pauldconyers Posted January 21, 2020 Posted January 21, 2020 I've read recently about some guys using 2 split rings per treble hook on some moving baits. What is the thought process behind this? What types of baits should you consider doing this? Or just a bunch of garbage? Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted January 21, 2020 Global Moderator Posted January 21, 2020 Guys do it with heavy baits to make it harder for fish to get as much leverage to throw the bait (swimbaits especially). I don't personally do it, but I see it pretty often with swimbaiters. Even using heavy braided line in place of split rings. 1 Quote

Instead of using two would it make just as much sense to use one larger split ring? Or is the benefit actually having two and having more "freedom of movement" with it? Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted January 21, 2020 Global Moderator Posted January 21, 2020 It's the freedom of movement with 2 rings that is the main benefit. I wouldn't worry about a bait like a 5xd or 6xd. I think the additional fish landed would be marginal, but the added snags would probably be pretty noticeable. Quote

Once again thanks for the info and advice Blue! 1 Quote
Super User WRB Posted January 21, 2020 Super User Posted January 21, 2020 3oz+ treble hook swimbaits the double split rings act line a link chain allowing the hook to rotate without tearing out. The treble hooks on most crankbaits are too close together to use double split rings without the hooks tangling togther. Tom Quote

Thanks Tom Quote
mcipinkie Posted January 22, 2020 Posted January 22, 2020 I always use double split rings on a Spook. Cuts down on the fishes leverage and I believe picks up short striker ever now and then. Need short shank hooks to make work. VMC 9651 or KVD. Quote
Super User Sam Posted January 22, 2020 Super User Posted January 22, 2020 I tried double split rings on some Rat-L-Traps just for the fun of it and never got a bite. Never have tried it again. Quote
papajoe222 Posted January 22, 2020 Posted January 22, 2020 As I also muskie fish, I was thinking something different when I read the title. When I first started using two split rings, it was to keep the original one ring version from pulling open. I'd run identical rings doubled up. I still do this on some of those baits, but haven't done either version on a bass bait. I do like the idea of one below the other and may give it a try on some big, two hook surface baits. Quote
