 28, 2020 I have never been a fan of DSG for fishing gear, even though there are two close to me. An occasional diversion when I needed a long lunch break at work were about the most they ever offered. Prices just not in line with what I can find online or at Academy, BP, Cabelas. Having said that, now that the news came out about them removing fishing gear from their stores, and I see lots of people in other parts of the country getting 50% off or other good deals, I have been to both of my local DSGs in the last week to hunt for closeout sales. One had absolutely no fishing gear on sale, zero, and the other had a small table where a few things were marked down maybe 10%. Both stores still had shelves basically full of their fishing gear. Good ole DSG. Disappointing me even to the end. 1 Quote
GrumpyOlPhartte Posted January 28, 2020 Posted January 28, 2020 Lots of interesting comments here regarding DSG. Where I am located (far western MA) it’s either DSG or Walmart for fishing “stuff”. Local store employees inform me that although they are no longer permitted to carry firearms, they are actually planning on expanding the fishing section. It’s too early to know what that entails, I actually saw a small selection of Dobyns and St. Croix rods on the rack. Neither of the Fury swimbait rods but some Mojo and, for the Dobyns, the 703, 705, and a few others. Will have to see ... The biggest thrill for me were the top three lures shown in the pic here. Never thought I’d see the day!! Granted, they are actually provided through Catchco, but at least they are decent-looking swimbaits for $15.00 a pop. (The others were ordered from Tackle Warehouse.) I’m wondering what they’ll have when spring gets here. Needless to say, they all bounce and slide across the ice really well. I got some great distance for my casts! Anyway, I’m not ready to give up on DSG just yet. But then again, when ya live two blocks from the ends of the earth, ya take what you can get. 3 Quote

When I use to attend the Sportsman's Show at the Eastern States Exposition grounds, we use to go to Dick's right after. They'd always have loads of gear on sale. No longer I guess. That's the truth. I used to have dozens of excellent mom and pop stores in my area and they've slowly closed their doors since online shopping became prominent. The few that are still around now have largely empty shelves and seem to make most of their money off of live bait. Quote
Jason.Domingo Posted January 28, 2020 Posted January 28, 2020 Our Dick’s fishing section isnt going anywhere here in Daly City. They’re actually expanding it due to the hunting section closing according to the workers in the fishing section. I got no issues with Dick’s, if the price is too high I find it online somewhere cheaper and just have them price match it. No issues here. 1 Quote
Caliyak Posted January 28, 2020 Posted January 28, 2020 Here in Central California, DSG is still selling fishing gear. 1 Quote

If DSG stops selling fishing gear I'll be stuck with Bass Pro Shops and Cabelas, both of which don't have great selections and are 45 minutes, or more, away from me. One local DSG was closing out their .40 S&W bulk ammo last week when I was there. Hopefully that's not a sign of things to come. There aren't any good mom & pop fishing stores near me. I have a family member who works at our local DSG here in MA so will try to get the skinny on what's going to happen here. If they are doing away with their fishing dept in store maybe I'll think about getting back into the tackle.biz...the last Mom/Pop shop that I managed closed its doors when Wally World rolled into town....ugh. I don't shop at that Blue Place either...and that's all I'll say about that ...but as for the issue about M&P tackle shops surviving in MA, they are all over the place. Of course I imagine the ones doing the best are those strategically located either on the coast line for salt, or near a major body of water such as Wachusett Reservoir. Here is a link for you to check out...maybe you can find a local one you like. https://www.fishingnortheast.net/choose-your-state/massachusetts/massachusetts-bait-and-tackle-shops/ No guarantee all the ones listed are still in business. 2 Quote
Luke Barnes Posted January 30, 2020 Posted January 30, 2020 I went to my local DSG last night to see if they were blowing out the fishing stuff to replace the space and they already took all the fishing stuff out!!! I have ZERO reason to go in there now, nor will I go in for anything. Quote
schplurg Posted February 1, 2020 Posted February 1, 2020 I went in mine and they still have fishing gear - maybe less, but high prices. Maybe price matching could be a good idea. At least there aren't any lines to check out. How do they stay in business? Supplying local soccer teams with gear? I don't see kids playing outside anymore so what gives? No soccer moms... Sporting goods stores can't stay in business and at the same time one of the biggest killers of humans is a sedentary lifestyle. Makes sense. One reason I fish is to get off my butt. Bank fishing is good exercise for me. I fall on rocks, get slapped in the face by branches...can't beat it! I feel sorry for the youth of today. We had beer, chicks, fishing, played football in the street, soccer, baseball, skateboards, bikes. Kids today have a phone loaded with games that let them pretend they're playing football, soccer, skateboarding and riding bikes while they get fat and stupid. Rant over. Now get off my lawn! 1 1 Quote

I buy my Carhartt stuff there when they are running a sale. Quote

I vowed to not raise my kids like that. They love to fish and know the names of the fish. But I do agree, I dont see many kids out in my neighborhood and I am a worried parent when it comes to going in the street. Although my kids are still very young. But I loved playing sports in the street and knew to respect cars. I aim to teach my kids that. Also DSG by me is always a ghost town. I hope it closes and they put something useful in instead. Quote
Crankin4Bass Posted February 2, 2020 Posted February 2, 2020 I went to my local DSG in Salem, NH to look for fishing closeouts but found out they are expanding the fishing dept and adding more kayaks to replace the gun dept. Quote
