kjfishman Posted January 22, 2020 Posted January 22, 2020 Dick's Sporting Goods what are they thinking? First AR's now they quit selling fishing gear in retail stores! Ask an employee if that was just the Wentzville MO store and he said was the whole region. He went on to say well you can order online. I have no reason to go to any of their stores again. 2 Quote
MAN Posted January 22, 2020 Posted January 22, 2020 Yeah our locations here in Texas pretty much clearanced out a majority of the fishing department. Looks like they plan on keeping just a handful of fishing essentials. Of course here in Texas they are not making it....on a good day you may see 5-6 non- employee cars in the parking lot at the locations near me. Academy keeps them at bay. Quote
Super User DogBone_384 Posted January 22, 2020 Super User Posted January 22, 2020 I hope that doesn't happen here in MA. If DSG stops selling fishing gear I'll be stuck with Bass Pro Shops and Cabelas, both of which don't have great selections and are 45 minutes, or more, away from me. One local DSG was closing out their .40 S&W bulk ammo last week when I was there. Hopefully that's not a sign of things to come. There aren't any good mom & pop fishing stores near me. Quote
LonnieP Posted January 22, 2020 Posted January 22, 2020 Doesn't bother me. Ours doesn't have much selection and I'd rather support my local shop. 5 Quote
Super User Paul Roberts Posted January 22, 2020 Super User Posted January 22, 2020 Drying up here too. I assume that all the on-line business has taken them out. I would stop by to grab something quick, but it's much more efficient to research and order something online. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted January 22, 2020 Super User Posted January 22, 2020 They haven't been relevant in years, in this area. 5 Quote
Super User Sam Posted January 22, 2020 Super User Posted January 22, 2020 We had a large Dick's store pull out of the Stony Point Fashion Park as one of their anchor stores three years ago, leaving five other locations open in the greater Richmond, Virginia geographical area. Since all I do is swim for exercise I don't buy anything from any of the Dick's outlets other than for goggles and ear plugs and stopping by to see what they have on sale at the store off Kroger Center Boulevard behind Chesterfield Towne Center. With all of the Internet options to the fishing industry we can order on-line easier than driving to a retail outlet and have better selections. As for my plastics, I go to the Zoom distributor to purchase my plastics, other than for Missile Baits and YUM Dingers. And to make matters worse for Dick's, the guys and gals working the fishing department do not know bass fishing so you are on your own, if you can find anyone in the fishing department in the first place. 1 Quote
nascar2428 Posted January 22, 2020 Posted January 22, 2020 They still have their Field and Stream stores, so it makes sense to take fishing and hunting out of the DSG stores. Quote
HookInMouth Posted January 22, 2020 Posted January 22, 2020 Ugh. I can't stand DSG but they were my only option for a lot of stuff. Really wish Academy would open something closer to Pittsburgh. Quote

Anyone remember Galyon's? That's what the DSG used to be, years ago. Quote
Hewhospeaksmuchbull Posted January 22, 2020 Posted January 22, 2020 I thought Dick's was a clothing store, that dabbled in sporting goods. Quote
MAN Posted January 22, 2020 Posted January 22, 2020 When Dicks chose to take such a stark side with regards to firearms, they lost their outdoors customers..both hunting and fishing since both are heavily intertwined. When I mention our Dicks stores are not doing well in Texas I am referring to both Dicks and Field & Stream. 3 Quote
NittyGrittyBoy Posted January 22, 2020 Posted January 22, 2020 I'm one of those supporters that refuse to step foot in another DSG. When they destroyed those AR's as political move that was the straw. Hope they bankrupt. Good riddance 7 Quote
Hook2Jaw Posted January 22, 2020 Posted January 22, 2020 DSG is the K-Mart of sporting goods suppliers. 3 2 Quote

JediAmoeba Posted January 22, 2020 Posted January 22, 2020 If it wasnt for my local fishing store that only plans on being open 3 days a week this year, the closest thing to me besides DSG in regards to fishing gear, within 90 minutes, is Wal-Mart Quote
skekoam Posted January 22, 2020 Posted January 22, 2020 Figures. I was at DSG store last night and you literally have to walk around for 10 minutes to find someone to help you there. I only saw 2 guys working the register and 1 in the shoe dept. This is at a huge store too. Quote
Steveo-1969 Posted January 22, 2020 Posted January 22, 2020 I buy 90% of my fishing needs online. But within 20 minutes of me for "quick need-it-right-now" purchases I have 2 DSG stores and 2 Walmarts. The DSG stores are not great but are hands down better than the Walmarts. I will be a little sad if the DSG fishing departments start looking like my Walmarts. 1 Quote

kdubracing Posted January 22, 2020 Posted January 22, 2020 I stopped by Dick's to kill some time waiting for a movie this past weekend. Same thing in Peoria, IL. All the fishing stuff was gone. The Gander Outdoors here already closed. There is a Bass Pro, and they are good. The Walmarts near me all have a pretty decent amount of fishing gear, but the color selection on lures/plastics is limited. I have no problem shopping online, but I hate paying shipping and don't always want to spend $50-100 to get free shipping. Amazon Prime gets a lot of my shopping if I'm not making a trip to Bass Pro. Quote
Tizi Posted January 22, 2020 Posted January 22, 2020 If shopping at TW, you can use the $5 off code and shipping is only $1.75. Pretty good deal. The problem with TW is they charge sales tax now. There are other online retailers not charging tax...yet. Quote
Super User the reel ess Posted January 22, 2020 Super User Posted January 22, 2020 Ours sucks. There's an Academy close by that kills them. If that's not bad enough, there's a Cabela's (BPS, Jr) a couple exits up the interstate. But the wife and daughter like to go into Ulta, which is next door to Dick's. So I will usually saunter in there to see what's on the clearance rack. There's always some stuff on clearance because they have no idea how to purchase for bass fishing. They stock up on the latest gimmicky stuff like bat and duck-looking lures and then they're on deep discount end of summer. Quote
GReb Posted January 22, 2020 Posted January 22, 2020 Not to mention shortly after removing the ARs they removed a product due to it having a Bible verse on the packaging. They went PC and lost. 4 Quote
